• Annual Data Checks

Students have been issued with their annual data checks.  Can all parents & carers please check that all information is accurate and amend if necessary.  Data checks should be returned to the school office as soon as possible.

• Values Badges
  • S1 – Blue (Achievement)
  • S2 – Red (Fun & Friendship)

At year group assemblies this week students have been issued with a values badge.  Each year group has been assigned one of the school values as their main value and the coloured badges reflect each of the values.  Student should pin their badge on the lapel of their blazer.

• Parents as Partners Meeting 

The first Parents as Partners meeting of session 2019/20 will take place on Monday the 26th of August at 18:30.  All parents & carers are welcome and invited to attend.

• Extra Curricular Clubs

Extra curricular clubs will be up and running again next week.  Students should look at the big screen in the social area, departmental boards & twitter for all clubs that will be up available for them to attend.

• Sporting News

Congratulations to S3 students Ami Robertson & Caitlin Moran who were selected to attend the Scotland Woman’s u15 Training Camp this week.

• Lockers

Any student who is interested in obtaining a locker for the year should bring in a padlock & £5 deposit and listen out for the tannoy announcements of when to come down.

We are delighted to welcome back all pupils and staff for a new school year, we hope everyone had an enjoyable and restful summer break and are looking forward to the 2019/20 session.  It has already been a busy start with lots going on.

• Values
  • S4 students from the Columba 1400 project were in school during the inservice day to introduce the new school values to staff. Developing the new school values was part of their Leadership project.  The values will become part of every day life here in St Andrew’s High School. They will be used in conversations in classes with staff & pupils. The overall school ethos will improve further as a result of the values being in place.  Our new school values are

• Proceedures
  • During PSHE Students have been reminded of the various procedures that are in place in relation to absence from school, appointments, late coming, feeling unwell during the school day and uniform.  These procedures can be viewed here – SAHS procedures
• Feast of the Assumption Mass
  • Thanks to Father James & Father Ghislain for celebrating the Feast of the Assumption Masses on Thursday.  We welcome Father Ghislain to our school as assistant chaplain to Father James.
• Lockers
  • Lockers will be available for use from next week.  Students should listen out for the tannoy messages for more information.  Students who had lockers last year should report to the school office to confirm if they would like to keep that locker this year.

Another busy week in school and abroad with two groups of students being away on trips to Germany & Spain.

• Munich Trip
  • New S5/6 students enjoyed a STEM trip to Munich in Germany.   The trip started with a trip to the Deutsches Museum where students were able to see the first ever calculators, logarithms and Möbius strips.  Mr Kirkwood also got to test the effects of circular motion.  Students attended an Astronomy Across the Spectrum workshop, an ESO exhibition and a Planetarium show.  Other tour highlights included visits to the Olympiaturm, the BMW Welt and the Allianz Arena home of Bayern Munich.   Thanks to Miss McVake, Mr Kirkwood, Mr Armour & Miss McNicol for organising the trip.  Photos & videos from the trip can be viewed on the STEM, Maths, Science twitter pages.
• Madrid Trip
  • New S4 students enjoyed a trip to Spain run by the Modern Languages department.  Highlights of the trip were visits to the Palacio Real (Royal Palace of Madrid), a tour of the Bullring where students learned about the controversial significance of bullfighting in Spanish culture, the Templo de Debod, a tour of the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium home of Real Madrid and a visit to the Parque Warner theme park.  Thanks to Mr O’Donnell, Mr Curley, Miss Donnelly, Miss Wallace and Miss Banks for supervising the trip.  Photos & videos from the trip can be viewed on the Modern Languages Twitter page

• Garden Party

Parents and staff joined the Gardening group for the Garden Party to celebrate the completion of their John Muir Award.  The students put on a group presentation to showcase their work over the year before taking the guests  to see the garden.  Well done to all those involved with the gardening project.   Photographs of the presentations and party can be seen on the Support for Learning & Wider Achievement twitter pages.

• Music – National Play to Learn

Some of our pupils had the amazing opportunity to play alongside International classical violinist Nicola Benedetti and composer/conductor Sir James MacMillan at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall as part of the National Play to Learn day.  More than 1200 secondary school pupils from across Scotland performed in one of the largest orchestras assembled in Scotland.  A great experience for all those involved.

• Bikeability 

The PE department enjoyed a day of cycle training with Ross Sweeney from Active Schools.  Staff are now qualified to deliver the Bikeability levels 1 & 2 in school and we look forward to rolling this programme out next year.

