September 2024 Highlights

On Wednesday 18th September, Moira Ross from the British Deaf Association (BDA) came to deliver a workshop, Deaf Roots and Pride (DRP), for our learners in partnership with their parents. They were asked for suggestions on Deaf role models they would like to meet, to help them build aspirations for their future learning, learning for work and learning for life.

The children have also been supporting staff in the school with Deaf Awareness. The children created a video entitled SHARP which stands for:
Sign to me!
Have I got technology, subtitles, visuals?
Adapt
Repeat
Pick me!
This is to remind everyone of the supports available and to ensure they are in place for our Deaf Learners. Please see the video below.

October 2024 Highlights

October has been a very busy month. We met Danii Joyce who is a Deaflympic Gold Medalist for Team GB in Swimming. She is from Ayrshire and has been in twice now to work with the children as a Deaf Role Model, sharing aspects of her own experiences of being Deaf and growing up. Danii has been inspirational for the children and their parents. She will continue to join us for sporting activities over the next couple of weeks.

Personalisation and Choice started this month with a number of options for the children to choose from including Comic Book writing, cooking & baking, drawing & creating, ICT coding, sensory, chess and multisports. The children have settled well into their choices.

Of course October brings Hallowe’en and all the fun that goes with it. 👻☠🐱‍👤🤡🤖🐱‍🐉 The children enjoyed dressing up for the afternoon and taking part in lots of Hallowe’en themed activities with their classmates. They made ghosts and Hallowe’en treats too 😋!

November 2024 Highlights
The NDCS & NATSIP Quality Standards for Resource Provisions for Deaf children and young people in mainstream schools state that Deaf children and young people should have access to a range of Deaf role models and have opportunities to learn about Deaf culture and community. Article 6 of the Rights of Deaf children states that all Deaf children have the right to learn the linguistic identity and culture of the Deaf community. Article 8 then states that all Deaf  children have the right to fluent national sign language models, including teachers in education. This is why we are delighted to welcome as many Deaf role models as we can.
Following on from Danii Joyce’s initial introduction, we have enjoyed three gym sessions of team games and we were so lucky to have a variety of family members join us for all the fun. Danii is an inspiring Deaf role model and we all enjoyed her time with us immensely. The children have shown a great interest in the Deaflympics so we have used this to develop language around sports, countries and flags.
We then had Moira in from the BDA and she brought along Craig McCulloch, who is an actor with Solar Bear Theatre (Please see the link below). Craig is another super Deaf role model for the children. He spent time telling us all about himself and his career before playing some circle games and working on a little drama together. The children engaged very well with Craig, asking lots of questions and telling him about themselves.
We are very grateful to all our Deaf role models for donating their time because they have such a positive impact on the children and their aspirations for the future.

December 2024 Highlights
Festive signing both in school and at home was great fun – fantastic effort from our families, helping the children across the school learn Christmas signs.
We had a trip to the King’s Theatre in Glasgow to enjoy a signed performance of their pantomime Peter Pan, it was very funny!
We sent a message to Tasha on Strictly Come Dancing, to wish her luck for the final – what an inspirational Deaf role model.

January 2025 Highlights

January was a very busy month, full of firsts. Ewan from SportsAbility organised Dance input for 6 weeks from Tracy Finlay @ DanceDepot. The ribbons and scarves were the best and we learned our own dance routine, with pom poms! Ewan also organised 6 weeks of Karate from Senjokai Karate and Sensei Annette. We learned lots about the purpose of Karate and understand that one of the main features is respect. Respect for ourselves, others, home, school and the Dojo (we learned a few Japanese terms along the way). The primary seven pupils finished the month off with their residential trip to Inverclyde Sports Facility in Largs, the first time the school has been there. The trip was a great success, with our two P7 pupils trying new activities and having fun. Finally we were learning the story of Little Red Riding Hood and explored it through storytelling, drama, K’Nex construction and Scratch coding.

February 2025 Highlights

We enjoyed our term 3 workshop from the British Deaf Association. We chose a dancer as our Deaf role model so Moira brought along Jia, a professional dancer who if Deaf. Jia was a fantastic treat for the children, so enthusiastic and full of fun. He told us a little about his life and career and then did some great dancing like YMCA and Staying Alive.

We also had a visit from Lisa and Iain from the West of Scotland Deaf Children’s Society, who came to present their Frances Dolan Endeavour Award. We are so proud to say it was awarded to one of our girls, for inspiring others across the school and being passionate about the rights of Deaf children. She has also completed several Kilt Walks with her family to raise funds for WSDCS.

A huge well done and congratulations!

March 2025 Highlights

In March, three of our pupils visited the University of the West of Scotland to deliver a lecture to first year teaching students. The girls shared their own experiences and ideas about how they could be supported in the classroom.  The students got the opportunity to hear through personal listening technology.  The children also taught the students some British Sign Language.

As part of British Sign Language week, the after school club signing choir performed Katy Perry’s “Roar” at the assembly.  Our Deaf role model, Kat and our Deaf learners presented playground signs to help communication and inclusion, as part of pupil voice at the assembly.

Our Deaf learners were all excited to be involved in preparations for the Elderbank is 10 performance.  We enjoyed singing, dancing, compering, signing and drama.
