- what the S2 options process involves
- what it means for your child
- how parents and carers can support decision-making at home
What Is the S2 Options Process?
During S2, pupils begin to make choices about the subjects they will study in S3. These subjects continue the Broad General Education (BGE) and help prepare pupils for the Senior Phase, where they may go on to work towards National Qualifications.
At this stage, pupils are not expected to make final career decisions. The focus is on maintaining a broad and balanced curriculum, while allowing pupils to spend more time studying subjects they enjoy and feel motivated by.
How the Process Works
Starting this week pupils will be supported through the options process in a number of ways. This includes:
- participating in assemblies and class-based discussions
- having opportunities to speak with subject teachers and Pupil Support staff
- being given access to information about S3 subjects and pathways.
Supporting Your Child at Home
Parents and carers play an important role in supporting pupils during this process. You can help by:
- encouraging your child to choose subjects they enjoy and feel engaged in
- using their most recent “Progress” Report to help guide and inform discussions
- focusing on strengths and interests rather than specific future careers
- reassuring them that feeling unsure is normal
- encouraging your child to speak to their Pupil Support Teacher if they have questions or concerns
Starting the process
Parents/pupils can now access the S2 into S3 subject information booklet, the S2 into S3 preliminary subject availability form and the formal S2 Options Process letter using the links below:

đź”—S2 into S3 Option Letter 2067 -27
The subject availability form should be completed and returned online by Monday 26th January 2026, at the very latest.
The information gathered from this completed form helps the school plan a balanced and appropriate S3 curriculum final option form for all pupils.
Pupil Support staff and subject teachers are available throughout the options process to support pupils in making suitable and well-informed choices.
If you have any questions or would like further advice, please contact your child’s Pupil Support Teacher.
Thank you for your continued support as we work together to help pupils make confident and informed decisions about their learning.