• Caritas

S6 Caritas students were visited by Martin Mann from Missio Scotland.  Thanks to Martin for giving students an overview of the work of Missio Scotland and the opportunities that will be available to them throughout their Caritas  Award journey.

• Flipout Reward Trip

New S4 students enjoyed a reward trip to Flipout in Glasgow following a very successful year as part of Mr Shaw’s Focus Group.  Well done to all those students who have benefited from being part of this and to Mr Shaw for all his work in leading this initiative.

• Pupil Success

Congratulations to Skye Moore (new S3) who recently won Gold in the International Junior Dance Jazz category of the BCA Cheer & Dance Classic 2019. Skye is now looking forward to competing at the 2020 World Championships with her Firebird Dance Company team. Well done Skye.

• Prom

The Class of 2019 celebrated the end of their time here in St Andrew’s High School with the annual Prom. Dalziel Park in Motherwell was the venue this year and it was a tremendous night for the departing year group, all of whom looked fantastic in their finery and a great time was had by all.

Many, many thanks to those members of staff who worked tirelessly in support of this years Prom and to all staff who came along to make sure that the evening was a total success.

• Music & Drama Summer Concert

Our Music & Performing Arts faculty once again put on a wonderful showcase of the range of talents our students have in Music & Drama.  Well done to all our students who performed on the evening and thanks to all those who attended.

• Social Subjects International Conference

Students from S4-6 took part in this years NLC International Conference.  The students acquitted themselves very well as they debated topics such as Climate Change and Terrorism against schools from across North Lanarkshire.

• Social Subjects

Our new S2 students enjoyed a trip to the Kings Theatre to take in a performance of the Horrible Histories show.  Our S3 geographers were out enjoying some outdoor learning by conducting a traffic count (from the safety of the school grounds) of vehicles using the busy Old Monkland Road.

• Gardening Group 

Our Gardening Group have been busy working on their vegetable plot ahead of their Garden Party on Thursday 20th June.   The Garden Party will give the boys a chance to show off their hard work as well as receiving their John Muir Award certificate too.

• County Sports Day 2

Another amazing performance from our students with an incredible 53 medals over the 2 days of the NL Athletics Championships.  The students achieved a Championship winning performance points total of 149 from 

 12 Gold Medals  24 Silver Medals  17 Bronze Medals

• Sports Day Prizegiving

It was a packed out Games Hall for the Sports Day Prizegiving.  Well done to all those who picked up medals following their successes on Sports Day.  Congratulations to classes 1B and 2E who were victorious in the Sports Day Class Championships after a very strong competition.

• Caritas Awards Ceremony 

Our S6 Caritas Award students  were invited to the SSE Hydro in Glasgow to receive their awards along with students from across Scotland .  Mr Elder had the privilege of welcoming the students onto the stage to collect their award.  Congratulations to all our Caritas Award winners.

• BGE Awards Assemblies

Congratulations to all students in S1-S3 who won a merit award and badge at the BGE Awards Assemblies.  Thanks also to the S3 parents/carers who attended the S3 assembly in the afternoon.

• S1 Tinto Hill Challenge

Around 100 S1 students tackled the Tinto Hill Challenge climb in aid of St Andrew’s Hospice.  It wasn’t a challenge for some students who were up and down the climb in no time at all.  Thanks to Miss Campbell in Social Subjects for organising the event.  All sponsor money should be returned to Miss Campbell as soon as possible.

• Primary 7 Transition Days & Information Evening 

We welcomed the parents & carers of our new S1 students to the school on Monday evening for Transition Information Evening.  We hope they had an informative evening going round the various subjects they will be studying next year.  As always we are grateful to our wonderful student helpers for their input and support throughout the evening.

• Achievement Avenue Reward Trip

Social Subject Students in S1-S3 enjoyed a trip to Holywood Bowl and Gavit-8 following their successes in the Achievement Avenue project.  All students and staff had a great day.

• Duke of Edinburgh

Well done to all our students who completed their Bronze Qualifying Duke of Edinburgh Expedition in the Penthill Hills.   Brilliant effort by everyone over the two days of camping, walking and outdoor cooking.  Thanks to Mr Shaw in Social Subjects for leading our students this year.

• Pupil Success

Congratulations to Joshua Burke (S6) who has signed a senior contract with Airdrieonians FC. We are delighted for Joshua who has shown through his time here in St Andrew’s HS  that he is an incredible young man, being both intermediate & senior Dux medalists as well as a really talented sportsman.
