Good morning P1! Wednesday 3rd June 2020

Good morning everyone,

I hope you are having a lovely week so far. I have seen a lovely competition being advertised just now that I thought you might enjoy taking part in.

You could win a £10 National Book Token for each of your classmates – and surprise them all when schools reopen!

Create a fabulous National Book Token design while you are learning from home; whether it’s our school crest doodled in ink, a pencil drawing of the entire class, or something completely different, they will be choosing one child’s design to put on a National Book Tokens gift card every week for seven weeks.

When schools open up again, the winners and their classmates will each receive a £10 National Book Token – with the winning artwork on it – to inspire you to choose your next favourite book to read.

Follow this link https://www.nationalbooktokens.com/create-a-national-book-token-for-your-class for details on how to enter. Good luck!

This competition got me thinking about reading and why I love it so much. Do you enjoy reading and being read to? What do you like most about it? What type of books do you like best? Do you have a favourite book? Maybe you could find out what everyone in your household likes about reading or what their favourite books are.

These are my favourite books:

You might have heard of some of them. I LOVE reading because you have to use your imagination and you can learn about different people, places and times. Reading can make you feel like you are somewhere totally magical and out of this world! You also learn a lot from reading stories because you have a chance to think about things from other points of view. Reading is also a great way to become a good writer, so there are lots of good reasons to keep reading.

I hope you take some time to think about your favourite books this week and to remind yourself how fun and amazing reading and being read to can be! Good luck if you decide to enter the competition – you are all so creative, we would love to see any designs you create.

Take care everyone and have a really lovely day,

Your P1 Teachers

Good afternoon P1! Tuesday 2nd June 2020

Bonjour!

Today I thought it might be nice to introduce you to some new French words. These are words for things you might see in a school so they will be helpful when we are all back together again.

We are going to use a website to help us say the words properly and to practise them with some games!

1. Go to www.linguascope.com and log in using the details emailed out. If you are unsure of the details, please email your teacher and they can send them out again!

2. Click on the French flag in the beginner’s section.

3. Click on the tab titled “La Vie Au Quotidien” and then click on the icon titled “Dans La Classe”

4. First click on the “Presentation” section – click on each picture and listen to the French word. Try to repeat the words in your best accent!

5. The “Ecoute” section is a nice way to practise the new words. Click on the different ears to listen to one of the words. When you know what the word means, drag the ear to the right picture.

6. The “Jeu De Memoire” game is a bit like the game Pairs. Click on two pictures (don’t worry about reading the French words, just listen to the voice) and if they match you get a pair. If not, try again!

Remember that in P1, we focus on Listening and Speaking skills in French, not on Reading or Writing. Some of the other games are super but might be too tricky in terms of reading.

I hope you enjoy learning some new words in French. Here is a very silly little song that we enjoy listening to in class sometimes to practise our colours and have some fun!

Good luck with your French!

Take care,

Your P1 Teachers

That goes for all the adults out there as well, juggling work and life and home schooling. You are doing a fantastic job.

Here is a little photo of Bennie enjoying the sun at the weekend – we had a lovely socially distanced visit to my parents in the countryside where he likes to run around their trees!

We would love you to send us a little email this week to tell us how everything is going or just to say hello and let us know you are keeping well. If you need any support or have any questions, let us know and we can try and help however we can.

Take care everyone,

Good morning P1! Friday 29th May 2020

Hello everyone,

I hope you are really enjoying this fabulous weather. Isn’t it beautiful to feel the sun on your neck when you are outside? Remember your suncream and sun hats to stay safe in the sunshine!

As you will no doubt be spending lots of time outdoors this weekend, I have found some fun art activities you could try if you think they look fun. You might have some other great outdoor art activities that you could share in the comments.

Outdoor Art:

You could make silly faces using natural materials and/or painted rocks, you could make your own brushes out of natural materials to do some painting, you could paint rocks and play noughts and crosses, you could paint rocks and make a fun version of dominos, or you could collect beautiful things from outdoors and make a design with them!

I hope you all have a super weekend,

Take care,

Mrs Jamieson

Good afternoon P1! Thursday 28th May 2020

Good afternoon everyone!

I hope you are all having a nice week. I have been doing some packing in my flat each evening because my husband and I get the keys to our new house very soon and will have to move everything across – you might think that doesn’t sound like fun, but I have been finding all sorts of things I had forgotten about, like my high school year books and these old photos!!!

The first photo is our horse Jack who we had when I was very little and then there is my grandma and me in Shetland!

This week, we are practising the digraphs /th/ and /wh/ – BBC Bitesize has some great activities to help you practise your sounds at home. Visit the link https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zvq9bdm/articles/zk6f6v4 for /th/ activities. Alphablocks has a nice short video about the sound /wh/ that you can find here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPMDT-sL6l0.

