A key starting point for global citizenship education is a richer understanding of your own culture. Here in Scotland there are great new resources, challenges and projects which will facilitate learning about this country and what it means to be a Scot.

The not-for-profit organisation TED is best known for outstanding videos called TED Talks, which disseminate new ideas on subjects such as technological developments and shifts in society. Now the organisation has launched a new education initiative TED-ED, which includes a dedicated education channel on YouTube.
This channel already includes some great video assets for Global Citizenship education, with expert teachers, communicators and animators creating videos which explain important concepts and issues. This bank of high-quality educational digital content will continue to build up, as new clips are added, and forms a valuable resource for teachers looking for a stimulating supplement to school lessons and class work.

Art Session is The Fruitmarket Gallery’s space for 13-25 year olds to discuss and share ideas about contemporary art. The group meets on the first Sunday of every month to find out about the Gallery’s exhibitions and help plan programmes for other young people. Meetings are social, informal and free.
Art Session provides the opportunity to get involved in the Gallery’s creative programme, work with artists and Gallery staff, gain professional experience, meet friends and develop confidence and creative skills

A free exhibition is being held in Cupar’s Corn Exchange on Friday 27 April to showcase a series of photographs taken by the town’s schoolchildren. Pupils from the four primary and secondary schools in Cupar have been working with a professional photographer on the project to inspire their community to be more active. During the two-month ‘Be Active – Art in the Windows’ project the children were taught many different ways to be active, and were then encouraged to photograph their efforts around the town.

Fife Council announces that a partnership project between Community Learning & Development, Glenwood High and NHS Fife has supported six young people to become Peer Educators.
Cross-artform leadership programme for mid-career professionals working in learning and education
Applications are invited from colleagues working in learning and education roles in the arts to participate in the Extend Leadership Programme 2012-13. Extend will support up to 15 mid-career colleagues. The programme aims to give participants the confidence and skills to achieve a greater degree of leadership in the future. This could be through gaining a leadership position or through achievements that raise the status of the profession as a whole.

Funding has been secured from Arts Council England for engage to deliver a leadership programme for colleagues working in learning and education in the arts and cultural sectors from 2012-15. Additional support has been provided by Creative Scotland and the Arts Council of Wales in 2012-13 to support the participation of professionals working in Scotland and Wales respectively.
Building on feedback from the pilot programme, Extend will comprise:
A training needs analysis
Two residential programmes, including guest speakers and sessions on advocacy and campaigning
Mentoring
A joint project for participants
The fee for the programme is:
£800 for participants working in England and Wales
£400 for participants working in Scotland
Extend is open to mid-career professionals (either employed or self-employed) who work in the arts in education and learning roles and are resident and working in England, Scotland or Wales. See the applicant information document for full criteria.
