Primary 5b Wallacewell Primary

It has been lovely welcoming the children back after their mid-term break. They have returned eager to learn, and it has already been a busy week in Primary 5b!

In numeracy, we have been learning about compass directions and reinforcing our division skills. We have also enjoyed games to develop our mental agility and improve our recall of times tables.

In literacy, we have been using our reading books to practise reading with fluency and expression, as well as answering questions to develop our understanding of the text.

We have introduced our exciting new topic, Planet Earth, with a particular focus on natural disasters. We look forward to exploring these powerful events and how they affect our world.

Our creativity has also been on show as we became filmmakers! The children made their own plasticine characters and brought them to life through stop-motion animation.

There is always plenty happening in Primary 5b!

Primary 5 have had a busy week of learning!

In maths, we have been developing our understanding of division and fractions. We also completed a times tables speed test to help build our recall and confidence. Please keep practising times tables at home, as knowing these facts helps with both division and fractions.

In literacy, we wrote book reviews of The Angel of Nitshill Road, sharing our opinions about the story and its characters and explaining whether we would recommend it to others.

In STEM, we finished building our models and tested their ability to float or move. We have also been exploring stop motion animation, bringing our ideas to life through small movements and a series of photographs.

We wish all our families a happy October mid-term break. Enjoy the holidays, have a lovely rest, and we look forward to seeing everyone back afterwards!

We have had another busy week in Primary 5, with lots of learning and opportunities to revisit and develop our skills across the curriculum.

In Maths, we have been revising addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions. This has given us an opportunity to identify the areas we feel confident in and those that still need a little more practice. We have shown a good understanding of addition and subtraction. Our next step is to continue developing our multiplication and division skills, particularly improving our recall of multiplication facts and using these confidently when solving problems and fractions of numbers.

In Literacy, we wrote a recount of our holiday weekend. We focused on putting events in chronological order, including relevant details and using the correct tools for writing.

We have also continued reading our class novel, The Angel of Nitshill Road. As we approach the end of the story, we used what we know about the characters and events so far to predict how the novel might end. There were lots of interesting ideas and discussions as we explained the reasons behind our predictions. We are looking forward to finding out how accurate they are!

Our Roman topic took us to the Colosseum in ancient Rome. We explored what the Colosseum was, why it was built and the different events that took place there. We discovered that it was a huge amphitheatre used for public entertainment, including gladiator contests and other spectacles.

In RME, we have been learning about important Jewish festivals and celebrations. We explored Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, and learned about some of the traditions associated with this special time. We also learned about Yom Kippur, a time for reflection and forgiveness, and Sukkot, when Jewish families remember the journey of their ancestors and may build and decorate a sukkah.

It has been another productive week in Primary 5, and we are looking forward to continuing our learning and building on our skills!

P5b Term 1 Curriculum Newsletter

Welcome to Primary 5!

What a fantastic start to Primary 5! The children have all settled in extremely well and are becoming familiar with the new routines, structure and challenges of life in Primary 5. We are very proud of the positive attitude they have shown towards their learning.

Numeracy

In numeracy, we have been revising place value, addition and subtraction with larger numbers and are beginning to explore multiplication. The children have been developing their understanding of the value of each digit and using different strategies to solve calculations accurately.

Literacy

We have started reading our class novel, The Angel of Nitshill Road by Anne Fine. The story has already prompted lots of interesting discussions about conflict, resolving disagreements and the importance of supporting others.

We have linked this learning to Health and Wellbeing by exploring what makes a good friend. The children enjoyed discussing the different characters in the novel and deciding whether they would choose to be friends with them, giving reasons for their opinions.

The Romans

Our topic this term is The Romans, and the children have engaged enthusiastically with their learning. So far, we have explored the Roman army, including what Roman soldiers wore and the equipment they used. The children then used collage techniques to create their own Roman soldiers for our classroom display.

We have also been learning about Roman gods and goddesses, which has generated lots of curiosity and interesting questions!

Art

In art, we have begun exploring different artists and their distinctive styles. We studied the work of Piet Mondrian and looked closely at his use of primary colours, straight lines, squares and rectangles.

