Our visit to Edinburgh Book Festival

On Friday 23rd August, Miss Lawrie took the Junior Book Club to the Edinburgh Book Festival to see MUHAMMAD KHAN & TOM POLLOCK: VIRTUAL REALITIES. Authors of two gripping and powerful new novels, they were taking a look at the world of internet-based relationships, rapturous online fandoms and cyber bullying. In Book Club we read I am Thunder, Khan’s first novel and really enjoyed it. Having listened to him talk about his new book, Kick the Moon, we would really like to read this with the Book Club too!

Some thoughts from Book Club Members about our trip to the capital:

– Mia F: I really enjoyed Khan’s talk: I found it amazing how he wrote I am Thunder in just two weeks! Seeing him in the flesh really emphasised how much we like him as an author and a person generally. What a lovely human! I would definitely like to read Kick the Moon next in Book Club!

Zeynep – I loved listening to the authors and hearing their responses to audience questions.

Kirsty – I am just so glad that we were lucky enough and able to do this today! I didn’t want to leave! Having the chance to explore Edinburgh (The Festival at Charlotte Square Gardens, Princes Street Gardens) too in the sunshine was brilliant. Not one part I didn’t like!

Kaela – I really liked today, particularly hearing how the authors connect with their characters and where their inspiration comes from. It was great to see the huge bookshop and treat myself to a new book! Extra bonus was getting my book signed!

Lila – I absolutely LOVED Mohammed Khan! Obviously I enjoy being able to find a new book and the opportunity to carefully choose one from such a huge variety was amazing. It was great to be around so many people who are enjoying reading!! It also proves that reading can take you places and teach you so many things, as well as create a sense of community. Such a great atmosphere – thank you.

Clara – I loved that we could go to an event which was all about books and had so much excitement around writing and reading. Also loved going to the gardens afterwards to read in a relaxed atmosphere!

Mia D – I just loved today’s positive energy and reading being celebrated. It reminded me that no matter what you’re interested in, you can still get into a good book and find something for you! There is something for everyone!

Overall, we had a fantastic day filled with laughter and sunshine. What a treat to spend a Friday celebrating all things reading-related!
