2050 Climate Group Opportunity

Young Scot, Scotland’s award-winning national youth information and citizenship agency, and the 2020 Climate Group, the national group working to deliver a low carbon future for Scotland. We are writing to ask you to help us to raise awareness and circulate an exciting new opportunity for young people; the 2050 Climate Group.

The 2050 Climate Group is a pioneering initiative within Scotland with the ultimate aim of empowering young people to shape Scotland’s low carbon future. The group will present a national platform to represent the voice of young people to engage, influence and shape the transformational change required for Scotland to progress to a low carbon economy. Group members will have the opportunity to engage in decision making at a national level and share their views, experiences and findings.

The 2050 Climate Group will make a unique contribution towards ensuring that young Scots have the opportunity to raise awareness of issues surrounding climate change and sustainable solutions and show young people that they need to be actively involved in creating a low carbon future for all. No formal qualifications are necessary but we do expect that all members have some degree of influence and leadership experience and will be able to commit to the group for a minimum of one year. It will provide young representatives with the opportunity to be part of leading the drive to a low carbon future for Scotland, undertake high quality training, improve skills and partake in great networking opportunities.

We are inviting young people aged 18-30 from across Scotland, who are passionate about the environment and want to make a difference, to apply to volunteer with this exciting new climate group and help to lead the drive to a low carbon future. This is an excellent opportunity for young individuals from business, NGO, Third Sector and community backgrounds, who are already having an influence in their communities, to make an even bigger impact.

Young Scot – Money for Life Challenge funding opportunity

Applications opening soon for the Money for Life Challenge

Do you work with young people who have ideas about how to improve money management skills in their communities? Are you looking for funding to support young single parents, young people with disabilities, young carers, and other vulnerable groups? Young Scot are offering £500 grants as part of the Money for Life Challenge.

What’s on offer?

There are 50 grants of £500 available in Scotland through the Money for Life Challenge. This includes:

·         £300 for your organisation to cover staff costs

·         £200 for the team to help run their project

The Challenge is open to teams of young people aged 16-24 in work-based learning, adult community learning, training organisations, and further education, and is designed to help young people tackle money management issues, for example around poverty or welfare reform, in relevant ways.

How does it work?

·         In collaboration with a project sponsor, teams of young people design their own project around issues that affect them. Last year’s teams addressed a wide range of topics, from camping on a budget to raising awareness of the hazards of payday lenders.

·         As a project sponsor, your role is to help your team of young people identify a money management need in their community and help them develop their project plan.

·         Each organisation can submit up to five projects to maximise impact and funding.

·         Young Scot can provide a number of resources to support your project, including examples of successful projects, guidance on how to run your project, and dedicated application support.

Why get involved?

The Money for Life Challenge can fit into existing equalities and inclusion programmes, helping empower young people to develop the practical skills they need to navigate the changing financial landscape. Challenge participants often find that their projects have given them the boost they needed to be able to get a job or progress onto education or training. Feedback from the last two years shows that young people felt they had gained:

·         confidence in their own abilities

·         leadership, communication, and teamwork skills

·         business and project management skills

·         money management skills

What next?

The application deadline is 22 November. Register your interest by contacting Allyson Doby (allysond@youngscot.org) or phoning 0131 313 2488. For more information, visit https://www.moneyforlifechallenge.org.uk/.

Now in its third year, the Money for Life Challenge was created by Lloyds Bank. Young Scot and College Development Network are working in partnership to deliver the Challenge in Scotland.

Young Scot and the Financial Services Authority

Young Scot and the Financial Services Authority are hosting an event:

“Simples?: Young People and Financial Services” on Wednesday 17 October at the Pearce Institute, Govan, Glasgow.

The event will feature a range of interactive, participatory and fun activities to give young people the opportunity to share their ideas and opinions on their use of financial products and services. Next year the Financial Services Authority is transforming into the new Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and wants to hear from the present – and future – customers of financial services, to increase their understanding and awareness about they affect the day-to-day lives of the public. Using digital tools, drama, video, games and lots more, participants will be able to take part in a wide range of interactive workshops covering some of the most relevant issues facing young people and financial services today. For example, they will have the chance to work out whether they are getting the best deal for their money, learn how to look for hidden costs in mobile phone contracts and insurance, and understand the jargon when opening bank accounts.  The event also provides the opportunity for young people to have their say on the future of their finances and feedback to the new FCA on how they can they can improve financial services and protection for young people.  If you work with young people and you are interested in attending the event register at http://youngpeopleandfinancialservices.eventbrite.co.uk or email fionamca@youngscot.org for further information.

Get the Picture! 2012

Following on from the success of last year’s Young People’s Day event, The Scottish Parliament is inviting young people from all across Scotland to this year’s ‘Get the Picture!’ event.  We are working in partnership with the Scottish Youth Parliament, YoungScot and Fife Youth Radio to create an event to remember.

We are looking for a wide range of groups of young people aged 16 to 25 years old from all over Scotland to come and make this event even bigger and better than ever before!  We would be very grateful therefore, if you would pass this e-mail on to any groups that you think would like to take part in this popular event.

One of the themes of this year’s Festival of Politics is ‘Positive Change’ and we have been working with a group of MSYPs to create a dynamic programme to reflect this.  Groups will have the opportunity to represent themselves at the Marketplace which will have a bustling festival feel and take part in 4 debates on topics that groups taking part will suggest.

Groups wishing to attend the Get the Picture event should complete the online Booking Form or email Frances Paulo at frances.paulo@scottish.parliament.uk

See Us… tell our creative story

Over the next three months, people from across Scotland, and the world, are encouraged to get creative and submit photographs and stories that sum up what Scottish creativity means to us, today. Part of the Year of Creative Scotland 2012 celebrations, See Us is a collaboration between Creative Scotland, Blipfoto, Young Scot and The Scotsman.

All entries will be welcome, with the project aiming to include all areas of Scottish creativity – from high arts to everyday creative acts – whether it’s a scene from one of Scotland’s major festivals, a snapshot from a local event, or picture of your own creative life.  The idea is to tell a story of Scottish creativity in pictures.

Entries can be submitted through blipfoto.com/seeus and the site will remain open throughout the summer months.

Selected entries will then be curated for exhibition and publication in the autumn by a panel including leading author Ian Rankin, world renowned violinist Nicola Benedetti and the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning, Michael Russell.
