jeudi le trente et un mai

In the second episode of The Giant of Thistle Mountain, everyone was spreading rumours and gossiping about the giant moving into one of the caves at the top of the mountain. After sharing our “news” about the giant, we thought about evidence to prove the claims – did we have any? We also realised that we were being very negative about the giant and this led to a discussion about Rights and the problems of discrimination. What does the giant want and will he ruin the chances of Snow Valley winning the best Rights Respecting Village competition? Stay tuned for the further episodes of our topic.

As part of our Health Week activities we have been learning about physical, emotional and mental health and the importance of holistic wellbeing. The Cosmic Kids web site is great for yoga moves and is set in a variety of different locations with associated stories. The children made lily pads using origami – the Japanese art of paper folding which is also very useful as a calming activity. We were also learning about the power of positive thinking.

Have a safe and enjoyable weekend and we will see you on Tuesday!

 Number

This week we have been looking at the links between multiplication and division and once we are familiar with the stations of the times tables, it helps us to make the division connections (fact families).

Think how many times can I get the times table number into the big number?

 30 ÷ 5 – it is the 5 times table so count up in 5s until you reach 30 – 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 – 6 times    so 30 ÷ 5 = 6

Complete your number activity sheet – basic division questions

Keep practising all the times tables covered so far by your group.

Ask someone to challenge you to help become quicker at recalling the answers.

 Health Week

We have just had our own Woodlands Sports Day which included 12 different activities including a snack station. I would like you to design your own circuit of activities but it does not have to be in school!

It could be in the woods, with log step-ups, or at the seaside or in the playpark, or an imaginary setting.

Have fun thinking about 6 healthy activities and a healthy snack stop.

Draw out a map of your setting and make sure that your activities are well labelled.

Again, you can word process if you want to and make your map colourful with activity labels.

We were practising our times tables using the number of legs on different creatures. Today we were making links to our times tables by creating fact triangles and from that finding links to division. When we had found out how many enclosures each type of animal needed, we could start to create our own Division Zoo. Look out for the finished zoos next week!

We are looking forward to Sports Day tomorrow and it should be lots of fun. Make sure that you are wearing suitable sports clothes and footwear, bring a hat to protect your head from the sun and make sure that sun factor has been applied before school so that everyone can be as protected as possible, if the sun is strong.

Looking forward to a brilliant day, tomorrow!

Wild about Scotland!

We had a very special visit from the Wild About Scotland education bus today. We had a great time finding out about animals which are native to Scotland.  We also identified six different factors that are affecting them and putting them in danger. I wonder how many people can remember all six!

jeudi le dix mai

This morning we were developing our skills of visualisation. We listened to two different poems and thought about the words that the poet used to help us create an image in our minds. We also recognised that the poems had a different feel to them – one was exciting and happy but the other was quieter and calmer.

This afternoon we were introduced to ABC Music by Gillian. She showed us how we could adapt songs so that we could include our own moves.

We played percussion instruments and followed the directions  of our conductors.