We hope you are having lots of nice outdoors time in the sun this week – it has been so lovely and warm!

Take care,

Your P1 Teachers 😀

Good morning P1! Wednesday 27th May 2020

Good morning,

I hope you have your thinking caps on…

… because it is time for some BRAINTEASERS to start the day off right!!!

Number Brainteaser

Can you figure out how to answer the last sum?

You might need an adult to talk it through with. You might like to write your thoughts down, draw some pictures or use a number-line to help you.

Literacy Brainteaser

How many words can you make using the letters in the Boggle grid?

Remember: each letter must touch the previous letter (diagonally is fine!)

Let us know how you got on with your brainteasers and don’t worry if you need to ask an adult to help you!

Take care and have a lovely day,

Your P1 Teachers

Good afternoon P1! Tuesday 26th May 2020

Bonjour!

I wonder if you have got some energy this afternoon? I hope so, because I have attached a French workout video that we sometimes do in class – and I know that we always end up pretty tired after this one!

Can you hear any of the special instruction words in French?

I love listening to songs in other languages, it is such a good way to learn new words and to get better at saying words in a French accent.

Here is a nice song with some actions that you can try to copy. The lyrics are below the video.

We hope you enjoy practising a little more French today! Have a lovely evening.

Take care,

Your P1 Teachers

Good morning P1! Monday 25th May 2020

Good morning everyone,

I hope you all had a lovely weekend. I spent some time drawing a picture to send to my Granny as it was her 89th birthday! I used oil pastels and drew some of the lovely Spring blossom that we have been seeing recently.

Here is our Learning Grid for this week – Home Learning Grid 25.5.20

We will continue our FairyTale theme this week with the story ‘The Gingerbread Man’ so I have recorded the story for you and Miss McDermott has kindly popped the link in the blog post a couple above this one as I was having some technical issues! Thanks Miss McDermott – you are a star 😀

Here are some resources to help you with our learning focuses this week:

Directions:

Teddy Bear Position PowerPoint

Treasure Map Directions Game Activity

Directions Game

Writing – inventing a character:

Gingerbread Man Character Writing Template (if you do not have access to a printer, please don’t worry – use this sheet to give you an idea of what to draw/write on paper or in a jotter!)

Reading – phonics /wh/ and /th/:

/th/ Sorting Sounds PowerPoint with /ch/ and /sh/ revision

Spot the /th/ sound in this story!

/wh/ Words Quick Read PowerPoint

Phonics challenge: can you add /th/ to complete each of the words on the petals? Try reading them with an adult – you will need help with the ones you can’t sound out.

Remember that there is no pressure to do everything on the learning grid or blog – do what you can and remember to spend lots of time playing too!

We would love it if you could keep in touch each week with your teacher – just a quick email to say hello and that you are doing okay, or to let us know if you would like support with anything, or to show us some lovely pics of what you are getting up to at home. We really love to hear from you and just want to make sure everyone is safe, happy and supported. You are all amazing!

Have a fabulous week everyone,

We really miss you all,

Your P1 Teachers

Good morning P1! Friday 22nd May 2020

Good morning everyone,

Is it windy in Linlithgow? In Edinburgh, it is very windy this morning. It’s actually quite noisy if you listen carefully. It made me think of a poem about the wind that I quite like.

Who Has Seen the Wind?

Who has seen the wind?
Neither I nor you:
But when the leaves hang trembling,
The wind is passing through.
Who has seen the wind?
Neither you nor I:
But when the trees bow down their heads,
The wind is passing by.
Do you like this poem?
I like that they have changed the second sentence around so that the poem rhymes. Can you hear the rhyming words?
I know I have said it before, but I really cannot tell you all how impressed I am with all of you all for all the lovely things that I hear you are doing at home; learning to ride your bike with no stabilisers, helping out making dinner, hanging up with washing to dry in the garden, practising your writing, going on to some number games online, reading to your brothers and sisters…
You are doing an amazing job keeping yourselves safe and helping to create lovely family memories. I really miss you all, and I am so looking forward to when I can see you again, but I am very proud of you all for what you are doing right now. Well done!
Have a wonderful weekend,
Mrs Jamieson

Good afternoon P1! Thursday 21st May 2020

Bonjour,

I’m sorry this post is a bit later in the day than normal – I have been having a bit of trouble with my wifi today so I have been trying to sneak online whenever it is running!

I hope that you are all having a lovely week, we’ve been hearing about lots of the amazing things you have been doing at home and we are all really impressed by all your efforts and enthusiasm. Well done!

This afternoon, or whenever you have time, you could practise the words for the colours in French. Here is a nice video to teach you to sing the Rainbow song in French:

Remember that you can use www.linguascope.com with the log in details that were emailed out to practise French colours. They are in the Beginners section.

Challenge: Can you make a board game to practise your French colours?

