HT Blog – 23 October 2018

Congratulations to our WoSPEG Physics team who took part in their semi-final recently putting in an outstanding performance to reach the final on 21st November. Well done!

As mentioned previously we are looking to receive Silver accreditation as a Rights Respecting School and Mrs Woolley has been working hard with a team of staff and pupils in a programme for the year in order to achieve this. At a recent staff meeting, a group of pupils presented to staff and had them working in groups looking at and discussing some of the articles from the Conventions on the Rights of the Child. They did a fantastic job of engaging the staff and keeping them on task!

The Icon of Jesus Our Teacher, commissioned to mark the centenary of the 1918 Education Act was welcomed into the diocese recently. A short service took place in St Bartholomew’s in Coatbridge led by Archbishop Tartaglia of the Archdiocese of Glasgow and Bishop Toal and attended by pupils from across a number of schools.

We recently Fundraising had our Hospice Awareness week where our St Andrew’s Hospice Ambassadors organised a number of events – OLHS Bake off, netball, basketball, dodge ball, leg waxing,… Well done to the ambassadors and staff who put themselves through the mill in order to raise funds!

We have a number of pupils undertaking the Caritas award again this year. On 11th October, pupils from across the diocese met in the Cathedral for a Caritas Commissioning Service led by Bishop Toal. Once again, it is very heartening to see the numbers of young people who will be engaging in service in their communities.

We were recently given the opportunity to have all pupils and staff take part in World Restart a Heart Day and learn basic CPR. Many thanks to the large number of NHS staff who took the time to come along on the day and help out with this. It was a great event and who knows, someone’s life may be saved as a result.

S6 Pupils applying to University were had a session on the morning of the last day looking at courses and procedures for applying through UCAS. They will now be working on their personal statements, an important part of the application process that could potentially be the key to getting a place on their desired course. Pupils have been given the relevant deadlines and should keep to these.

The Primary transition programme is now underway and Mr Lang and I have been out visiting the Primary schools to speak with parents about that is happening throughout the year to help ease this transition for the pupils. The first P7 visit will take place this Thursday 25th October and we look forward to welcoming the pupils for the day.

Auditions are taking place for the School Show next year – ‘Back to the 80s’! Get those leg warmers and shoulder pads looked out and get along for some of those classics!

Our Christmas Fayre takes place on Wednesday 28th November from 54.30 – 8.30pm. The Personal Development class are organising this and there are a number of clubs have started to help make products for this event to raise funds for the school. Get the date in your diary and get some Christmas shopping done!
