iCompose 2012 competition!

iCompose is a national composition competition which invites adults, pupils and teachers to create a piece of original music inspired by works in the National Galleries of Scotland Online Collection

There are many fabulous prizes on offer, including some top of the range music equipment donated by Roland. The winning compositions will be professionally recorded and performed by SCO musicians and Linn Records.

Every school taking part in the iCompose competition will receive a 25% discount voucher (off RRP) for Roland and Boss products, sponsored by Roland UK and Dawsons Education. To receive your voucher, simply submit a composition (categories A-F) by the deadline.

2010 was the first year of this competition and following a performance at the National Galleries of Scotland four lucky composers won the star prize of having their piece professionally recorded by Linn Records at City Halls, Glasgow.

Continued Professional Development

We can provide exciting and stimulating Continuing Professional Development (CPD) sessions for whole schools, departments, art forums and cluster groups.

These sessions cover a range of topics, such as:

how art can support and extend the Curriculum for Excellence
increasing teachers’ confidence in using object-based learning in the Galleries and the classroom
developing teachers’ skills in looking at art
using works of art in the classroom creatively
practical experience in different art techniques

Above sessions can be booked for a half day or full day.

We also offer specialist hands-on workshops for Secondary Art Teachers and Primary Art Specialists.

Edinburgh Workshops

The Scottish Government and the UK Safer Internet Centre are running an e-safety live event on 22 March with a choice of 12 workshops on topics such as ‘Online Gaming’ and ‘Protecting your Professional Identity’.

A Streetcar Named Desire – Free Talks and Workshops for Schools

Are you interested in finding out more about Scottish Ballet’s vibrant new production of A Streetcar Named Desire? Scottish Ballet is collaborating with theatre director Nancy Meckler to create a vibrant new take on Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer Prize-Winning Play.

Scottish Ballet’s Education Department offer a range of exciting activities to schools to deepen students understanding of Williams’ text and to learn more about Scottish Ballet’s unique production which combines drama with dance.

Catalyst: Inspiring Arts Ideas for Teachers

Struggle for confidence when teaching the arts? Looking for some fresh lesson ideas you can use across the curriculum? Catalyst is a programme of inspiring arts-based teacher training days running across the academic year.

Each Catalyst day is designed to help integrate the arts into your teaching practice. During the day you will work with professional artists and practitioners to build confidence in using the arts. Workshops will teach techniques and skills that you will feel confident to use across the curriculum.

The day will pass on interactive and innovative teaching ideas for P3 to P6. Each event will work with two art forms from: poetry, visual arts, drama, storytelling, dance and music.

There are a maximum of 30 places available per day so we strongly recommend booking soon as places fill up quickly. Catalyst 11.12 Booking Form

Thanks to generous funding from the Maaike McInnes Charitable Trust each day costs just £45 per person which includes lunch and a free copy of our 120 page Teachers Book.

East End Park Mural Competition

Carnegie College Design and Digital Media students visited the home of Dunfermline Athletic Football Club to see their work installed on the wall of the east stand of East End Park. As part of their course work, their lecturer Colin Maxwell, asked the students to produce a graphic that they felt displayed the spirit of Dunfermline. The students chose to depict local heroes, past and present, who they felt represented the city.

The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s summer schools

The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s summer schools for children, young people and adults have developed a reputation for their creativity, imagination and flair and over the past three years have grown into a body of intensive dance, drama, music, production and screen training events.

The Summer Schools have thrilled families, engaged with students who were considering performing arts training or assisted learners professional or personal development. These immersion courses are always focused on the highest quality learning and teaching, inclusion and creative engagement and are run by the most committed and dynamic tutors.

Some example Summer Schools in 2012 will be;

Children and Young People

1-2 or 3-4 year olds – Early Years Music
5-7 year olds – Professor Poggle and The Catastrophic Creature (Drama Course)
15-17 year olds – The Remake (Film and Performance course)

Adults (17+)

Acting: Stanislavski and Realism