Making a Board Game

You will need:

  • plain paper
  • pen or pencil
  • colouring pencils/crayons/pens
  • a dice
  • 2-4 counters

Method:

1. Draw the outline of a board game with a start and finish.

Example:

2. Colour each square. You may end up with more than one square of each colour!

3. Take turns to throw the dice and move your counter that number of spaces. In order to stay on the square you land on, you have to say the colour in French!

4. The first player to reach the FINISH square wins.

You can make your game more exciting by adding in snakes and ladders, or by adding ‘miss a turn’ squares, etc.

We hope you have fun practising your French colours, good luck!

Good afternoon P1! Wednesday 19th May 2020

Good afternoon P1,

I thought that it would be nice to suggest an art activity that you could try at home if you have some free time this week.

Here is a video which talks about a style of art called Pointillism. I love using pointillism to create bright pieces of art and I hope you will enjoy the activity that the lady suggests in the video.

In the video, the lady mentions putting your name on your picture for the PTA, but you don’t need to worry about that – this is for you to display in your home!

In the video, the lady asks you to create an Autumn Tree using pointillism, but perhaps you could try instead to make a Spring tree to match the season that we are in? Here are some pictures that other artists have done of Spring trees using pointillism.

If you don’t have paints at home just now, you could use marker pens, crayons or colouring pencils to make your little dots!

Send us a picture of your lovely art work if you choose to do this activity at home, we would love to see them.

Stay safe, we miss you,  from your P1 teachers!

Good morning P1! Tuesday 19th May 2020

Good morning everyone,

I hope you had a nice Monday and managed to get outside and enjoy some fresh air.

This week, in your learning grid, you have been asked to revise the sounds /ch/ and /sh/ so here are a few activities to help with that:

If there are any technical issues with sound etc. just let us know and we can help you get it sorted.

We have also added some number games on to your Heinemann Active accounts so, if you have time, check them out and see how you get on.

Lastly, a few people have had trouble getting onto the Oxford Owls website so I have double checked and there is a capital B in the learning grid that has sneaked its way in, many apologies! The details are username: p1bLPS or p1aLPS and password: My books   😀

Take care,

Your P1 Teachers

Good afternoon P1! Monday 18th May 2020

Good afternoon everyone,

I hope you all had a great weekend. Let me know in the comments what nice things you did. My husband baked some very tasty banana and peanut butter muffins this weekend so we sat in the garden to eat them and to read our books.

This week we are continuing our Fairy Tales topic. Perhaps you could try to find out what each person in your family’s favourite fairy tale is and why? Maybe they like one that you haven’t even heard of! I like some of the old Scottish folk stories that my dad used to tell me when I was little. Do you know why I put this photo here?

Our story this week is The Elves and the Shoemaker so I have a challenge for you: can you practise tying your shoe laces? Ask an adult to help you if you can’t do it all by yourself!

What other things could you practise this week to help you become more independent? Zipping your jacket up? Choosing appropriate clothes that match the weather outside? Helping make your own meals? Doing some simple chores around the house or garden?

Let your teacher know what sort of things you have been practising to become more independent. I know some of you have already been doing some of these things, well done!

Have a lovely afternoon,

Take care,

Your P1 Teachers

Quiz Time! Friday 15th May 2020

Good morning everybody and well done for all your hard work this week. Every single week you impress me with all the fun and creative learning and playing that you have been doing at home.

You are all wonderful, amazing people and I miss you all very much so it is really nice for me to get emails each week to see and hear about how you are and what you have been doing, or just to say a quick hello.

Well, after being the quiz-master for my friends last weekend and seeing as it is the weekend and you might be looking for something a bit different to do, I decided to write a child friendly quiz for you to do (if you want!) with family and/or friends in your home or on a video call.

P1 Quiz Power Point

I hope anybody who decides to give it a whirl finds it enjoyable – instructions are on the first slide!

Take care everyone and have a lovely weekend when it comes,

Love Mrs Jamieson

Good afternoon P1! Thursday 14th May 2020

Good afternoon everyone!

I was hoping that perhaps this afternoon or when you have time, you might join me in taking a little bit of time to stop and think about some of the little things that have made you smile recently.

Here are three of mine:

  1. I went for a nice walk close to my flat beside the river and it was SO beautiful. I feel very lucky to live near to lots of lovely nature. Do you have some nice places near your home to go for a walk?

2. I came through to my living room earlier today and found this little monkey lying down with all his toys and it definitely made me smile!

3. I found a delicious new recipe for banana blondie bars and tried it out at the weekend. They were a tasty treat!

I wonder what sort of things have made you smile this week? Perhaps you could share some in the comments or have a think about them with your family. It is important to take time now and again to think about all the good things in our lives!

Take care and have a lovely afternoon,

We miss you all so much P1, you are doing such an amazing job staying safe at home and doing all your learning and playing. We think you are all truly fantastic!
