The first book we read was The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas, which is a young adult fiction novel focusing on the experiences of a young, black girl named Starr in contemporary America.
We then read the wildly popular 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher which recently gained popularity after there was a Netflix show made about it; although this had received great criticism and media attention for apparently romanticising suicide. Our Book Club did not overly enjoy this novel, as we found it quite slow to gather momentum in terms of plot, and found the characters difficult to empathise with and understand. As a result, some members of the club did not manage to finish this book – and so we have decided not to write a review.
The third book – we are currently reading – is Who Runs The World? by Virginia Bergin which is a dystopian futuristic novel detailing the consequences of a world where all of the men have been wiped out by a brutal virus. It is weird and wonderful, and members of the Book Club are currently enjoying it immensely. There will be a review in the next blog post to describe our collective thoughts upon finishing the novel!
