Braidhurst won the Lanarkshire Cup for the third consecutive time on Thursday night as they came back from behind to beat Duncanrig High School 2-1. The first half was an even contest with very few clear cut chances for either team but just as the half time whistle was about to blow, Duncanrig were awarded a penalty after Cameron Williamson handled inside the box. Goalkeeper Ryan Renwick guessed the right way but couldn’t do enough to keep the ball out, leaving Braidhurst with a one goal deficit to overcome. After the break, Cameron Stewart came close to levelling the scores with a great effort that was heading in the top corner but his shot was matched by an excellent save from the goalkeeper. With time running out, Braidhurst finally managed an equaliser. Matthew Barclay switched the ball to Cody McLeod, whose pinpoint cross found Robbie Brown free inside the box to head into the net. As Duncanrig threw players forward to get back in front, Braidhurst broke on the counter attack – excellent work from Cameron Williamson saw him beat two players and play an excellent ball through to Robbie who chipped the ball over the oncoming goalkeeper and into the net. In the end, two goals from Robbie were enough to see Braidhurst retain the Lanarkshire Cup and ensure captain Steven Rodger would be lifting the trophy for a third time. Mr Clarke and Mr O’Toole were delighted at the result and another successful season. Despite the disappointment of missing out on a place in the Scottish Cup Final after a 1-0 loss in the semi-finals last week, the U15s managed to put that aside and continue their dominance in this competition

READING CHAMPIONSHIP
Pupil Equity Funding has given us an even greater opportunity to set our own agenda and the means to pursue it. We were very clear, at the start of the session, that raising literacy rates across the Broad General Education phase of the school was one of our key priorities and promoting reading for pleasure has been central to our strategy for achieving this goal. In an age of smartphones, games consoles, social media and television on demand, the humble book is all too easily overlooked. With this in mind, the commitment our pupils have shown to their personal reading is laudable and we were keen to recognise that. The Reading Championship, led by our Librarian, Mrs. Scott, has allowed us to do this. Our aim, moving forward into session 2018-19, is to increase the number of young people who achieve this award.
Prom 2018
Celebrations were in full swing at last week’s annual senior prom with pupils and staff joining together for a night to remember. The prom is always a very stylish and glamourous affair as pupils were dressed in their finest whilst enjoying a delicious meal and lots of dancing at the disco held at Dalziel Park Hotel. The evening proved a fitting send off for those pupils either leaving Braidhurst or returning for S6. The school would like to wish pupils the very best of luck in the future and to thank the pupil prom committee and staff who helped organise another fantastic senior prom.
MALAWI PROJECT – KIER CONSTRUCTION DONATION
Kier Construction kindly donated £300 towards Braidhurst High School’s Malawi project. Malawi Ambassadors Katie Kennedy and Robbie Caldwell accepted the cheque on Friday prior to their visit on Tuesday 5th June. Kier also donated protective clothing for pupils to wear whilst working in. The group would like to thank Kier for their very generous donation and will use it towards improving the educational conditions and environment in our linked school, Missan Jo CDSS, in Malawi.
TEDx YOUTH VISIT
In celebration of Year of Young People 2018, 30 S4 pupils attended the TedXYouth Glasgow event at the SEC and Armadillo. Based on the successful TedxTalks events and YouTube channel, the TedxYouth event hosted a programme of live speakers and discussion labs to spark motivation and inspiration with young people. Hosted by David Farrell and Jennifer Reoch, our young people heard from 9 speakers including Reece Hayes from the Princes Trust, Food Medic Dr Hazel Wallace and Mollie Hughes, the youngest woman in the world to successfully summit from both the north and south sides of Mount Everest. The event was a fantastic opportunity for our young people to step out of their comfort zone, explore new ideas and discover their full potential. They left inspired and motivated for the challenges ahead as they move into the senior phase.

S1 Outdoor Classroom 2018
A highlight of the school calendar for S1 pupils is the Outdoor Classroom project, and this years was no different. On Wednesday 16th May until Friday 18th May all S1 pupils were released from their regular school timetable to take part in an inter-disciplinary project delivered by a variety of departments in the school. The theme of the project was all about problem solving skills. The pupils were given the opportunity to take part in 7 different activities across the three days, which took place both in Braidhurst High school and at Strathclyde Park. Departments who gave input at this year’s event were: Technical with Bridge Building, P.E. with Team Building, Art with a Leaf Project, French with a Toure de Parc, Maths with Orienteering, Biology with Habitat Sampling and P.E. with Watersports.
This year’s project will also go towards S1 pupils achieving The John Muir Award. One pupil reported that “they had the best time and learned a lot”. A huge congratulations to all pupils who were involved, particularly for their excellent behaviour and representation of Braidhurst High school.
