‘Read to Succeed’ Authors Tour 2019

Last year under the Scottish Attainment Challenge, we in North Lanarkshire launched a ‘Read to Succeed’ initiative aimed at primary to high school transition. The main aim was to make reading for pleasure a priority. Due to last years success,  funding was again allocated to ensure that each high school had an author visit for S1. The authors that visited St. Andrew’s High School were Alex Scarrow and Martin Stewart. Ten pupils also attended the closing ceremony in St. Ambrose High school with authors Keith Charters and Dan Freedman. The pupils  received a signed copy of a book by Dan Freedman.

N5 Early Education and Childcare Course

The N5 Early Education and Childcare pupils had a visit from Marion Kunderan, Librarian for Children and Young Adults from CultureNL. Marion organises Bookbug Sessions and Children’s activities in the public libraries in North Lanarkshire. She explained the format of the sessions which include songs, stories and rhymes. Bookbug Packs are given to every child in Scotland – they are free and full of brilliant books and goodies to share with the child and are designed to encourage a love of reading and demonstrate how important books and reading are in a childs development. . Marion showed a film of the Bookbug Sessions and then read some of the stories, sang songs, rhymes and games from a typical Bookbug Session. The pupils were shown the types of books that would be suitable from birth to early years. All the class joined in with the activities and will be putting some of these skills into practice in a local nursery.
