mercredi le vingt-quatre juin

Good morning and welcome to our last day of school for this academic year.

See the source image

It has been so strange since we have been in lockdown. I have missed  seeing you all so much and being in our classroom together.

See the source image

I have loved having the privilege of being your teacher this year and whoever your next teacher is, they will be very lucky to have such wonderful young people in their class!

How would you introduce yourself to a new teacher? I remember the lovely letters that I received last year when some of you introduced yourselves.

Here is a template to give you some ideas. What would a teacher like to know?

  • any brothers and sisters in school?
  • sports, clubs, hobbies and interests
  • any favourite subjects in school?
  • information about lockdown activities
  • your own achievements
  • what are you looking forward to?

You could write or type out your letter and bring it in when we return to school – your teacher would be delighted to receive it.

Before we finish for the year, I want to share some of our special class times with you. Thanks for the memories Primary 4/5.

mardi le vingt-trois juin

The thought for Tuesday is this….

See the source image

This is a great thought for today, because it is World Olympic Day!! Just think of all the athletes in all disciplines trying out a new activity when they were young, not knowing how expert they would become! This is what I say to you, isn’t it? How do you know whether you can do something unless you try??

See the source image

It is very important that the day is celebrated this year because the Olympic Games which should have taken place in Tokyo, Japan have been postponed until 2021 due to the Coronavirus.

Literacy

Here are a couple of videos to introduce you to some of the history behind the Olympic Games.

Date and I can answer questions about the Olympic Games

Use the information in the text and from the links to answer the questions clearly and in detail.

3. Traffic light  and comment on your comprehension skills. Have you checked for meaning, sentence structure and punctuation?

4. I have assigned a few books on your Epic site linked to the Olympics for you to look at.

Numeracy

  1. Start off with 10 minutes on Sumdog.
  2.  The focus today is place value linked to times.

As you can see from the chart, the times are given to the place value tenths (of a second). Yohan Blake’s time is 10 whole seconds and 2 tenths of a second which is written as 10.2 seconds.

Use the information to put the runner’s times into the correct order and then answer questions about the information.

Date and I can use place value to order times correctly.

3. Traffic light 🚦 and comment on your confidence using decimal numbers.

Extra

There are some great interactive and practical activities on this site e.g. designing your own sports equipment and creating a torch relay, but there are also loads of other ideas.

https://www.getset.co.uk/resources/travel-to-tokyo/indoor-activity

I hope that you have enjoyed your learning linked to World Olympic Day and hopefully we will celebrate the Olympics taking place in Tokyo next year.

Our final wellbeing thought for the week is ……

What have I done and what am I going to do to help me do well in my learning?

Literacy

  1. Spelling test. What have you been doing as a learner to help you learn your spellings? Have you practised, made corrections, been tested by an adult, made links?  Think about how you learn.
  2.  Your literacy focus involves writing a recipe for success. As you know you need ingredients for a recipe, so think about some aspects of your learning that are important.

Here are examples to help you think of some ideas – also think about our SKILLS FOR LEARNING wall – communication, creativity, self-management, working with others, problem solving and enquiry.

See the source image

See the source image

Date and I can write a recipe for successful learning

Think of the 5 most important ingredients for you to be a successful learner. You can illustrate your recipe and make it into a useful learning tool for yourself.

3. I hope that you have thought carefully about your own ways to make your learning the best it can be. Share your ideas with adult – can they identify these ingredients in your learning experiences?

Numeracy

  1. Start by going onto Sumdog and work to achieve the skills level you are working on.
  2.  Our focus today is capacity.  Capacity is the total amount of fluid that can be contained in a container. It is the word we use when we are measuring liquids.

This link shows a measuring jug, what the scales look like and how to measure the amount of liquid in the jug.

https://youtu.be/GFTlete-nMM

Date and I can measure the capacity of liquid in ml.

Look at the scales and intervals carefully when deciding on the measurement of liquid in each measuring jug.

3. Traffic light 🚦 your answers. Which learning skills have you used to complete this task? Are there any that weren’t on your Recipe for Success?

