Mapping the Nation: representations of Scotland, 1200-2000, conference
Saturday 26 April (9.00 – 5.00 pm)
A one-day event for teachers of history and literature in Scottish secondary schools exploring the multiple ways in which Scotland has been visualized and represented through cartography, history, and literature. There will be presentations on current projects that can be used to enhance the teaching of Scotland’s rich historical and literary past; and a round table workshop session to explore the potential of future collaborations, with displays of projects, resources, and publications. Speakers include history and literature teachers from universities and schools, National Library of Scotland on historical mapping, National Trust for Scotland on Bannockburn and many more. Opportunity – Network Rail Ambassadors
Interested in Rail Safety? Want to enhance your CV? Complete a Saltire Award?
If you answered “yes” to these three questions, we’d like to hear from you.
We’re looking for 30 young people aged 14 – 21 years from across Scotland to become Ambassadors to participate in a 12-month peer investigation programme in local Primary and Secondary schools to help promote safety on the railways and the new improvements to their local rail services. You will have the chance to advise important decision-makers from Network rail on what you think should happen to try and change young people’s and Scotland’s relationship with rail safety.
As a Ambassador you will take part in approximately 4-6 meetings and events throughout the year and also do some investigation work in your own time with the support of Young Scot and local partners.

Tron Ambassador and Partner Schools Scheme
Tron Participation run a host of schemes for schools and pupils to get involved in;
Tron Skillshops
Drama classes for pupils P1 – S6. Weekly workshops held at the Tron Theatre for participants to explore the art of theatre making.

Tron Ambassadors
The Tron Ambassadors scheme gives S4-S6 school pupils the chance to be behind the scenes of a
working theatre. It enables them to make a deeper connection with the Tron Theatre and
gain a better understanding of the industry.
We are recruiting new Ambassadors for the 2014/15 term.
Tron Ambassadors will –
•Meet 1-2 times per month at the Tron Theatre (after school weekday meetings)
•Take part in tasks and challenges out with allocated Ambassador meetings
•Keep in contact via email with Tron Drama Officer on related tasks and challenges
•Take part in a variety of theatre workshops/master classes
•Attend Tron Shows
• Host Tweet Meets within the Tron Theatre linked to Tron productions
• Promote the Tron to friends and family
• Blog, tweet and post about the Ambassadors scheme, Tron shows and events
•Work as a team to create a Front of House event at Tron Skillshops show

Partner Schools
This scheme allows Tron Participation to work closely with 2-3 schools each academic year and share our expertise. We work with schools within Glasgow and the surrounding local authorities.
The Partner schools programme is a mix of in school workshops, theatre trips and back stage tours. The partnership is hosted via Glow allowing us to keep in touch.

Lantra Secondary School Awards now open for nominations!
Lantra Scotland, the sector skills council for the land-based and aquaculture industries, is seeking early nominations for their Secondary School Awards which take place at the Land-based and Aquaculture Learner of the Year Awards in early 2015. The award is open to both urban and rural secondary schools with the winning school in each category receiving £250.00.
The Secondary School Awards recognise school projects and activities which support and encourage increased knowledge and understanding in rural learning. To highlight and celebrate the success of school initiatives, Lantra has brought forward the closing date for nominations this year to 16th May 2014. This will allow the judging panel to visit the nominated schools during the Spring season, enabling them to get a more comprehensive look at the entrants and their respective projects in full bloom.
The award finalists will be announced at Lantra Scotland’s stand at the Royal Highland Agricultural Show on Thursday 19th June, and the winning schools will be announced at the award ceremony and gala dinner early in 2015.

Creative Enterprise Fund
Creative Scotland and Young Scot see the Creative Enterprise Fund as providing a means for Scotland’s young people to develop their artistic talent and unlock opportunities within the creative industries. The Fund aims to promote the values of creative enterprise and leadership, creating positive pathways to employment and providing wider benefits to local communities.
The Fund can offer awards of up to £200 for individuals aged between 15 and 22 or £750 for groups of three or more young people, where two thirds of any group are aged between 15-22.
The next deadline for applications is 13 April 2014.

Erasmus+ – European Commission Funding
The new Erasmus+ funding programme offers UK organisations opportunities to fund European mobility and partnership projects. It is the successor to Youth in Action and other European education programmes.
The next deadline for applications is 11am on 30 April 2014 for projects starting between 1 September 2014 and 28 February 2015.
Applications for this deadline can be made for funding under:
- Key Action 1 for Youth Exchange, European Voluntary Service and Youth Worker mobility
- Key Action 2 for Strategic Partnerships for Youth. Organisations and informal groups of young people can apply.

Scotland’s Stories of Home
Scottish Book Trust has launched an exciting new writing project to encourage pupils and teachers across Scotland to write about what home means to them, with a selection of entries to be published in a free e-publication. Scotland’s Stories of Home will run from 23 March – 30 June, and in that time Scottish Book Trust wants to build a written picture of what Scotland means to the children who live here. Is it your house, your home town, your home team or your homeland? Is it your family, your friends or your online community? Is it a smell, a taste, a sound or a sensation?
Submissions should be personal pieces of writing about real-life experiences and should be no longer than 1000 words. They can be written in a variety of different forms, such as a story, poem, song lyrics, a rap, a letter or even diary entry, and should be submitted via the Scottish Book Trust website. To help school pupils contribute their responses, Scottish Book Trust has designed a resource pack full of activity suggestions, aimed at primary and secondary school teachers and librarians who would like to use the Scotland’s Stories of Home project in their school. The resources are available at scottishbooktrust.com/storiesofhome.
With enjoyment and choice at the heart, these resources will help pupils of all abilities develop writing, research and talk skills while exploring the objects, places or concepts that mean most to them. A selection of pupils’ stories, chosen by a panel of young people, will be published in a free e-publication available to download during Book Week Scotland 2014.
Internet Safety Drama workshop
Come along to a creative workshop on the 28th March, to help the Adult Protection Committee develop ‘Caught in the Net’ a drama about internet safety. There will be a workshop for older adults, and a workshop for adults with a learning disability. You don’t have to take part in the drama – just have an opinion! Get Scotland Dancing
Get Scotland Dancing (GSD) was created by a Scottish Government policy in 2010 and is one of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Legacy programmes. It is also part of Culture 2014, the national strand of the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme. It is free to join and school/youth groups can register at getscotlanddancing.org. Being part of the online community means you can find out what’s going on in your area and make connections with other dance groups and teachers who could help develop your work.
