The Travelling Gallery’s Spring 2014 exhibition, I HEART SCOTLAND, is a solo show and takes a refreshing look at how contemporary artist Rachel Maclean, has chosen to explore her ideas about Scottish national identity.
Issues around power, culture, politics and history are raised together with romanticism and folktales – all through Rachel’s ingenious use of costume performance, digital photography, film and installation.
By means of dark humour and remarkable technical skills, Rachel offers insightful and shrewd observations on these and other significant themes, creating a complex and surreal vision of modern Scotland in what is certainly an important year for people to ponder its future.
The I HEART SCOTLAND exhibition includes work that was commissioned, published and produced by Edinburgh Printmakers Workshop for her very successful exhibition there during the 2013 Edinburgh Art Festival.
So far, touring mainly to Secondary schools, we have visited venues accross Angus, Edinburgh, Midlothian and the Highlands where the installation has stimulated lots of discussion and created quite a buzz of excitement amongst pupils and teachers alike. Fife Contemporary Art & Craft (FCA&C) are delighted to announce the ‘Weather to Whether’ event in partnership with Bright Green Hydrogen, who operates the Hydrogen Office project in Methil.
The event is aimed at S2/S3 pupils and will showcase FCA&C’s‘Weather Project’, which took place in the Levenmouth area, as well as visual displays/working models of power from the weather and hydrogen and energy storage by Bright Green Hydrogen (see programme below).
We are delighted to be able to offer a travel subsidy for this event, supported by Fife Cultural Trust’s Seedcorn Transport Scheme (details and form below).

FCT SEEDCORN TRANSPORT SCHEME
The maximum amount you can apply for is £250 per school towards transport costs to attend this event. Once you have confirmed your booking at the event through FCA&C, please complete the attached Seedcorn Transport Scheme Application Form and return it to the address at the bottom of the form. This fund is administered by FCT Cultural Partnerships and they will confirm your award and advise how to claim the monies for your school.
Thousands of Scotland’s school pupils will demonstrate their artistic talents to the world at Scotland’s Commonwealth Games. More than 700 schools across the country have participated in a national art competition run by Game On Scotland, the official education programme for the Games.
This competition, launched in May 2013, has provided a unique opportunity for Scottish schoolchildren to create Games-inspired artwork for the Athletes’ Village. The artwork will adorn the rooms of the Village, which will be a true home from home for all the competitors coming to Glasgow from the 70 nations and territories of the Commonwealth.
Community Celebrations Grant Application

At the Scottish Refugee Council we have been busy organising a very exciting programme for Refugee Week Scotland 2014! It will run from 16th – 22nd June in venues across the country, and we’d love for as many organisations as possible to get involved this year. The 2014 theme is ‘Welcome’, so we want you to have a think about how ‘welcome’ is shown in your community.
The SRC are awarding grants of £100 – £450 to help small community organisations to organise your own events as part of Refugee Week Scotland 2014. We strongly encourage you to apply and to spread the word to any other organisations or community groups that you think may be interested!
There are two files attached below – an Application Form and Grant Application Guidance Notes. Please read them both before applying! Receiving the grant from the SRC is unfortunately not guaranteed, so to make sure you are in the best position for acceptance, we urge you to read through these Guidance Notes thoroughly. We are looking for ideas that explore the theme – ‘Welcome’ – and discuss all the different things that this word can mean. For example, your activity could:
– Explore how welcome is shown in your community
– Encourage people to share their experiences of how welcome they have been made to feel here
– Encourage people to share experiences of how they have welcomed life in Scotland
Most importantly, you must demonstrate how your event will appeal to other communities and general public, and how you plan to involve them! The Community Celebration Events are the first step towards wide-scale understanding and integration among asylum seeker, refugee and local communities across the whole of Scotland. We want to know how your event will help this become a reality!

The National Theatre of Scotland is asking you to make a Light Up Lantern out of junk, and join hundreds of others in your local community and around the world, to plant your lantern in a forgotten place. It might be a local park or derelict ground; it might be your garden or back court. What’s important is you plant it and share the moment when Spring arrives, with the promise of a flowering future.
So, anytime from Thursday 20th March, take a photo or video of your Light Up Lantern and your promise.

What inspires a leading contemporary artist? How does an artist go about his work? How do I develop as an artist? If you’ve ever had questions like these then this is the Glow TV event for you.
As part of the preparation for the MUSA Young Artist Award 2014 renowned Fife-based artist Will Maclean will be talking about his life and work and will be answering YOUR questions.
Will is going to speak briefly about his own work and career before taking your questions.
If you are not able to watch the session live you can submit questions in advance by email for Will to answer.
The MUSA Young Artist Award is an art competition for schools in Fife organised by the Museum of the University of St Andrews.
Schools from all over Scotland are invited to participate in this Glow TV event.

Red Kite Animation and Edinburgh Museums & Galleries present an exciting animation competition designed to celebrate Edinburgh’s rich heritage and the art of animation.
Budding animators are invited to submit short animated films of 1-3 minutes, based upon either a real or imagined backstory to an object of their choice, housed in one of Edinburgh Museums & Galleries, including the City Art Centre, Museum of Childhood, Laursiton Castle and the Museums Store.

The subject working group for Music convened for the initial meeting on Monday 3 February
The subject working group provided an opportunity to discuss the development of creative approaches to music education across sectors. This working group mirrors the groups being brought together from the other Expressive Arts subject areas, Art & Design, Drama and Dance who will feed in to the Expressive Arts conversation days.
We would invite practitioners across sectors to share their thoughts and views.