4. This game lets you practise reading the capacity of liquids.

Extra

As we are thinking about keeping going with our learning and trying something new, here is a Health and Wellbeing grid for you to try out. There might be activities here that you haven’t tried before, so give them a go!

So, until we meet again next week………

jeudi le dix-huit juin

Let’s get ready to rumble …. it’s Thursday!

Our Health and Wellbeing theme for today is to BE ACTIVE!

See the source image

What are 2 ways in which you can be more healthy this week?

See the source image

Literacy

  1. Spelling – Think of a move and spell out the letters of each word while you are moving. Here are some ideas for moves.

2.  Let’s write out some instructions for a game.

Here is information about a game of cards called Rummy.

Handy Hints

  •   We know that instructions have to be very clear
  •   Subheadings for information
  •   Use numbered steps
  •   Use imperative “bossy” verbs like take, put, deal, etc.

How to Write - Instructions Display & Poster Pack

Date and I can write clear instructions for a game

Use a template like this one to write out the instructions clearly.

See the source image

Now try to play the game – were your instructions successful?

Numeracy

  1. Starter for 10 minutes on Sumdog  – let’s make a skill level change this week!

2.  Let’s stay with data handling and use these skills to find out information from labels.

Date and I can use food label information to make healthy choices

Use the information on the labels to answer these questions carefully.

3.  Traffic light and comment on how well you were able to find and use the information to answer questions.

Extra

Being physically fit helps your overall wellbeing, so here is an activity which you can keep working at to improve your physical strength, speed and stamina. Pick just a few to do each day and then try your 2nd and 3rd attempts at intervals across a week – don’t try to do it all at once and remember to warm up and stretch before you start!!

Being active and healthy is helped by having enough sleep 😴. For 8 to ten year olds you should be getting about 10 hours sleep each night in order for your body and mind to recharge. The game below shows you things to avoid in order to get a good night’s sleep.

We started with a panda and we’re ending with pandas. I hope that you have a great night’s sleep and lovely sweet dreams. Have a look at one of Mrs McMillan’s relaxation videos on Take a Moment – found on the school blog, they might help you to sleep, too!

mercredi le dix-sept juin

Welcome to wellbeing Wednesday.

The wellbeing theme for today is to connect.

See the source image

Literacy

  1.  Do any of your spelling words connect together? Write down any that you could group together and give a reason for your choices.
  2.   In order to get connected, you are going to invite people to a pretend Zoom or Skype meet, picnic or garden party.

This link takes you to a reminder of the important information that you need when you write an invitation.

https://youtu.be/t9Nik16C2tM

See the source image

Here is an example template or you could design your invitation using ICT.

Date and I can create an invitation to an event

See the source image

3. Check your invitation – does it contain all the necessary information for the event?

Numeracy

  1. Sumdog starter – at least 10 minutes on Sumdog maths
  2.  You have already created an invitation for an event, so now you are going to bring different number skills together to organise the budget for the food and drink at the event.

Date and I can budget money to organise refreshments for a party

You have £50.00 to spend on refreshments and the chart tells you how to organise the information.

Handy hints

  •  check how many items are in a pack
  •  use a calculator to check your total cost.

Add up all the costs so that you know how much the party refreshments have cost all together. How much did you spend? Was there any change from £50.00? If there was, how much?

3. Traffic light and comment on your skills in finding out the costs of items and working to a budget.

4. Here’s a site that will help you develop you skills in calculating money and using combinations of coins.

https://www.kidsmathgamesonline.com/money/funshopping.html

Extra

If you can, try to arrange an event with family members (socially distanced in the garden) and enjoy the experience of socialising, eating and chatting with one another.

What can I do to value the world around me?

During lockdown, the natural noises have been heard more clearly  and people have had time to notice and enjoy what is around them when going for walks.

Image result for look at nature for kids cartoon

  1. Practise spelling kindness words – please create a wordsearch on https://thewordsearch.com/maker
  2.  Today’s language focus is handwriting. By now, I hope that your letters and joins are very impressive!

