Numeracy and Maths

In Chryston, Maths and Numeracy was on our improvement plan from  2013 – 2016. In 2019- 20  we reviewed our use of Mental Maths so that children have the opportunity to discuss their selected mental maths methods – this is referred to as a ‘Number talk’ session. As part of this improvement,  we now use three key resources to support us in teaching Numeracy and Mathematics. These resources are Number Talks, Big Maths and Heinemann Active Mathematics.

Heinemann Active Maths allows for more flexibility in the teaching and learning, as well as textbook and worksheets, it has games and more active approaches. It allows for the staff to use a range of  approaches that best suit the children in their classroom. We also use the online Real Life Problem Solving which allows the children to apply their Numeracy and Maths knowledge in real life situations. At the Early Level we have also created resources to compliment Picture books in order to teach Time through a context to make it easier for the children to understand.

Annually the school takes part in Scottish Maths week. it usually takes place towards the end of September.
