June Update

Continuing our Learning for Sustainability, we made some bird feeders to hang from the trees in our school grounds. We also turned our focus from land to issues concerning climate change in our oceans. Through our class story called ‘DRY: Diary of a Water Hero’, we learned lots about myths surrounding this precious resource and how small actions can have a big impact on conserving water.  This also provided a great opportunity in Maths where we discussed misleading data relating to climate change where we looked at how statistics can be presented to show a one sided view. We also created some fabulous seascape collages using a variety of media to create back, mid and foregrounds.

The children have had lots of fun during our Olympics Sports Day, created and hosted by our P7 classes. We have also had a great time working our way around the STEM Trail created by our STEM Ambassadors.

May Update

During May P5 has taken full advantage of the good weather by playing Rounders and Red Rover. The class has also been engaged in lots of talking and listening activities surrounding climate issues and have been learning about the benefits of renewable sources of energy. As part of our Learning for Sustainability, we also welcomed our class butterflies, recording data on their lifecycle,  learning about their anatomy and identifying all of the ways that they contribute to a healthy ecosystem.

We had a lovely afternoon releasing our adult butterflies into the wild! We also made some wonderful Mandala artwork from natural materials found in the school grounds.

April Update

In Numeracy and Maths, P5 has been learning to convert between digital and analogue time as well as the skill of reading schedules and timetables. We have also learned the cardinal and inter-cardinal compass points and used these to read maps and give directions.

During outdoor learning we discussed perspective by looking up from the base of trees into their canopies. This was the inspiration for some beautiful cherry blossom tree artwork.

In Literacy, we learned about exposition writing and created posters and leaflets in an effort to persuade readers to make small changes that will have a positive impact on climate change.

February Update

During Children’s Mental Health Week we had lots of class and group discussions about the things that matter to us and the importance of kindness. We read and watched The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse which we used as a prompt for a variety of literacy and HWB  lessons. P5 also learned how to draw a horse which was then developed into a piece of art highlighting the things that make us unique, inspired by the artwork of Charlie Mackesy.

The pupils also worked created  some excellent Cinquain poems about a thunderstorm.

September Update

P5 has been learning about 2D and 3D shape. Pupils have been identifying 2D shape within 3D objects by looking at their nets. They have been finding lines of symmetry in regular and irregular 2D shape, using mirrors to help them recognise reflective lines of symmetry.  They have also been creating symmetrical block patterns.

During Outdoor Learning, P5 took the opportunity to investigate some of the facts that we have been learning about our solar system. They used shadow outlines to demonstrate that the earth is rotating on its axis. Children drew a line where  a variety of shadows fell and then revisited them 15 minutes later to discover the shadows had moved.
