Short and busy week for P6B

Our reading skills were a big focus this week as we returned to creating reading journals on the iPads using Keynote and Book Creator. We worked hard to present our ideas clearly and creatively while developing our understanding of the texts we were reading. We also completed reading assessments and practised comprehension questions to strengthen our understanding and reading strategies.

In maths, we began exploring different aspects of measure, focusing on kilometres. We estimated distances to places in our local area and beyond by using maps on the iPads, helping us connect maths to real-life situations. Later in the week, we learned how to convert kilometres to metres and metres to kilometres, improving our confidence with measurement and conversions.

We continued developing our persuasive writing skills by writing a letter to Miss Davidson to persuade her to move us into the bigger classrooms. We focused on using strong arguments, persuasive language, and clear explanations to support our opinions.

As part of our Commonwealth Games learning, we designed and created our own Commonwealth medals. We carefully cut shapes from cardboard, painted them the correct colours, designed the details, and attached ribbons. This activity helped us develop creativity, problem-solving, and practical design skills.

We also enjoyed spending some of our class money on rewards, recognising the hard work, positive behaviour, and teamwork shown throughout the week.

Our Weekly Class Blog

This week has been full of exciting learning opportunities, teamwork, and creativity as we continued to challenge ourselves across different subjects. Here are some of the highlights and key learning points from our activities:

We stayed active in PE by playing rounders and continuing our Commonwealth Games practice. We took part in javelin, shot put, and hurdles, helping us develop coordination, balance, strength, and teamwork skills.

Our reading skills were a big focus this week. We began creating a new reading journal in our jotters using before reading strategies to help us make predictions and prepare for our texts. As the week continued, we used during reading strategies to think more deeply about what we were reading and finished with after reading strategies to reflect on and summarise our learning.

In maths, we began learning about speed, distance, and time. We practiced using formulas and solving problems to help us understand how these measurements are connected in real-life situations.

We also developed our persuasive writing skills by writing a piece to persuade Mr Milligan to let us choose where we sit in class. This helped us use strong arguments, persuasive language, and clear explanations to support our opinions.

As part of our Commonwealth learning, we researched the properties of athletes’ shoes used in different sports. We explored how design features can improve performance and safety. We then designed our own athletes’ shoes, thinking carefully about the key characteristics needed for a chosen sport. At the end of the week, we presented our finished designs and explained why they would be effective.

We also continued working on reading comprehension through our reading groups, answering questions to improve our understanding and thinking skills.

To finish the week, we completed our spelling test and reflected on all the hard work and creativity we had shown throughout the week.

A week in P6b

This week has been full of energy, creativity, and great teamwork as we continued to build on our learning across different subjects. Here are some of the highlights and key learning points from our activities:

We stayed active in PE by playing rounders and beginning our own Commonwealth Games practice. We took part in sprint races and relay races, helping us build speed, teamwork, and cooperation.

We continued developing our research skills by building on our Commonwealth project. We explored different countries, drew their flags, and researched athletes from those countries. We then created presentations and shared them with the class, helping us grow in confidence when presenting.

Our reading skills were a focus again this week. We started a new reading journal, aiming to improve both the quality of our responses and our presentation. We also worked on comprehension questions using our reading books to strengthen our understanding.

In writing, we practised persuasive techniques by creating a piece to convince our teacher to give us extra break and lunchtime. This helped us use strong arguments and expressive language.

In STEM, we explored shape drawings and learned how to use Keynote more effectively, helping us improve our digital and design skills.

We also worked together to create a new class charter, thinking about how we want our classroom to feel and how we should treat each other. We shared our ideas through our “How Good Is Our School?” floorbook, making sure everyone’s voice was heard. Our committees also returned, giving us responsibility and opportunities to contribute to our school community.

In maths, we worked on a range of number skills. We learned how to convert decimal numbers into fractions and explored negative numbers, including how to add and subtract them. These lessons helped us strengthen our understanding of number systems and problem-solving.

We also focused on our reading skills. During our novel study, we explored new vocabulary and used it in context. We practised reading comprehension using our own books, helping us improve our understanding and thinking skills.

In STEM, we presented our learning using Keynote, sharing what we have been working on over the past few weeks. We also enjoyed a special STEM afternoon with parents, where we planned a space mission and learned about gravity and orbits. We continued working on our space presentations, developing our research and presentation skills.

We explored creativity through Art Hub on the iPad, using digital tools to develop our artistic skills.

In PATHS, we learned about dealing with teasing and how to respond in a calm and respectful way, supporting our emotional wellbeing and relationships with others.

We enjoyed rewards for our hard work, including time on the pitch playing with the new football goals and using our class money system. These rewards recognised our positive behaviour and effort.

We also had some special experiences this week. We attended an interfaith roadshow, where we learned about different beliefs and cultures, and an assembly focused on rights and World Water Day, helping us understand global issues and the importance of fairness and responsibility.
