Having lots of fun teaching and learning with P2/1!

P2/1 – Tuesday 12th May

Hello everyone!

Here’s something a little bit different for you to try today! I have made a very special quiz all about our last class topic – Come and Visit Scotland. You will need a grown up to help you to read the questions but I hope that you have remembered lots of facts and will know the answers!

To do the quiz, please just click on the link below.

https://kahoot.it/challenge/09813464?challenge-id=f7e99898-d268-40ac-ab21-33079852aadd_1589148008860

(Grown ups – Please let me know if there are any problems with this as this is the first time that I have used Kahoot on the blog.as opposed to the  live version).

Below is also the Story Time from Home link. This is a new book that I had bought for school but hadn’t managed to read so I hope you like it.

I hope that you are enjoying doing the shape activities this week.   There is also  a separate shape blog page to have a look at if you have time this week but only do what you can.

If you haven’t sent me a message for more than a week, please get in touch and let me know how you are doing.. It is very important that we all stay in touch even though we can’t be together just yet.

Have a good day and try to get outside to play in the fresh air too!

P2/1 – Monday 11th May

Hello P2/1

Welcome back after the weekend.

Before you begin this week’s maths tasks  please watch these short videos on the BBC Bitesize website which tell you all about 2d shapes.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zbtp34j/articles/zfdvvk7

Here is the 2d Shape mat for you to look at that is also mentioned on the home learning plan.

The writing theme for this week is “bears” and all of this week’s stories have come from a collection of books that I keep at home rather than at school.  Hopefully this means that you won’t have heard me read most of the stories before so I do hope that you enjoy them.

Here is the link to the first story.

Thank you for all of the messages and photographs from last week.  As I was at the hub school I wasn’t able to reply to all of you individually but I have enjoyed finding out what you have been up to and you have actually given me an idea for a new video which I will hopefully share with you later in the week. The picture below is a wee clue.

I am not going to tell you anymore for now  though!

Have a good day.

Story Time from Home – Monday 11th May

Hello everyone and welcome to the Story Time from Home page.

I hope that you had a nice weekend and are looking forward to a week of new stories.  This week’s theme is “bears” and all of this week’s books are from my house collection rather than from those that I keep in school, so chances are you won’t have heard me reading any of these stories before.

Here is the link to Monday’s story which is called “Beware of the Bears” and has a very surprising ending indeed!

P2/1 – Friday 8th May

Hello everyone,

I hope that you have managed to have a go at some of  this week’s activities but also been getting outside to enjoy the nice weather too.

I also hope that lots of you got Mrs Webster’s message about wearing your school jumper or something blue when taking part in the Clap for Carers.  Jim, Matthew and I went outside and it was very noisy indeed – someone near us was even playing  a tune on their bagpipes which we listened to when everyone stopped clapping.

If you have been able to decorate a stay safe stone, remember to try and send a photograph or if you are out and about for a walk at the weekend why not try and have a look for some decorated stones.

Please remember to stay safe yourself though and don’t pick them up!

Have a good weekend.

Miss McDermott

P2a P2b P2/1 Story Time From Home Activities – Friday 8th May

Hello boys and girls

Here is the link to today’s story.

https://vimeo.com/416032294/2434090383

You will need to watch it before you can do these literacy tasks which are part of this week’s home learning plan.

The tricky words below were all in today’s story. Find out what these words mean. Try to use them in different sentences throughout the day.  Please remember that you do not need to write your sentences down.

  • proud
  • spectacular
  • grubby
  • trim

How many of the other words from this week’s stories can you remember?

How good are your listening skills? Remember you don’t need to write your answers down – you can just tell a grown up or big brother or sister if you have one.

  • What job did Hugh’s mum and dad do?
  • Why do you think Hugh would not have his hair washed or brushed or combed?
  • What was the exciting letter about?
  • Why could Mrs Tree not be the model?
  • Where was the Scissor Showdown being held?
  • How do you think Hugh felt at the end of the story?

Here is a super collage that I saw online that you might like to try if you’ve time.

Once you have listened to and watched all of the stories, this week draw a picture from your favourite story.

If possible send a photograph of your picture to your class teacher with a message saying why you liked this story best.

Hope you have a good weekend and remember – stay safe and wash your hair as well as your hands!

P2/1 – Thursday 7th May

Hello Boys and Girls

I hope that you are all well.

It’s  only a short message today as I am at St Mary’s Primary School in Bathgate with children whose parents are keyworkers.

I hope you managed to have a go at the literacy tasks yesterday and maybe even the adjectives game that I mentioned too.

Remember that the Story Time from Home link is on a separate page for this week and that there is no writing task because it is a short week.

Missing you all lots!

Like yesterday you will need to watch it before you can do these literacy tasks which are part of this week’s home learning plan.

The tricky words below were all in today’s story. Find out what these words mean. Try to use them in different sentences throughout the day.  You DO NOT need to write your sentences down.

  • wedged
  • spontaneous
  • quivered
  • dismay

How good are your listening skills? Remember you don’t need to write your answers down – you can just tell a grown up or big brother or sister if you have one.

