the children have been learning about the Emergency Services and how to get in touch with them.
In small groups they created little plays about an emergency when they needed to dial 999 and ask for the Police, Ambulance, Fire or Coastguard.
They have loved playing with Emergency vehicles in class, especially the ‘Oscar Charlie’ helicopter.
Another Monday afternoon exploring our amazing local area. A walk in the Strom Road and down to the little beach to complete todays task…….’what can you make?’
Some groups decided to do dam building…….
Others diverted the water flow into new channels….
the children came up with so many different ideas………..
There was also time to explore the shoreline and find out what lives there.
The best way to practice counting out loud is to have lots of fun while doing it. The primary 1 children built an obstacle course and took turns at being the leader and counting to 30, controlling everybody who was running around, under, through, behind, over obstacles.
They presented their idea for fruit pots in assembly a few weeks ago and designed pot shaped adverts to display on the Health Committee board.
Today the children were very busy……washing, chopping and sorting fruits into little pots.
The children were very excited to welcome all the classes and staff to come and get a fruit pot at breaktime.
The children have been learning about tally marks and this has really helped improve their ability to count in 5’s.
The primary one’s collected flowers sticks and stones and created this pictograph together outside.
The children have loved carrying out surveys and asking each other questions.
The primary ones practiced sorting objects using different criteria. It could be by colour, shape or size.
They worked really well with a partner discussing how they were going to sort the objects and taking turns at different stations.
As part of our IDL about ‘On Our Doorstep’ the children practiced using a compass and looking for different landmarks in different directions.
They worked in their groups of four to complete the task and had great fun.
There was time left before heading back to school so they had a giant whole school game of ‘Octopus’ at the Strom Pitch.
Great teamwork from the children working together to create a ‘hot tub’ which became a ‘chocolate flavoured hot tub’ with the addition of some mud!
The children had a snack area and enjoyed sitting together outdoors in the sunshine.
Lots of engineering going on to make the water flow around bends and pour into different containers. Also using the water as a force to push objects down the pipes and figuring out how to make the water flow faster and slower.
Children’s imaginations are wonderful….these vehicles were taking them all over the world and beyond!
And there is always time to do a bit of climbing amongst the trees. The children learn how to do this safely and are really good at helping each other.
Go Furt means get outdoors………It was a chilly 3 or 4 degrees on Friday morning but the children were still keen to get outside to build shelters and play together.
We will be heading out every Friday to make the most of our wonderful outdoor space at Whiteness. There is a shed full of loose parts which the children use to develop so many important skills including problem solving, cooperation, teamwork, etc.
It is fantastic seeing them having so much fun together and there imaginations are just the best!
It was great to see the children dressed up as all different characters or wearing their pyjamas to school last week.
It was also wonderful to see how enthusiastic they were about stories and books.
During Buddying time they got to share some of their favourite books with their buddies and draw some favourite characters together.
Today the children came to school dressed in red and learned a little bit about Comic Relief and the fundraising they do.
it was lots of fun playing games and doing activities that the p7 pupils had planned.
In the afternoon they watched as the p7’s got a soaking in the stocks followed my Miss McLoed and Mrs Colclough.
This term the children are enjoying African Drumming lessons with Joy. Lots of concentration and confidence building going on in these classes.
As well as drumming the children learn about the drums and where they come from. There is also time for lots of games, dancing and singing during the lessons.
Today was the start of the swimming lessons with Mr Kirkness at Scalloway Pool.
The children did so well listening to instructions and following all the new routines. Everyone had a great time in the pool.
There is also time for snack at the poolside and also a bit of spelling, reading and maths. It is a very busy morning for the children.
It was great to meet Chloe who shared lots of songs, rhymes and stories with the children. They were all so excited and engaged and really enjoyed joining in and having a go with the puppets and actions.
The primary 2’s never received their Read, Write and Count bags before Christmas so Chloe sorted that and they arrived yesterday. We will look at them in class this week, and try out the resources and ideas and the children will them home at the end of the week.
The children measured, cracked, poured, mixed and got all the ingredients combined to make a perfect pancake (dropped scones) mix.
The children learned how to look for the bubbles in the cooking pancake mix to know when to turn it. While the pancakes were cooking they all had a go at tossing a pancake in the air- great fun!
At snacktime the children chose their favourite topping and enjoyed their pancake day treat.
The bairns were so excited today and were all ready for the Nesting and Girlsta Jarl Squad coming this morning.
They had painted a galley and all the children in the school made themselves into Vikings to go inside and around it. It looked great in the school hall.
The children also made collage pictures of Viking longships on the sea. They used paint, torn paper, foam shapes, pens, wooden sticks and card for all the different parts. They are so colourful and look amazing.
The bairns had great fun at our class party on Wednesday afternoon. Lots of charging around, noise and excitement! Flashing lights and party food made it just a great way to end term two.
Last week the children had Christmas dinner at school. The cooks at Whiteness are amazing and the children really enjoyed it, especially the pigs in blankets.
The children have had great fun creating these aliens after reading a story in class with Miss Jamieson. There was a lot of discussion and many amazing descriptive words about their characters. The Primary two’s practised their ICT skill by typing and printing out fancy lettering for words to add to the display.
Well done Primary 123 who raised an amazing £331.29 for Children in Need today.
They organised a coin collection in the school and got everything ready for other classes to come and sort their coins into the different tubs.
The children did really well and had to ensure the correct coins went into the correct buckets.
They had spent time the day before in pairs and small groups preparing the buckets and learning about the different coins as well as where the money collected is going to.
The children had a choice of whether to re-cycle their bags into something new or to design a new Bag for Life to re-use.
There were so many amazing designs and such creativity from all the classes. It was difficult for the p123 Eco-Committee to judge but well done to Evie, Freyja, Ella, Merryn, Eve and Aylee.
The p123 did a presentation in assembly two weeks ago about how we can re-use, re-cycle and reduce waste to help the environment and announced the competition then. They showed off all their examples of how they have re-used and re-cycled their bags.
Halloween is always so much fun and lends itself so well to the classroom with exciting fun learning opportunities. Below the children created a potion with many disgusting ingredients, using magic words and actually getting it to bubble up and overflow the cauldron. The potion made lots of weird and interesting things happen. Children are so creative and imaginative.
They wrote out their chosen ingredients and shared spells with each other.
The primary ones had to use their phonic sounds and choose the correct ingredients to read magic words.
The classroom has a Haunted House area with lots of Halloween creatures and costumes to use.
There have been a few disgusting days in the water tray with slime and goo, full of spiders and snakes. And other opportunities to measure weigh and create bottles of potions with different materials.
The children can’t wait to scare their parents with these ‘teethy’ symmetrical pumpkins!
