Maths: Symmetry
We have moved into geometry this week, specifically focusing on reflective symmetry. The students are learning to identify lines of symmetry in 2D shapes and are practicing drawing the “mirror image” of complex patterns. This requires them to count grid squares accurately to ensure the distance from the line of symmetry is identical on both sides.
Literacy: Grammar and Writing
-
Suffixes: Our focus is on the suffix -ful. Beyond just spelling, we are analyzing how it functions to turn nouns or verbs into adjectives (e.g., power to powerful, care to careful). We are discussing how this suffix indicates that something is “full of” or “characterised by” the root word.
-
Persuasive Writing: We are beginning our unit on persuasive techniques. The goal is to move beyond simple opinion statements and into structured argument. We are specifically looking at:
-
Emotive Language: Using words that trigger a strong reaction
-
The Rule of Three: Grouping three adjectives or phrases to make a point more memorable.
-
Rhetorical Questions: Engaging the reader by asking questions that don’t necessarily require an answer.
-
Topic: The Commonwealth Fact Files
Each student has been assigned a member nation of the Commonwealth. The current task is to research and create a structured fact file. This requires them to filter information into specific categories:
-
Geography: Capital city, location, and climate.
-
Culture: National symbols, languages spoken, and traditional customs.
-
Contribution: How that nation participates in the Commonwealth and its role in the global community.

This Week in P6A!
What a brilliant week it has been in Primary 6A! Here’s a little snapshot of what the children have been working on:
🔢 Maths: Breaking Down Barriers with the Grid Method
We have been tackling multiplication using the grid method. It’s been great to see the children gain confidence in breaking down larger numbers into their place values. By visually mapping out the multiplication, they are really beginning to master the “why” behind their calculations, not just the “how.” It’s a huge step forward in their numeracy journey!
✍️ Literacy: The Power of Suffixes
In literacy, we’ve been exploring how a few letters at the end of a word can completely change its meaning. By focusing on suffixes (like -tion, -ly, and -ness), the children are not only improving their spelling but also expanding their vocabulary and learning how to craft more precise sentences.detectives” in their book!
🌍 Topic: The Commonwealth Connection
Our social studies focus has shifted to the Commonwealth and the Commonwealth Games. It’s been a fascinating look at how 56 diverse nations come together under shared values. We’ve been discussing:
Global Citizenship: What it means to be part of a global community.
The “Friendly Games”: Why the Commonwealth Games are so special, particularly their focus on inclusivity and para-sports.
Geography & Culture: Discovering where our partner nations are on the map and learning about their unique traditions.
If you want to keep the conversation going at home, ask your child which Commonwealth country they would most like to visit and why, or see if they can explain how the grid method helped them solve their latest maths problem!

This Week in Primary 6A

This week, Primary 6 took part in a range of team-building activities designed to develop cooperation and communication skills. Pupils worked together to solve challenges, share ideas, and support one another in completing tasks. These activities encouraged positive interaction, active listening, and problem-solving, helping to strengthen relationships within the class. It was great to see pupils demonstrating teamwork, resilience, and respect throughout.

P6A Learning Highlights This Week 📐📊✏️
This week, P6A have been busy developing their skills across numeracy and literacy, showing great focus, curiosity and creativity in their learning.
In numeracy, we have been learning all about angles and how to measure them accurately using protractors. Pupils practised identifying acute, right, obtuse and reflex angles before applying their skills to real-life problems and diagrams. There was lots of careful measuring, checking and discussing strategies to make sure results were accurate. It was great to see pupils supporting one another and growing in confidence with this tricky skill.
We have also been working on interpreting data and graphs. Pupils analysed different types of graphs, including bar charts and line graphs, learning how to read scales, compare values and explain what the data shows. They were challenged to answer reasoning questions and explain patterns and trends using mathematical language.
In literacy, our focus has been on descriptive writing. Pupils explored how writers use their five senses to create vivid pictures for the reader. Through short writing lessons and modelled examples, pupils practised using sensory language to describe settings and experiences in more detail. There was a strong emphasis on choosing powerful vocabulary and showing, rather than telling, what is happening in a scene.
Overall, P6A have worked hard, shown great engagement and continued to develop important skills that will support them across the curriculum. Well done to everyone for another productive and positive week of learning! 👏

This week in P6A

This week in Primary 6A, we had a visit from the PATHS team to help us with our buddy training. We acted out different playground situations that might happen when we are buddies. Some of the situations were tricky, but they helped us learn what to do, who to ask for help, and how to follow the buddy rules properly. We learned how important it is to be kind, calm, and helpful so that younger children feel safe and happy in the playground.
We are also getting very excited as we prepare for our Burns Showcase. We are learning two songs, Heather on the Hill and Caledonia, and practising two ceilidh dances. We have been working hard to remember the dance steps, move in time with the music, and help each other when someone forgets. We are having lots of fun and are really proud of how well we are working together. We can’t wait to show everyone what we have been learning!

🌟 Primary 6A Weekly Update! 🚀
✍️ Literacy Focus: To the Moon and Back
This week, Primary 6A has been channeling their inner astronauts! We’ve been concentrating on sharpening our recount writing skills. The class took on an exciting challenge: writing a detailed recount from the unique perspective of Neil Armstrong during the moon landing. They’ve worked hard to use strong descriptive language and structure their writing clearly.
📏 Numeracy Focus: Metric Measurement Mastery
In Maths, our focus shifted to measurement. We delved into the world of metric measurement, learning not just how to measure with accuracy but also how to confidently convert between different metric units (e.g., millimeters to centimeters, meters to kilometers). This is a crucial skill for real-world problem-solving!
🌍 Topic Work: Water Around the World
Our Topic work explored the vital resource of water. We compared and contrasted water uses in developed and developing countries, specifically looking at the differences and similarities between Scotland and Sudan. This has sparked some fantastic discussions about resource management and global citizenship.
🎨 Art Corner: Cubist Creatures
To get into the Halloween spirit, the class got creative in Art! Inspired by the famous artist Picasso and the Cubism movement, Primary 6A produced some truly unique and spooky masterpieces: a series of cubist Dracula portraits! They used geometric shapes and multiple perspectives to create abstract, eye-catching Halloween art.
We’ve had a busy and productive week! Please ask your child to share their Neil Armstrong recount or tell you about their Picasso-inspired Dracula!
