Wriggly Nativity, Jack Frost and Elfie on the Shelf in P2A

Well done to all the children for their fantastic performance of Wriggly Nativity, it was great to see them enjoying themselves up on the stage. They sang their hearts out!

In Maths this week we rounded off our work on addition and subtraction and completed a check-up with Miss Prince. We are all on track and have worked so hard this term. Next week we will be covering pattern.

In Literacy we wrote letters to Santa, we did this independently as Miss Prince wanted to see how we are getting on. It is lovely to see the progress since our first piece of writing back in August. We are mostly remembering capital letters, full stops and finger spaces and some of us are experimenting with question marks and exclamation marks. We could all do with some extra revision of our common words (sight words), here’s a game you could play to practise:

http://www.ictgames.com/littleBirdSpelling/

After listening to the story ‘Here Comes Jack Frost’ we used our imaginations and discussed who we think Jack Frost is and what he/she might look like. We created our ideas using collage and wrote a sentence to describe our ideas.

Our naughty classroom elf, Elfie, has been causing all sorts of bother over the past couple of weeks. One day he even pinched all of our emotional check-in faces and put them up high so we couldn’t reach them! I wonder what mischief he will get up to next week…

Here are some photos from last week – Katie Morag painting, Christmas card making and our Christmas Fayre Stall:

Diary writing and glitter in P2A

In Maths this week some of us challenged ourselves to solve addition and subtraction within 100. We found that we can use the strategies we learnt with numbers to 20 to help us solve bigger sums.  Here’s a game to try at home:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/starship/maths/games/cross_the_swamp/big_sound/full.shtml

In Literacy we learned how to write a diary entry. We know that we put the date at the top, start with ‘Dear Diary’ and use the word ‘I’ in our sentences.

We imagined that we were Katie Morag when she got angry and threw her Ted into the sea. We did a plan to help us to write our diary entry, thinking about the questions…

What happened? How did you feel?

We made sure we put our sentences in the correct order, using First, Next and After That. We also used a joining word to link what happened with how it made us feel. We are doing so well with our writing!

In Phonics next week we will be doing a check up to see how we are getting on with consonant blends and our common words. I will share the results of this so you know which sounds or words need revision.

Finally, you know Christmas is here when you get the glitter out! Our Christmas crafts are nearly finished and we can’t wait to show you!

We’ve enjoyed building during free play:

Have a great weekend!

Subtraction Success and Sheep in P2A

Another busy week in P2A, our Nativity practices are now in full swing. This week we began staging, we are getting good at remembering when it is our turn to go on the stage. Next week we will be sorting out our costumes and having a go with the microphones.

In Maths we continued our work on subtraction, moving on to subtracting teen numbers.

For example; 16 – 12

We know that we can take away the 10 first: 16 – 10  = 6

Then take away 2 more: 6 – 2 = 4

Here’s a game to practise subtraction sums:

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/subtraction-grids

We understand that we all learn in different ways so we tried out lots of strategies and decided which worked best for us. Some of our strategies:

  • Hopping on a number line
  • Using cubes
  • Counting on from the smallest number

We are all working so hard in Maths and getting quicker at solving sums. EM and RW independently completed all their subtraction sums, we are very proud of them!

In Phonics, we worked on some more consonant blends and wrote sentences using our spelling words. We are getting good at spelling words that begin with a consonant blend; next week is our last week on this.

In Drama with Mrs Hogg we invented a machine that a character in our story could use.

Our P7 helpers helped us make fluffy sheep to decorate the hall for Christmas.

On Wednesday Miss Prince took some of the P6/7 choir representatives to sing at an awards ceremony. We went to see other teachers in the lower school and joined in with Art and PE. We all had a lovely time and all the teachers commented on our enthusiasm and good behaviour.

We LOVED PJ day!

Have a fab weekend,

Nativity Practice, letter writing and warm fuzzies in P2A

This week we found out our parts in the Nativity and started rehearsing the songs in the hall. We are setting an excellent example, showing the Primary 1s how we sit, sing and join in with the actions. Song words will go home in homework jotters on Monday, although they have learnt most of the words already!

In Maths we started learning about subtraction within numbers to 20.  We found out that we can use our knowledge of subtraction within 10 to help us. For example:

7-5 = 2

17-5 = 12

We used a number line to help us with subtraction sums. We must remember to count the hops (sometimes we were forgetting and counting the number we started on).

