Hibernation, Squirrel Nutkin and yoga in P2A

Another busy week in P2A, we are setting a super example to the new Primary 1 children by behaving sensibly and we’ve earned lots of pegs for walking quietly around school. We are also getting quicker at our morning and end of the day routines.

On Monday our lovely P6 Pals came to see us. They helped us to practise logging onto the laptops. Some of us had time to play on this fun game called Build Your wild Self, this is a fun one to play about on at home:

http://www.buildyourwildself.com/

In Maths this week we have been learning how to find numbers before, after and in between. We used a 100 square to help us. We enjoyed playing this game:

In Literacy we were working in our phonics groups; these groups are very flexible and mean that we are working on the digraphs we need to revise. We are focusing on saying sounds and using sounds in words. We practised writing our sounds in lots of different ways:

During IDL we learnt more about animals that hibernate – we know that hedgehogs, dormice and bats hibernate. We also learnt what animals do to survive hibernation – you could ask us about this at home.

This week we have been listening to stories by Beatrix Potter. We loved the story about Squirrel Nutkin!

We loved it so much that we decided that we would like to make squirrels in art. We learnt how to create texture by layering different materials. Miss Prince was very impressed with how well we worked with our partner to create a squirrel’s tail.

In PE we learnt some yoga poses and practised breathing deeply. We demonstrated resilience when we were learning the tree balance – it was tricky!

Here are some photos of our free play fun:

Looking forward to meeting you all at Meet the Teacher on Tuesday evening.

Have a great weekend!

Numbers to 100, jungle explorers and woodland animals in P2A

Hello and thank you for taking the time to read P2A’s blog. We’ve had a very busy first full week back so we have lots to tell you about!

In PE we used our imaginations and went on a jungle adventure, we became explorers – jumping over logs, swinging through trees, running away from tigers and swimming through rivers! We moved around the space sensibly and followed the instructions.

In Maths this week we have been continuing our work on numbers to 100, focusing on numbers before, after and in between. The Big Numbers Song is helping us gain confidence when counting to 100:

In Literacy we have been revising the sounds and common words we learnt in Primary 1. In Giraffe, the Pelly and Me, Billy opened his own sweet shop full of scrumptious sweeties! We decided to have a go at designing and describing our own sweets, we had fantastic ideas and we were very confident when sharing our ideas with the class.

Our outdoor learning focus is woodland animals, we have decided we would like to learn more about animals that hibernate. We looked at animal habitats and did line drawings showing woodland animals in their habitats:

In P2 we develop our computer skills. Our computer time is on a Monday afternoon, this week some lovely P3 children came to help us. We learnt how to carry a laptop safely and how to open the login page using Ctrl-Alt-Delete (this is tricky!) If you have a computer at home it would be great to practise this.

We are loving having the painting out during freeplay!

Reading books are now up and running, new books will be given out on Mondays and should be handed in on Fridays.

Homework starts next week. Homework will also be handed out on Mondays and should be handed in on Fridays. In homework jotters you will find suggested reading questions, spelling activities, Maths activities and a word list. We recommend completing one reading question, one spelling activity and one maths activity per week but this is very flexible. Children will get a new word list each week.

Have a lovely weekend,

Welcome to P2A

Hello and welcome to our first blog post of the school year! We’ve had a fantastic week getting to know Miss Prince and exploring our new classroom. Miss Prince is very impressed with how well we have settled in. We have done lots of work on our school values and we have received lots of dojo points for displaying our values in the classroom. Here are the actions (just in case the adults need a refresher!)

We have started reading ‘The Giraffe, the Pelly and Me’ by Roald Dahl, we are especially enjoying singing the rhymes and songs in the story. Here are the words to the window cleaners song if you would like to practise at home:

We will polish your glass

Till it’s shining like brass

And it sparkles like sun on the sea

We are quick and polite

We will come day or night

The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me!

Here are some pictures of what we’ve been up to in our new classroom:

On Monday we will get our new reading books. Please don’t hesitate to send me a dojo if you have any questions.

Have a lovely weekend 🙂

P2/3’s Health Week Diary

This week we have recorded what we have been up to every day in a diary. Here are some of our diary entries:

Monday:

This morning I did crocodile Cosmic Yoga and golf. At break time I had popcorn and a peach. I liked the popcorn because it was sweet and salted. The golf was hard because I kept missing the ball! In the afternoon we played toilet tig, I picked the game. On the computer I played a game called the healthy lunchbox game, it was very fun!

by IB.

Tuesday:

Today I did GoNoodle, hospital tig, terminator tig, football, yoga and the mile. I loved it! I want to do it all again!

by DG

Wednesday:

Today it was sports day and I hurt my eye on  a tennis ball. It was very stingy but I still did the races and I WON the running race! It felt amazing. Then we did the bean bag race and I came third.

by EH

Thursday:

Today we did yoga and the theme was Minecraft. We also did Springfield’s Got Talent. Me and Isabel did gymnastics, we got 12 points and the winners got 13 points. After that we made smoothies, they were yummy!

I am extremely proud of every single member of P2/3 this week; they have shown enthusiasm for all the new experiences on offer. Super to see so many confident performers in our talent show auditions too. Congratulations to EF, EH and OM who are going through to represent us in the Springfield’s Got Talent show!

Thank you for taking the time to read our blog,

Letters to Liam in P2/3

In Literacy this week we wrote letters to Liam, telling him all about what we’ve been up to this term. We had so much to write about! We also included questions in our letters, as we want to know all about Liam’s new life in Spain.

In Grammar, some of us have been learning how to use commas in lists. For example; I went to the shop and I bought apples, bananas, oranges and pears. We know to use a comma after each item and to separate the last two items using the word ‘and’.

