Scots Language Week – P3a

Last week we celebrated Scots Language week, the children took part in a wide range of learning experiences which celebrated the Scottish language.

As a class we read ‘Neeps and Tatties’ a wonderful book written by Carey Morning and Anna York. The children discussed all of the different Scots words from the text we translated these and discussed their meanings. The class then created their own tartans to display our new learned Scots vocabulary. What a bonnie display they have made.

As a class we discussed the meaning behind the text and used our after reading skills to summarise the story. The children then took on the role of illustrators and designed and created their own front cover for the book.

Finally we ended the week learning about traditional Waulking Songs. The children used their imagination to simulate waulking (working) the fabric as they sang the tradition Gaelic song ‘Hè Mo Leannan’.

Scottish week in P4a

As part of Scottish week in P4a we were reading Neeps and Tatties by Carey Morning.
We worked together to translate Scots words from the book into English. We also built Scottish landmarks in the playroom, created our own versions of Scottish comics, played body percussion to keep the beat to some Scottish music and used Charles Rennie Mackintosh as some inspiration for art.

P5b Science Centre Trip

This week we visited the Science centre to start off our new space topic. We had an amazing time and really enjoyed the hand on exhibits. A definite highlight was a visit to the planetarium where we were given lots of interesting information, got to see what earth looks like from space and looked at the different star constellations.

The last week in January

This has been a very productive week in P5a. The visit to the Science Centre was certainly a highlight for us all. Your child had fun and learned in an active environment. We will now build on the experiences and knowledge that we gained from the visit. Our Space topic can now develop to discover more about our Solar System.
As we are learning about angles and compass points we ventured outside for the Maths lessons! It was cold but much more fun than sitting inside for this particular topic.

P6a Scots Language week

P6a have been exploring the Scots language this week. We enjoyed listening to the Scots story ‘Neeps and Tatties’ which led to great discussions about friendships and diversity. We used this book to explore some of the Scots language and worked together to work out what some of the words meant.
This week we also looked at some Scottish poetry, but first we had to try and translate the Scottish slang into English! The children each chose a Scottish poem and worked very hard with their partners to learn these for their recital this week! What Superstars speaking Scot’s!

January 2024

P5a have settled back into the routines of school. We are learning to write a brochure to persuade  people to take a holiday in Scotland as part of our literacy and topic work this term. So far P5 have each made a plan.                                                                    In number we are rounding numbers to 10,100 or 10000. This week P5 an are starting to learn more about time durations. In the next few days we will venture outside to measure angles! Let’s hope the weather improves.                                                Generally the children have enjoyed finding out about our first IDL topic , Scotland. We will continue to explore this topic and learn more about our Scottish culture.

Weekly round up – P3a

This week we have been working very hard in all areas of our learning. The children were building their phonological awareness of the ‘wa’ sound using Elkonin boxes, games on the iPads, and active spelling strategies.

The whole class worked so hard in both numeracy and maths this week. We had a 2D shape treasure hut to solidify our learning, and we explored multiplication by creating equal groups and using repeated addition, we loved spotting the links between the different strategies.

In our literacy lessons we read Chapter 2 of Flat Stanley together, the children then answered reading comprehension questions about the chapter using an interactive quiz on the iPads. They loved being able to see the live scoreboard.