Here’s a fun game to practise this strategy at home:

http://www.ictgames.com/mummyNumberLine/mummyNumberLine.html

In Literacy, we have been learning how to write a letter. We know where to put the address and what information to include in a letter. We all did a fantastic job of writing letters to Katie Morag; we even had a go at writing a question for Katie.

As this week is anti-bullying week, we would like to tell you a bit about what we do in P2A to promote kindness. You may have heard the children talking about warm fuzzies. A warm fuzzy is a kind word or action. For example;

  • Helping someone if they are stuck
  • Inviting someone to play if they are on their own
  • Giving someone a compliment

When we give or receive a warm fuzzy, we can put a warm fuzzy pompom in the jar. When the jar is full we can have a warm fuzzy party. The jar is starting to fill up because we are very good at giving warm fuzzies in P2A.

Blending and doubling in P2A

In Phonics this week we have been learning about consonant blends – br cr dr fr pr. On Wednesday we showed some of our adults what we do in Phonics. We love writing our spellings in different ways, this week we used chalks and wrote rainbow words.

In Maths we continued our work on addition to 20, this week we used our knowledge of doubling numbers to help us. For example:

6 + 5 =

Double 6 is 12

Take one away = 11

Here’s a good game to practise this strategy at home:

http://www.ictgames.com/dinosaurDentist/

In PE we played a tricky game called opposites, whatever Miss Prince told us to do we had to do the opposite – we had to concentrate really hard! We also practised our ball skills; we learnt the bounce pass and the chest pass and practised these with a partner.

In Writing we sequenced a story about Bonfire Night. We wrote sentences and ordered them correctly, checking that our writing made sense.

During Milk and story we listened to Katie Morag stories and learned about the Isle of Struay. We made a mind map to record the things we’ve learnt about Katie Morag so far. Next week we will be writing to Katie Morag and telling her all about where we live.

We had interesting show and tells from the girls on Thursday, everything from first wobbly teeth to homemade dresses!

We also began practising our Nativity songs with P2B, next week we will find out our parts – we are very excited!

Have a lovely weekend,

A spooktastic week in P2A

This week the children have been very excited about all things Halloween! They had a great afternoon at the Halloween disco, thank you to the PTA for organising.

In Phonics we have been learning words that end in ng and nk. All of the children did very well in dictation and they were all able to independently write a sentence using words with these sounds in. Here is a good game to practise reading ng and nk words at home:

http://www.ictgames.com/dinosaurEggs_phonics/index.html

In Maths this week we have been working on addition to 20. We can now add a single digit number to a teen number. We made a bus to help us to visualise what these sums would look like.

We know we can somersault addition sums. Starting with the bigger number helps us to solve sums quicker on a number line or in our head.  For example,

3+14 =

14+3 =

In Art we made our own Halloween monsters using chalks on black paper. It was a challenge not to smudge the chalk, especially for the left handed (Miss Prince struggled with this too!) They have turned out brilliantly, what a creative class we are.

We have finished making our hoglets, they are living in a tuff tray in our classroom. If you go out walking this weekend and find any good leaves for them to hibernate under then please send them in.

The children were very excited to find a real life hedgehog on the pitch on Thursday; they were very sensible and gave the hedgehog lots of room to scuttle away.

Next week…

We have a new boy starting in our class on Monday, he came to visit on Wednesday and we were all very kind and welcoming.

Next Wednesday is our Phonics/Spelling opening morning, hope to see you then.

Joining words, 3D shapes and Hoglets in P2A

Welcome back, I hope you all had a lovely October break.

We’ve packed lots into our short week!

In Writing we wrote about our holiday, we all had lots to write about!  We all successfully used a joining word in a sentence and some of us challenged ourselves to write 4 sentences.

In Spelling we worked on our common words. We made up actions to help us remember each one. We are getting better at speed reading our common words (remembering we don’t need to sound them out).

In Mental Maths we worked on adding 3 single digits, using our knowledge of number bonds to help us.

For example; 6 + 4 + 2

                                  10 + 2 = 12

Here are some sums to try at home:

8 + 2 + 6 =

9 + 1 + 3 =

5 + 5 + 4 =

We also learnt about 3D shapes. We can talk about the properties of 3D shapes using the language – corners, faces and edges. We loved making cuboid and cube aliens!

