Inspired? Get Writing! Creative Writing Competition 2013

School pupils and their teachers are invited to choose an inspirational painting, photograph, print or sculpture from the National Galleries of Scotland’s Collection and to create a piece of poetry or prose not exceeding 1,000 words in length.

Works may be viewed in person, or online at www.nationalgalleries.org/onlinecollections

There are three categories for school pupils:

Category A School Pupils Under 12

Category B School Pupils 12-14 Years of Age

Category C School Pupils 15-18 Years of Age

There will be ten awards in each category: Winner, two Runners-up and seven Special Merit.

All will be included in a public reading at the Scottish National Gallery in April 2013.

iCompose 2012 competition!

iCompose is a national composition competition which invites adults, pupils and teachers to create a piece of original music inspired by works in the National Galleries of Scotland Online Collection

There are many fabulous prizes on offer, including some top of the range music equipment donated by Roland. The winning compositions will be professionally recorded and performed by SCO musicians and Linn Records.

Every school taking part in the iCompose competition will receive a 25% discount voucher (off RRP) for Roland and Boss products, sponsored by Roland UK and Dawsons Education. To receive your voucher, simply submit a composition (categories A-F) by the deadline.

2010 was the first year of this competition and following a performance at the National Galleries of Scotland four lucky composers won the star prize of having their piece professionally recorded by Linn Records at City Halls, Glasgow.

Continued Professional Development

We can provide exciting and stimulating Continuing Professional Development (CPD) sessions for whole schools, departments, art forums and cluster groups.

These sessions cover a range of topics, such as:

  • how art can support and extend the Curriculum for Excellence
  • increasing teachers’ confidence in using object-based learning in the Galleries and the classroom
  • developing teachers’ skills in looking at art
  • using works of art in the classroom creatively
  • practical experience in different art techniques

Above sessions can be booked for a half day or full day.

We also offer specialist hands-on workshops for Secondary Art Teachers and Primary Art Specialists.

National Galleries of Scotland art competition for schools

In 2012 the National Galleries of Scotland (NGS) art competition for schools celebrates its ninth year and the NGS has welcomed a new title partner. The Tesco Bank Art Competition for Schools hopes to inspire children across the country with the National Galleries of Scotland’s superb collection of artworks.

Over 30,000 children from all over Scotland have participated since 2004. An exhibition of the winning works from 2011 is on show at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary from 20 January – 24 May 2012 so why not go along and check out the talent on display?

This year’s winning works will be proudly displayed at the newly refurbished Scottish National Portrait Gallery.

There are six categories to choose from: Nursery; Lower and Upper Primary; Secondary and Special Education Schools. With clear links to Curriculum for Excellence and fabulous prizes to be won make sure not to miss the closing date of 4 May 2012.
