Tomorrow as you know is CHILDREN IN NEED. In Lochardil we will be supporting the charity this year through ‘Wear it spotty!’

If you want to support the charity:

Let’s get global…

This term, as we mentioned at the beginning we are focussing on the Expressive Arts this term. We will be developing our skills in Art, Drama, Music and Dance through Rock Challenge.

NEWS JUST IN: We have chosen our theme

Our theme for this year’s Rock Challenge is going to be Global Warming. Following on naturally from our Weather and Climate Change topic, pupils were inspired by the 1 degree to 6 degrees clips we studied.

Here are the questions we aim to answer through our topic:

How can we make costumes and scenery using limited resources?

How can we create a performance with an underlying message?

What dance and movement talents do we have as a class?

What could be the devastating consequences of Global Warming?

How are we going to show our message in such a short time period?

How can we ensure that everyone feels included in the performance?

We will continue to update you with our progress. Fortunately with our excellent Enterprise efforts, we are able to pay our entry fee, so this is a massive weight lifted!

We all make choices…

Following on with our theme of ‘choices’ which is permeating through the work this term, yesterday we had a visit from Colin Carmichael from Scripture Union (SU) in assembly.

He showed us how we make simple choices every day which have an effect on our lives.

Ewan was brave enough to be his volunteer. His simple choice was to choose the top, middle or bottom box. He was told that one box was empty, one contained prizes, and the final box contained something which was a little YEUGH…

Unfortunately for Ewan he received the box with COLD baked beans and a spoon. The pictures tell the rest of the story!

     

Thank you to Colin for his visit, and well done to Ewan for being an excellent sport!

Pupil of the Month: October

Here are October’s: Pupil of the Month winners for P6/7. This month it was chosen by the P6/7 teachers.

 

Angel– Angel was a fantastic nail model for our Nails N’ Nibbles and demonstrated the fantastic enterprise work that P6/7 are capable of. 3 cheers from your teachers Angel! 

Charlie– Charlie succeeded as his role within the finance group by ensuring that all the fine details were organised. He put 100% effort into ensuring that we made the most profit from the disco. Well done Charlie- your teachers are proud! 

Catherine– Catherine takes on all leadership duties responsibly, aiming for the highest standard on each task. She put maximum effort into the Flashdance routine at the Hallowe’en disco- a brilliant role model for others. Fantastic work Catherine! 

Well done from everyone in P6/7!

Our cultural week is over…

What a fantastic afternoon we had at ‘The Magic Flute today’. Mrs MacLeod will be practising over the weekend- ready to belt out the Queen’s solo.

Morven and James put out a letter yesterday to ask if anyone could assist with the Book Fair. They are looking for parent/carer helpers 14:30-15:30 on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Monday. REMINDERS: Tomorrow Friday 9th November 2012
– Scottish Opera @ 11.30am. You will need a packed lunch, a warm jacket and suitable shoes for walking to and from Eden Court.
-There is NO swimming this week. It will resume next week.

Well done on all your dancing efforts. We’re definitely seeing an improvement with your co-ordination skills. This will be a real benefit when we perform for Rock Challenge.

A group begun working with Mrs.Prentice today on a storyline. We will share this with the whole class on Monday afternoon.

This afternoon we took part in ‘Choices for Life’. This was an interactive event which P6/7 classes took part in across Scotland.

We learned about three important themes:
– Peer pressure
– Smoking
– Alcohol

Yesterday, we went to see Brave, and tomorrow, we’re writing the review! In Writer’s Craft today we looked at how an effective reviewer engages the audience with WOW vocabulary.

HOMEWORK TONIGHT: Write your opening sentence of your review. This must GRASP the reader instantly. An example of what we DON’T want to see:

Tonight, many people around the UK will be celebrating Bonfire Night at either an arranged bonfire, or at home with smaller fireworks.

We were shown by Welephant and Spikey how to keep safe with fireworks using The Firework Code. Click below to see the story of Welephant and Spikey:

In assembly, we heard that the choices we can make with fireworks can have an impact on our future. Mr Cook shared a story about his friend who was injured badly with a rocket as a teenager. An NHS clip showed us how to stay safe with fireworks. The following link includes the clip, and some information on what can happen if we are not careful.

