September Update:

Outdoor Learning

This term in P5/4 we have been loving exploring outdoors and investigating nature changing as we move into Autumn. We have completed nature scavenger hunts and had to get creative to create squirrels using natural materials to tick this off the list. We used the materials that we collected to make some autumnal art – some groups even made their artwork 3D!

Topic

Our topic this term was Arctic Animals. Primary 5/4 have enjoyed exploring the arctic climate and how animals adapt to this climate to keep warm and survive. We have created snowmobiles and igloos using different materials, including Lego and K-nex and made some fantastic creations!

Numeracy

We have been practicing our times tables in P5/4 and how to show these in a variety of ways. Pupils loved constructing arrays to show times tables and used lots of different materials to complete these. We are working on the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables.

 

P5.4Term2

October Update:

Topic

Primary 5/4 have completed our first topic of ‘Polar Regions’. We have loved learning facts about how animals survive in the polar regions, as well as making our own polar bears and arctic animals using different materials! Look how proud everyone is to show off their fantastic creations.

Writing

We have moved onto our new writing topic this month, focussing on descriptive writing. P5/4 have loved getting to use lots of Halloween themed adjectives to describe haunted houses and wicked witches. We even had some of our own witches in class over the last week wearing lovely witches hats to suit the theme! We have been learning to structure a descriptive and use effective adjectives.

Technology

We have enjoyed using exploring how to use the shape tool on Microsoft documents this month. We have learned how to use different shapes and how to change the size, colour and orientation of these, as well as adding text to them. We made some fantastic haunted houses with lots of different features!

November Update

Drama

This month, it was Anti-Bullying Week. In Primary 5/4 we had a class discussion about the importance of kindness and the different types of bullying. In drama, we used freeze frames and thought tracking to explore the impact of bullying and how this can effect people.

Numeracy

We moved onto the topic of fractions this month in numeracy and have enjoyed showing fractions using lots of different objects. We even took our learning outside where we used chalk to draw diagrams showing fractions then got our friends to write the fraction that we had drawn.

Writing

We have been learning all about how to write an information report this month in writing. We worked in groups to research The Colosseum and then made big posters with all the information that we found. We used this information to write some super information reports!

 

December Update

School trip

This month as part of our topic, we went to Dundonald Castle for a workshop all about the Romans. We learned about how the castle was built, who lived there and what daily life was like during the Roman times. We even got to hold some weapons and make our own Roman medicine!

Christmas concert

It has been a busy month in Primary 5/4 where we have been able to showcase our musical talents. We spent lots of time practicing our singing and signing and performed over 2 days having a ball dressed up in all of our festive outfits performing on the stage

Leadership Groups

We have also been very busy in our leadership groups this month, from our playground champions who have been testing all the new playground equipment to our library committee who have been keeping our school library nice and tidy and even creating their own book reviews. Here is a picture of Jack from the Eco Group who made his very own Christmas tree decoration out of an old book.

P5.4 Term3Curriculum Outline

January Update

Numeracy

In numeracy we have been looking at angles and directions. We have been practicing giving directions using the 4 compass points as well as with turns using angles. We used house points as treasure and set ourselves the challenge of directing each other across the Twister mat to the treasure using compass points.

Learning Across the Curriculum 

We have been learning all about Scottish traditions this month. We explored dishes served at a Burns supper and even made our own Scottish cranachan using whipped cream, raspberries, Scottish oats, honey and jam. Primary 5/4 loved whipping their own cream and most pupils gave the dessert a 10/10!

Art and Design 

Continuing the Scotland theme, we have been looking at Scottish objects and products this month to create our own artwork. We explored Scottish products such as Tunnocks teacakes, Irn Bru and tablet. Here are some of the pupils showing off their Scottish thistles made using lollipop sticks and tissue paper.

February Update

Numeracy

In Numeracy this month, we have been working so hard on our mental maths skills! We discussed the importance of having good mental maths skills and how these could be used in the real world. We have been looking at Number Talks strategies to help us.

Topic

As part of our Australia topic, we wrote a procedure for how to make fairy bread. We then followed each other’s procedures to make our own fairy bread. It was delicious!

Health and Wellbeing

In P.E this month, we have been focussing on dance. We can link movements to create our own dances. We have also been using music as a stimulus and creating movements for others to guess what we are doing. Here are Keira and Lucy dancing out their morning routine!

March Update

Outdoor Learning

As it is now Spring, we have been spending lots of time outdoors! We have worked on making our own shelters using natural materials, making our own bird feeders and enjoying our favourite books in nature. We revised our learning from this term by completing an Easter egg hunt where we had to find eggs and answer the questions inside.

Literacy – World Book Day

We completed lots of activities as part of World Book Day this month! We made our own origami bookmarks using paper folding techniques and took our books outside into the forest to share with our friends.

R.M.E – Church Visit

This month, we enjoyed a visit to Dreghorn Parish Church where we loved getting to see inside this religious building. We also learned all about the Christian story of Easter and enjoyed watching this being performed using Lego.