Over the next few weeks we will be revising our common words, playing lots of games and fun activities. This week we had fun playing common word twister!

In Maths this week we have been learning about weight. We can use the words ‘lighter’ and ‘heavier’ when comparing objects. We estimated and measured using scales and cubes, with some of us moving on to measuring in grams. We know that heavier items can be measured in kilograms.

P5’s digital leaders came to visit us on Thursday, they presented powerpoint presentations on Sumdog top tips. We are loving using Powerpoint at the moment, nearly as much as Sumdog!

Finally, we’ve had lots of fun in the sun this week; practising for sports day, reading Stig of the Dump and rehearsing our Springfield’s Got Talent acts.

Next week admin:

  • No spelling or maths homework – see optional Fitness homework grid
  • Fitness week all week – children can wear sporty clothes
  • Sports day on Wednesday
  • In class auditions for Springfield’s Got Talent on Thursday

Have a lovely weekend,

Speech bubble success in P2/3

Miss Prince is delighted with our Literacy learning this week. We have been learning how to use speech bubbles and some of us have even been writing speech into a sentence using speech marks. We know how to form speech marks correctly (remembering 66 and 99), we know to put speech marks around what the character is saying and to finish the sentence by saying who has spoken. As we love a challenge in P2/3, some of us even had a go at using words instead of ‘said’. Here is a selection of our fantastic work:

In Maths we have been continuing with our work on length. We made sensible estimations and accurate measurements of our hand span and foot length. We enjoyed problem solving, such as finding out the length all the way around our foot using a piece of string.

On Wednesday we had a drama filled IDL afternoon, taking on the role of an animal and acting out scenes from The Messy Magpie story. We had some special visitors who were very impressed with how we used our voices and bodies to become the character.

In Art we studied the environmental artist Andy Goldsworthy. We worked in teams and used natural resources to create our own natural art:

Thank you for reading our blog, have a lovely weekend!

P2/3 class talks round 2, measuring and Peggy Bear!

We rounded off our class talks this week with talks on everyone from Tim Peake to Gene Simmons! The standard has been so high, every child spoke confidently, made eye contact with the audience and showed great enthusiasm for their chosen hero. A big well done to all!

In Maths this week we started work on measure, focusing on length. We began by comparing the length of natural resources outside. Then we went on to measure with a metre stick and ruler. We found estimating tricky but we showed resilience and kept on trying. Some of us had a go at converting between cm and mm.

In Literacy we have been working on magic e and past tense verbs. We can identify verbs in a sentence and change a present tense verb to a past tense verb. For example; I am riding my bike. I rode my bike.

In Science we began work on  the senses. This week we learnt about taste, we learnt about the parts of the mouth we use to taste. We enjoyed tasting a variety of flavours…some more than others!

During our laptop time we worked on our typing skills. We played on Dance Mat Typing. The class really enjoyed this and whizzed through level one. This is a great free resource you can play at home too!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/guides/z3c6tfr

We have brought back the Daily Mile this term, running for an increased amount of time each day. Next week we will be working towards running for a full 15 minutes without stopping! We are learning to pace ourselves, not doing the ‘caveman’ run (the children will explain!) In Futsal we worked on our shooting skills. We are getting better at controlling the ball.

This week we have had the pleasure of having Peggy Bear. We won Peggy Bear by walking quietly around school.

Thank you for reading our blog, have a great weekend!

P2/3 class talks, place value hats and recycling

This week was the start of our ‘My Hero’ class talks in P2/3, wow what a confident class we are! We’ve had talks about everyone from Luke Skywalker to Peter Rabbit. Every child spoke clearly and confidently, with lots of vibrant pictures and PowerPoints. I can’t wait to see what next week’s class talks bring!

In Literacy we have been answering questions on Stig of the Dump and learning about compound nouns. A compound noun is made up of two words, for example, postman. We also finished our Save the Ocean posters:

In Maths we have been reading and sequencing numbers to 1000. We loved taking our learning outside and building 3 digit numbers with our place value hats.

Our IDL focus took us on a journey with Morris the Magpie, we learnt about the devastating impact litter has on woodland wildlife. We worked in teams to recycle items into the correct bins as we know that recycling with help wildlife and make our community greener.

I hope this lovely weather continues into the weekend ☀

A letter from Sir David Attenborough

DG in P2/3 wrote a letter to his hero, David Attenborough, telling him all about our Rubbish Dump Whale assembly…

Guess what… Sir David replied! Amazing!

Thank you for your letter, and pictures. I am so glad you have joined in the fight against waste plastic.

Best wishes,

David Attenborough

Well done, DG!

Joined up success in P2/3

After all the excitement of our class assembly last week we have had a calm and settled week in P2/3.

We decided to recycle our Blue Attenborough boat and create a boat trip role play area, we have a ticket office where you can buy your boat tickets, and a desert island to land on!

In Maths we have been using our knowledge of the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables to solve word problems. We are  very good at taking our time to read the questions and try out different strategies. We are resilient! We love playing buzz to practise our time tables.

In handwriting this term we are learning how to do joined up writing. We absolutely love the challenge of learning a new join and trying it out in our sentence writing.

Our IDL this term is Making Our Community Greener. We already have prior knowledge of the devastating effect plastic is having on the oceans, now we are going to dig deeper and look at how we can reduce, reuse, recycle in Linlithgow. Fun fact, did you know it can take up to 5 years for a banana skin to decompose?!

Class talk information sheets were handed out yesterday, every child has been given a date for their class talk, any questions drop me a dojo.

Have a great long weekend,

Love P2/3 and Miss Prince x
