Drop Everything and Read

The idea:
Drop Everything and Read was created in the US to celebrate children’s book author Beverly Cleary.  After discussing with a primary school teacher and reading about how DEAR is celebrated around the world; we couldn’t contain our enthusiasm to implement it at HHS!

What happens?
A specific date is planned in which all pupils and staff are reminded to bring in their favourite book or a book they are currently reading. The exact timing of D.E.A.R is a secret to build up excitement and suspense throughout the day. Then, the announcement will instruct  EVERYONE to stop what they’re doing and READ!  Whether you’re in the middle of 30 push-ups in P.E or playing one of Beethoven’s Symphonies in music, you’ll stop and spend some time reading for pleasure. Book boxes are also provided for departments that may not have class libraries or in case anyone forgets a book. D.E.A.R staff and pupils from Photography Wider Achievement will then come around to catch everyone reading around the school!

Why?

With the hustle and bustle of the school day, we often don’t stop to relax and be mindful. We also tend to associate reading with certain subjects and assessments. We want to change that! We want to celebrate the wonderful world of reading and include everyone in the school to take some time and enjoy reading. Now, HHS teachers are showing what they’re currently reading outside their classrooms sparking conversation between pupils and staff about book recommendations!

When is it?
Our pilot for D.E.A.R was during Health Week on June 12th 2018 in combination with mindfulness day. It was amazing to see everyone anticipating the big announcement with books in hand! Even staff without classes sat in their rooms engrossed in their favourite novels! We aim to host D.E.A.R throughout the school year and will always inform staff and pupils of the date so they’re ready with their books! The exact time will always remain a mystery…..! Happy reading!!
