Staying Safe Online – new resources

Thinkuknow is the education programme from NCA-CEOP, a UK organisation which protects children both online and offline.  Within the website there is lots of information for pupils and parents based on being safe online, dealing with any incidents, and receiving help/support.

The second resource comes from Childline and is a link to download an app called Zipit.   Zipit helps young people to respond to unwanted chats & get out of awkward/pressured circumstances online with the power of GIFs.  Further information is available at the link below.

• Patronal Feast Mass
  •  Thanks to Bishop Toal, Fr Ghislain, Fr Travers, Fr Campbell and Fr Lawrie who joined S1 and S6 students to celebrate Mass for the Feast of our Patron St Andrew on Friday.
• S4 Prelims
  • The S4 Prelims begin next week.  Students have all been issued with personalised prelim timetables and should check the SQA noticeboards for full details of exam times and venues.
• Strictly 2019
  • The annual Strictly Come Dancing event took place on Wednesday.  We thank everyone who came to support this worthy cause in aid of our Malawi Partnership which was a complete sell out again.  Thanks to all our dancers, the weeks of practice certainly paid off with the performance of their lives. Well done particularly to Euan Morell/Miss Campbell who placed 2nd & Ryan Paterson/Karen “The Dinner Lady” & Scott Minnis/Claire “The Technician” who were joint 3rd and Congratulations to our winners Kelsey Foley & Mr McSherry.
  • A final huge thanks go to the person responsible for putting the whole show together. Not just responsible for organising the event but the choreographer and support for all our “Diva Dancers”. So a special thanks to Miss Banks for putting together yet another spectacular show.
• Foodbank Appeal 
  • We will be collecting for the Coatbridge Foodbank and People’s Pantry throughout Advent.  Toiletries are in short supply (toothpaste, toothbrushes, shower gel, soap, deodorant etc) as well as tinned meat or fish, toilet roll, tea & coffee, long life milk, baby food and dog & cat food.  Students can drop off any items into the RE department.
• S2 Forensics Trip
  • S2 students enjoyed a trip to Edinburgh College to learn about forensics and the process used in scientific tests in the detection of crime.  A thoroughly enjoyable day for all involved.
• Bookweek Scotland
  • To celebrate ‘Book Week Scotland 2019’, the Library ran a competition called the ‘Scottish Quiz’. The winners were Grace Madden 1F and Laughlin Digan 2K. They each won a goody bag with a Scottish theme. Congratulations to them both.
• Staffing
  • We said farewell on Friday to Miss Power from Support for Learning on Friday.  Miss Power leaves to take up a position as Principal Teacher of Support for Learning  in Glasgow.  We wish Miss Power every success in her new role and school.

The English Department has produced a Reading for UAE Strategies help sheet for students in the senior phase, this can be a valuable tool for students to assist with studying and in the run up to prelim & SQA examinations.

Parents’ Evening Reading Strategies Nov 2019

The S4 Reporting Evening takes place this Monday the 11th of November for parents & carers from 4.00pm until 6.30pm.  All S4 students have been issued with an appointment sheet and should get appointments for all National Qualification subjects.  Any parent or carer who cannot attend but would like an update on the progress of their child should contact Principal Teachers of Pupil Support – Ms Trainer & Mrs Halavage or Year Head Ms Morrison .

• Primary 7 Transition Sports
  • The PE Department hosted the first of this years Primary Transition Sports Events for Primary 7 students from our Associated Primary Schools. A total of 208 students took part in a series of Basketball tournaments and the games were all very competitive and of a good standard.  We thank all the pupils who came up to take part & we hope they have enjoyed their first taste of sport up here at St Andrew’s High School.  Congratulations & well done to all who took part particularly those who were the winners of each of the tournaments.  A huge thank you to our Sports Captains & Sports Leaders who were responsible for the smooth running of the event. What an amazing group of students & we are incredibly proud of the standard of leadership skills they show, they are definitely a real asset to our school.  And finally a thank you to Miss Barr for all the incredible work she has put in over the last few weeks in coordinating this event and to all staff & Stephen from Active Schools for assisting on the night.
• Auschwitz visit
  • This week S6 students Kelsey Foley & Megan Gamble headed to Auschwitz in Poland to learn about the Holocaust as part of the Lessons from Auschwitz project.  A truly life changing experience for both students and we look forward to them coming home and sharing their experiences with the school at future assemblies.
• Fulton MacGregor
  • Advanced Higher Modern Studies students were visited by local MSP Fulton MacGregor.  Students were able to ask specific questions relating to their dissertation topics on criminal justice, racial equality, local & national politics.
• Sports Teams 
  • 3 of the Football teams were in action away to St Ambrose. The U13s recorded a 6-3 victory with the U14s losing out by 4 goals to 3. The U16s recorded a 5-0 victory with goals from joint MOTM Aidan Savage (2) & Liam Boyle with Devin McCarte & Adam Davidson also scoring.
  • Well done to the S6 netball team after a good win tonight against Calderhead High School. Player of the match was Orla Costello.

A copy of the S4 Prelim Timetable can be accessed below.  As well as asking teachers for their exam details S4 students should also refer to school SQA notice board for exam times and locations.

The supported study programme is up and running for students in S4 ahead of their prelim examinations in December.  There are sessions available at lunch time & after school throughout the week and we encourage as many students as possible to attend sessions on offer to help with their studying & revision.