  • What season is it in the story?
  • Why was Cyril’s cupboard empty?
  • What did Bruce dream was inside the tree?
  • Why did Bruce and Cyril fall over the edge of the waterfall?
  • Name 2 other animals that you can see in the story.

If you would like to find out a little bit more about real squirrels you could watch this short You Tube Video.

Or maybe if you ‘ve time have a go at doing some squirrel craft or pictures.

Miss McDermott

EXTRA!

Here is a link to a squirrel news story on the BBC website today that I’ve just read.  As well as being interesting it has some super photos too.

P2/1 – Wednesday 6th May

Hello P2/1

Welcome back again ! Hope everyone managed to have some time off from home learning over the holiday weekend.

As you will see our home learning plan is a bit different as this is such a short week for you.  Grown ups please be aware that I  will be in my hub school on Thursday and Friday so won’t be immediately available on these days for checking and replying to  emails and messages.

One of the home learning tasks this week is to create a stay safe stone and I have posted a picture of the stones that I have decorated below. I haven’t managed to go for a walk yet and leave them somewhere but hopefully I can do this later in the week.  I found it much easier to do the writing using felt pens but you can try different things depending on what you have at home.

This week I  will be  posting the Story Time from Home link on a separate blog page as it includes some literacy tasks for you to try.  You will need a grown up to help but hopefully you will enjoy these for a wee change.

Please note grown ups – there is no story writing task this week.

I can see that quite a few of you have been have been logging on to  the Sumdog website. Remember that like Numbots, this is your choice and I will not be setting work on here for you to do. It can be good fun playing games online but you should not be doing this all the time.

Enjoy the sunshine today – it is a lovely day here in Bathgate and hopefully it is in Linlithgow too!

Hello everyone

Here is the link to today’s story.

https://vimeo.com/415243993/20a59e20a7

You will need to watch it before you can do these literacy tasks which are part of this week’s home learning plan.

The tricky words below were all in today’s story. Find out what these words mean. Try to use them in different sentences throughout the day.  You DO NOT need to write your sentences down.

  • lurked
  • pounced
  • creepy
  • weary

How good are your listening skills? Remember you don’t need to write your answers down – you can just tell a grown up or big brother or sister if you have one.

  • How many cats are in the Tibbles Family?
  • What is the name of Billy’s baby brother?
  • Why did Billy not like the shed?
  • Why was Billy glad that he wasn’t by himself when he went upstairs?
  • How did the bed get broken?
  • Who was not happy about sharing at the end of the story?

Talk about why sharing is important.  Can you think about a time when you have had to share something? It might have been at home or even when you were back at school.

If you’ve time here’s a link to a simple  how to draw a cat video that you might like to try . The cat looks a little bit like Billy Tibbles in the story. When you  open the link you might need to scroll down to get the video..

Here’s my drawing!

P2/1 – Friday 1st May

Hello Boys and Girls

I can’t believe that it’s the 1st of May already. Well done to everyone who has been taking up the challenge of making their own calendars – they all look fantastic and will help you practise your days, months, seasons and numbers too.

We do have another calendar in our class as you know and I have brought this home too. Here’s the picture for the month of May!

The grown ups won’t be surprised that’s its got cats on it but you will be able to tell them it is actually “kitten yoga”.  Perhaps this isn’t  a yoga pose that you can try at home though.

Here is the link to today’s Story Time From Home which does include both my cats – Tufty and Cleo. Did you know it is the 20th Story Time video already?

https://vimeo.com/413672744/f84cf82b20

I do hope that you enjoy it. I thought you might also enjoy seeing this lovely rainbow made out of plastic bottles.  It is outside my neighbours house so that everyone in my street can see it and hopefully it makes them feel a little more cheerful.

I am working in the hub school today so I won’t be able to check or reply to messages today.

Please enjoy the holiday weekend and take some time off from your home learning to do something nice.

Missing you all very much!

Miss McDermott

P2/1 – Thursday 30th April

Hello Everyone

I hope that you are all safe and well.

As you can see from the calendar it’s a rather rainy day in Bathgate this morning for the last day in April so perhaps you are going to have to do some indoor activities. I thought I would let you see this fantastic calendar and Kitty who is getting on fine as you can see!

Here is the link for today’s story which includes all of the Oxford Reading Tree family.

https://vimeo.com/413241292/acaed4d4cc

Remember as well as taking your time to write the story you should also take your time when drawing the picture too.  No stick people just because you are not in the classroom!

If you haven’t done so already you  could have a go at making a calendar today or making some puppets like I mentioned on Monday’s Story Time video.  You don’t even have to make puppets of Biff and Chip – you could make them of your family. LIke this…

I know that you have been now been sent passwords for the Sumdog maths website. It is really important that the first time you do this that you do it by yourself.  If your grown ups or big brothers and sisters tell you all the answers the next time you do it, you will keep getting questions that are too tricky for you and meant for older boys and girls!

I am not going to be giving you specific activities to do on Sumdog. Please just have a go and do what you can when you can but don’t be doing it all day either.

I hope that you have a good day, whatever you do !

Miss McDermott