Our Heroes

Today we were given out or language homework task for November.

Since we created such FANTASTIC biographies last term within writing, we thought we should put these to good use. What better way than to create a book of P6/7 heroes?

Your task: Create the finished draft of ‘My Hero’ in booklet form including information and images.

You have been given:
– an 8 page blank book (including front and back covers)
– an information sheet
– a plastic wallet

We want you to ‘re-draft’ your biography into booklet form. You can use the work that you’ve done already, as well as adding in any extra information. Please have an adult check over any spellings…

You can handwrite (neatest handwriting) or type your text and stick it into your booklet. Your front cover MUST include a picture of your hero, and there should be images inside either drawn, photographs, or from the computer.

You have until Monday 3rd December to complete the task. Remember use your time wisely. We will be awarding prizes on content and presentation.

Nails N’ Nibbles

REMINDER: PE KIT FOR TOMORROW

Thank you to ALL of the pupils that came to support Nibbles N’ Nails today. This had a real positive impact on the enterprising efforts of P6/7 pupils.

     

We now have a final total of £506.53 profit. This is an excellent achievement. We will be able to make our donation payment to the Rock Challenge charity foundation, and hopefully get a few props and costumes with the left over £16.53.

If you are out Trick or Treating tonight, remember to STOP-LOOK and LISTEN at all roads!

Hallowe’en Flashdance…

In P6/7 tradition, for the second year in a row we created a Hallowe’en Flashdance. At each of the discos, we performed our flashdance to ‘Smooth Criminal’ by Michael Jackson. This is something that always gets the crowd going!

Hallowe’en antics…

A MASSIVE WELL DONE TO ALL P6/7 who held a fantastic night of fun for the school. The Hallowe’en disco was a massive success. The DJs were devilish, the gamers were ghoulish, and the tricks and treats just completed the night.

We were able to raise £420.10 profit after taking off our expenditure. This is a FANTASTIC amount. We want to thank the WHOLE school for helping with this.

Thank you to our parent/carer helpers- without you, we wouldn’t have had such a success!

TOMORROW: Wednesday 31st October is Nails N’ Nibbles
We will have our NAILS N’ NIBBLES stall open in the P6/7 classroom at break and at lunch. For 50p your nails can get become Hallowe’en-ified, and you can get a Hallowe’en snack. If you have 50p in change- it would be appreciated.

Disco Fever…

All of our hard work has finally paid off- the time has come for the Hallowe’en Disco!

P6/7 pupils should arrive at school at 5.30pm to setup, and be picked up at 9.30pm after we have tidied up.

Remember: You can bring £1 to play the games this evening…

Mr Cook is very much looking forward to getting back to school on Monday, and hopes you had a fantastic first week back.

Excited to see your weather reports, as I was upset that I missed this last week.

I have been very busy learning about what teachers do all over the country. They were extremely impressed with our blog, and the amount of information that we share with parents/carers.

I’m glad everyone had such a fantastic holiday, and I’m looking forward to the disco on Monday.

It is time to ROCK this CHALLENGE

HALLOWEEN DISCO REMINDER:
P6/7 pupils to be at school for 5.30pm to help set up and until 9.30pm to help tidy up. Any Parent/Carer helpers who can assist will be appreciated.

Over the past two days we’ve been starting to think about what our theme is going to be for our Rock Challenge performance. Mr Cook has set us the task of having a theme by the time he is back on Monday.

One idea is to take a traditional story, and turn this into a piece of movement using a given theme. For example, in the finals last year, the team from Fraserburgh Academy used The Wizard of Oz to show that people in life are torn between the choices that they make.

It’s time for ROCK CHALLENGE

This term we are beginning our second topic which aims to encompass both MADD- Music, Art, Drama and Dance as well as HWB- Health and Wellbeing .

We are using the theme of ROCK CHALLENGE to deliver our topic.