Our Outdoor Learning focus this week was hibernation and hedgehogs. Hedgehogs will begin hibernating very soon, we know not to disturb piles of leaves in case there is a hedgehog sleeping in there. In Art we used clay and twigs to make hoglets (baby hedgehogs). We rolled and smoothed the clay to make the body of the hoglet and we used twigs we collected to make the spikes. When the clay dried we painted them. We will show you our finished hoglets next week.

Next week we will begin our Literacy book focus – Katie Morag. If you have any of these stories at home and don’t mind us borrowing them that would be great!

Thanks for reading our blog 🙂

Postcards and Painting in P2A

Thank you for sending in your postcards, it helped us to identify the different features. On Tuesday we wrote our own postcards from the seaside – we put the stamp, address and name in the correct place and wrote some sentences about our holidays. Miss Baillie visited us during our writing lesson; she was very impressed with our enthusiasm for writing. We have enjoyed posting our free writing in the post box and role playing as the postman/woman!

In Maths we have been counting forwards and backwards in 10s from any number to 100. For example, 38, 48, 58, 68, 78… We found this tricky so we used this number square to help us:

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/paint-the-squares

In Art we looked at seaside art by the artist Paul Bursnall. We liked how he used thick lines and bright colours – the houses reminded us of Balamory. On Thursday afternoon we had a go at painting our own seaside scenes in the same style.

Next week is our final week before the October break, we’ve worked so hard this term; we definitely deserve our holiday! Next week we will be learning about different types of energy in Science and 2D shape in Maths.

Looking forward to seeing you all at Parents’ Evening (Wednesday/Thursday).

Have a great weekend!

Symmetry and the Seaside in P2A

In Maths this week we have been learning about symmetry. On Monday we enjoyed playing symmetry games on the laptops with our P6 pals. On Tuesday we worked with a partner to devise a symmetrical dance to music. Miss Prince was very impressed with our creativity and understanding of how to create a mirror image. We also had a go at completing some symmetrical drawings and making patterns with items from the tinker tray.

Our new topic is the Seaside. We looked at and labelled the different features of the seaside and sorted them into natural and made by humans. We are in the process of painting a seaside scene; we will be adding our artwork to this over the next couple of weeks.

To go with our Seaside theme; we now have a rock pool in our classroom 🙂 the children have loved playing in this. If you have anything at home we  could add to the rock pool that would be super.

In reading we are working on reading with fluency, remembering that we don’t need to sound out our sight words as we just know these. Our word of the week was ‘this’. We can all sight read ‘this’ word now 🙂

Miss Prince’s Phonics group have been learning words with the ee/ea sound in. These are trickier than they sound because we have to remember which spelling to use for each word.

We celebrated International Languages Day by learning to say hello in lots of different languages. We had lots of fun learning the actions with a partner!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t68cblg0Dso

On Monday we will be starting to learn about postcards – if you have any at home that we could borrow to look at that would be a great help.

Have a lovely weekend when it gets here!

Counting in tens and ones, the Daily Mile and Hedgehog Road Safety in P2A

This week we have made lots of progress  – today we all remembered to gather all our belongings and check our trays at the end of the day, Miss Prince was delighted!

Thank you for coming along to Meet the Teacher evening, it was lovely to see so many of you there.

In Maths this week we have been counting in tens and ones. We found this really tricky at first (we were great at counting the tens but kept forgetting to add the ones!) Here is a fun game we played in class that you could play at home:

http://www.ictgames.com/sharkNumbers/sharkNumbers_v5.html

In Literacy we have been focussing on using capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. Some of us are using joining words to make our sentences longer. Miss Prince’s Phonics group worked really hard on the ay/ai sounds this week. We know that ai usually comes in the middle of a word and ay usually comes at the end.

We love our new class novel – Hodgeheg.  Not only is it a great story, it’s also teaching us about road safety. We have thought of some great ideas to help Max the Hedgehog get across the road safely.

We’ve had some super show and tells this week. MP told us about his Taekwondo achievements and HM told us all about her fundraising for Cash for Kids – we are very proud of you both!

We are enjoying doing the Daily Mile, we try and run for longer each time. Some of us are very speedy!

We did a PE lesson with P2B this week, Mrs Burton taught us a game called Cat and Mouse and we taught P2B our yoga poses.

Some photos of our free play fun – well done to the girls who did some beautiful writing. Mr Wells was very impressed!

No homework next week, just reading books.

Have a relaxing long weekend and we’ll see you all again on Wednesday.

Love P2A and Miss Prince x