Inspired by his work, the children designed their own backpacks and shoes in the style of Mondrian. The finished artwork looks fantastic and has brought lots of colour to our classroom!

We have also been learning about the artist Vincent van Gogh and have created our own artwork inspired by his distinctive style. The Starry Night and Sunflowers were particular favourites. The children were able to explain what they liked and appreciated about these famous works of art.

STEM

In STEM, we are looking at journeys and how things move. We have been building boats that float, cars that roll and green screen news reports.

Reading Reminder

To support learning in school, please remember that reading books should be brought to school every day. This allows children to access their books whenever they are needed during literacy activities.

We have had a busy and exciting start to Primary 5 and look forward to sharing more of our learning and achievements with you throughout the term!

It is almost the end of our Primary 5 adventure. It has been a very fast year and we have made so much progress in our learning. We can’t quite believe we are almost in Primary 6!

This year, we have had many highlights that we all enjoy remembering and speaking about. Such as….

• Our diversity showcase
• The library trip
• The Science Centre trip
• The pantomime
• Sports Day
• Our visit from the Ice-Cream van

We have felt so proud of ourselves in terms of our learning. Some of us feel like we have really improved our numeracy and maths skills especially when using our strategies like the algorithm. We also feel like we developed a lot of confidence and knowledge with fractions. Some of us also feel like we have tried very hard with our spelling strategies this year. Finally, many of us in the class feel like we have really improved our reading and use of reading strategies!
Overall, we feel like we have done FANTASTIC this year and have had such an enjoyable and successful year. We feel like Primary 5 has been so much fun and an amazing experience and we have worked had to achieve our goals.

Personally, I am very grateful for having the opportunity to work with all of these amazing children this year and getting to know each and every one of the families. I have had a great year teaching Primary 5 and I am thankful for the effort the children have put in this year. Well done everyone!

We only have 8 days of school left and can’t wait to make the most of them and enjoy the final couple of weeks as P5b!

We have had a really busy week with our writing assessment and spelling assessment. Everyone tried really hard to add detail in their writing and do their best to succeed. Our spelling tests went really well and many of us improved our results from before.

In gym, we have been developing our fitness skills. We used the parachute this week to get our heart rate up and we were all very tired after the games. We worked as a team to gain points and try to win some of the games.

We have been exploring measure and measuring our heights and items in the classroom. We also created some shapes using the squares in our jotters and enjoyed calculating the area and perimeter of them, this was tricky especially when we tried to do it for our names!

We have a lot of learning still to do in P5 and are working very hard to get as prepared for P6 as we can!

We revised our division this week and many of us enjoyed working on these strategies. Some of us felt like we couldn’t remember how to do it but after our practising we built confidence and noticed how much we had progressed.

Some of us have enjoyed our response writing. We like watching the different clips and responding to them including emotions, thoughts, feelings and opinions.

We had some very important visitors this week and loved showing off our learning. It was good to be able to show our strategies and let people see how much progress we have made.

HAPPY WEEKEND!

For most of us, we looked forward to the disco the most. We enjoyed spending time with our friends, playing the games and dancing. We took part in a Conga line and went all the way outside into the playground.

We continued our response writing block this week and expanded our paragraphs to include our thoughts, feelings and opinions. Most of us liked the clip we used and thought the kindness was cute.

We used our problem solving skills to find the missing values for expressions and equations. At first, some of us found this tricky but when we got started we all done very well and helped each other. We completed a numeracy assessment this week and most of us felt proud of how confident we felt during it.

A highlight of our week has been the drama lessons linked to PATHS for health and wellbeing. We all requested drama to be involved and enjoyed working in our small groups to invent different scenarios.

As part of our maths lesson, we took advantage of the sunshine and created some symmetrical patterns outside. This allowed us to be creative with our patterns and we used the mirrors to find different lines of symmetry.

Some of us enjoyed the Athletics and Fitness stations again, practising a variety of different skills and challenging ourself to make improvements from last week.

We have began to explore response writing and used different short movie clips as a hook. We had to choose different parts of the clips and explain thoughts, feelings and opinions. We all had a different favourite clip that we liked reviewing.