Rock Challenge and the Be Your Best Foundation is a charity which aims to educate children and young people that the choices we make in life from a young age, influence our future.

The final aim of the topic is to perform on Eden Court stage in February to convey a message. We have 8 minutes to impress the audience and the judges but there is one catch-

WE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO TALK.

We have to create a piece of movement to music to convey a message. Watch last year’s Rock Challenge by clicking the link below. We are hoping to raise enough money from our Hallowe’en disco to pay our entry fee, however we may need to fundraise further.

P6/7 class aim is: 70 SHOE BOXES

This year we aim to support Blythswood in their annual Shoe Box Appeal. Blythswood are aiming to get 150,000 shoe boxes this year.

YOU CAN HELP!

Last term everyone received a leaflet about the Shoe Box Appeal. If you would like to support the charity, and make someone SMILE this Christmas your task is to:

  • Decorate a shoe box

  • Choose whether you want to support a man, woman, boy or girl

  • Fill your shoe box with useful items such as hat, gloves, scarf, toothpaste and toothbrush

  • You may want to include a treat- e.g Sweeties (REMEMBER NO CHOCOLATE)

ALL COMPLETED SHOE BOXES SHOULD BE RETURNED BY NOVEMBER 2nd 2012 to your teacher.

Mr Cook is not in school this week as he is in Spain at the European Leadership Initiative with teachers from all around Europe. We look forward to hearing how he got on when he is back on Monday.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

WE MADE IT! P6/7 have successfully completed TERM 1. What a fantastic term it has been. We are now settled into our BEAUTIFUL accommodation, and everything is running smoothly.

We’ve made progress with our topic ‘Weather and Climate Change’, and we’ve learned about Number, Place Value, and 2D Shape in Maths. As well as this we’ve read some fantastic books, and created some superb diary entries, bibliographies and newspapers.

But WHAT NEXT?

  • The Hallowe’en Disco on Monday 29th October 2012
  • BRAVE at Eden Court on Monday 5th November 2012
  • SCOTTISH OPERA at Eden Court Friday 9th November 2012
  • Specialist Group B- Swimming on a Friday afternoon

We’ll also be carrying on with our ‘Weather and Climate Change’ topic, as well as beginning our ‘Rock Challenge’ topic.

One of the reasons which road accidents are increasing within the teenage years is due to listening to music whilst crossing the road. If you have your headphones in, are you going to hear a car coming around the corner? NO!

This week we are supporting: WALK TO SCHOOL week, but in P6/7- we are also making it ROAD SAFETY WEEK.

Hockey Success

This term, a group of P6/7 have been going to Hockey Club after school with Mrs Campbell on a Tuesday.

On Saturday they played their first tournament- and didn’t they play well!

The Tigers fought hard but were up against some stiff competition. The Cougars played exceptionally well- winning 2 games and drawing in 2 games in the first round which put them first in their section, and qualified them to play in the play offs for the cup. They won 1 game and lost 1 game which made them 2nd overall in the whole competition. The team got the runner up medals which is an excellent achievement.

This is an excellent result for their first tournament! Keep up the good work whilst representing Lochardil!

Walk to School Week

REMINDERS:

  • Think of 3 ADJECTIVES to describe ‘My Hero’ and bring these in for writing tomorrow.

This week is Walk to School Week. Today we got a leaflet, bookmark and sticker from the JRSO reminding us of the importance to WALK TO SCHOOL.

This links in with our topic on ‘Weather and Climate Change’ as we’re trying to think of ways to reduce our Carbon Footprint and Global Warming.

Why not try one of these ways of getting to school this week, INSTEAD of the car?:

  • Walking
  • Cycling
  • Skateboarding
  • Scooting

You do however have to make sure you are being SAFE whilst using these travel methods. In the darker nights, we need to make sure that we: ‘BE SAFE- BE SEEN’. We should:

  • Wear bright, fluorescent clothing.
  • Have lights/reflectors on our bikes.
  • Wear helmets and protective clothing when going on our bikes, skateboards and scooters.
  • LOOK LEFT- RIGHT and LEFT AGAIN when crossing the road.