Read this poem to help you think about the natural world.

Date and I can use joined handwriting to write out a nature poem.

Please copy out the following poem and use the lines as the poet has done.

3. Traffic light and comment on your handwriting – are you pleased with it?

Numeracy

  1.  Join in on Sumdog maths  for at least 10 minutes.

lundi le quinze juin

Monday morning greetings, everyone!

See the source image

Can you believe that we are starting the last full week of the school year?   Let’s make it a great one !!

This week is going to be slightly different because we will be focusing on different aspects of ……..

See the source image

Each day we will focus on one of the ways shown below.

See the source image

Today we are going to start with …..

What can I do to show some kindness?

Literacy

  1. This week’s spellings link to the focus for today, being kind and giving.  Practise spelling these words this week
  • – write them out 3 times and check all the letter
  •  – look up any words that you’re not sure of

kindnesspositive,  supportiveappreciatethoughtfulhappiness, complimentskillfulproudtalented.

2. I would like you to write and give compliments to four people. These can be anybody that you choose, but one must be for a family member.

You could use a template like this or design one of your own.

You could take a photo and send that to the person, text the compliment, write it as a letter or decide on your own method.

I’m sure that it will make someone’s day !!

Numeracy

  1. Go onto Sumdog maths and give your mental maths brain a stretch.
  2. Thinking about the number skills you have been practising I want you to use aspects of this to help you ……

Design a kindness game

  • board game
  • jigsaw puzzle
  •  bingo
  •  make a jar of kindness with different scores for different act  whatever you can think of!

You could use times tables, fractions addition and subtraction, time or even data handling! Here are a few  ideas:

Roll a RAK (Random act of Kindness)

A board using times tables, but add in acts of kindness that people can perform before moving on.

See the source image

or .. include acts of kindness in a snakes and ladders game. The numbers do not have to go 1,2,3,etc, you can make up your own pattern to practice your number learning – go up in 5s, start at 100 and work backwards, all odd numbers etc.

3. Play your game and decide whether it works!

Extra

Have a go at some kindness art and crafts. Here’s an example of a complimentary cloud , but there are lots of online ideas for you to look at for ideas.

vendredi le douze juin

Got that sunshine in my pocket, got that good soul in my feet ……

See the source image

Hopefully after that little Trolls introduction,  you’re all ready for a fun day of learning action!!  No Trolls (pupils) left behind!

Literacy

  1. It’s spelling check time – do you know your en from your on endings? Now is the time to prove it!
  2.   We are going to create an alternative ending in our writing today.

Watch this video to get some ideas for what makes a great ending for a story and what makes a very unsatisfactory ending.

https://youtu.be/cGzhncDP3ac

This is a great film  – based on the traditional tale of Little Red Riding Hood to help you think about alternative endings and different sides of a well-known story.

See the source image

Date and I can write an alternative ending to a well known story.

I have given you a writing frame based on Little Red Riding Hood, but you could easily use the sections if you want to think about another traditional tale or well known story.

Have fun and I’m sure that you will be able to write some terrific alternative endings.

3. Read over your ending and think about your ending – is it reflective, a twist or dialogue? Let an adult read your work and put their comment into your jotter, too!

Numeracy

  1.  Starter – continue to develop your skills on Sumdog for at least 10 minutes.
  2.   Our focus today is going to be finding fractions of a number .

This link is a great reminder of how to calculate one fraction and from there move on to answer more challenging fractions.

https://youtu.be/ZthbIXm8_RU

See the source image

Date and I can use division to find fractions of numbers

Handy hints

  • Use the information above to help you with the numerator and demoninator.
  • For 1 (a) the fraction coloured orange is one sixth.
  • Remember that the bigger the denominator, the smaller the part e.g. one quarter is a bigger part than one tenth.

3. Traffic light 🚦 and comment on your understanding of the link between division and finding fractions of numbers.

4. Practise your fractions skills by trying out some of these games.
