‘Relax Kids’

“The pupils of Uplawmoor Primary were learning different strategies to help them relax.  Sometimes we all feel a little stressed and Vicki helped us focus on deep and concentrated breathing which in turn helped us feel calm and relaxed.  We played some fun games which helped us manage our emotions and we even did some massage on our friends.

The Gold School Sport Award is recognition of the school’s achievements in putting quality physical education and school sport at the heart of a school’s planning, practice and ethos.

The Gold Award also highlights that Uplawmoor Primary School has shown excellent practice across the core areas of the Award and demonstrated an on-going commitment to increase young people’s opportunities and engagement in quality physical education, school sport and leadership, and provide clear pathways to life-long participation in sport.

Fiona Mckay, Head Teacher at Uplawmoor Primary School, said: “We are absolutely delighted with our sportscotland Gold Sport Award. Our staff work incredibly hard to promote sport both as part of the curriculum and as extra-curricular activity too. We know how important physical activity is and we put a real effort into making sure it is an important part of the school day. Our children enjoy the activities and are so enthusiastic and their parents’ support is really important in encouraging them to attend our after school clubs. We feel we are playing our part setting them on the road to healthy, active lives.”

For the past couple of weeks the Primary 7 children have been partnered with some of our older friends.   Lauren,  Dean and Josh have been helping with the Mario kart on the Wii in our classroom , Emma and Emily have been practising hanging out the washing in out gym hall  and Annabelle and I  have been dancing!  The ladies taught us how to dance the waltz and for our older friends, we have been teaching them how to dance the Gangham style!

We have only got a few more practises and then we figure out who is going to be in the team. We will keep you up to date on chosen  team!

Fostering

Fostering

There are around 27 amazing children and young people from East Renfrewshire who are currently being looked after by foster carers.  Many will eventually return to their families. In some cases this may take a matter of days or weeks, for others it may take longer and children could be living with their foster family for one or two years, or into adulthood.

If you can answer yes to the following …

  • You like children and can provide a safe and nurturing home?
  • You have energy, patience and a good sense of humour?
  • You work well as part of a team?

There are children and young people in the local area who are waiting to be cared for by someone like you.  Click on the image above to find out more.

Primary 7 – ‘Safety in the Park’

By Amy Cupples

Today the Primary 7s visited Arthurlie Park, to take part in ‘Safety in  the Park’. There were different activities to do such as the dangers of alcohol. We wore goggles to look like we were drunk, it was good fun but it made me realise how dizzy you can feel.  Also,  there was an area with a car crash and we were investigators and we had to figure out whose fault it was between the cyclist and the driver.  The other activities were about how to be safe in the park if you see something that is concerning.

Have a wonderful summer!

Help in the Garden

Our Constant Garden   by Annabelle Leitch      AL

Uplawmoor Primary School was fortunate to be chosen to participate in a garden project called ‘Constant Garden’.

A company called Rocket Gardens Limited, based in Cornwall gave an undertaking to supply our school with five deliveries of plants throughout the year.

To date, we have received a wonderful assortment of plants including, a selection of kale , carrots , spinach , onions , land cress , purslane (salad leaves) , lettuces ,peas ,potatoes , beetroot and Chinese cabbage (pak choi and tatsoi).

We received our first delivery of plants in October 2014. Most of these have survived our severe Uplawmoor winter. Our selection of Kales are particularly hardy , very tasty and are growing from strength to strength.

Our potatoes were planted several weeks ago in tyres and we received another delivery of plants 3 weeks ago.

We had to work furiously to get these ‘plug plants’ into pots and they are at present being stored in the polytunnel awaiting planting in our school garden.

As we expect to receive another two deliveries from Rocket Gardens before summer break, Josh has built two more raised beds to make additional space available for planting.

Our Final Day at Lockerbie Manor

By Shannon Walsh,

So, our adventures have come to an end. We have made lots of new friends from Crookfur and Neilston and have all faced lots of fears!

imageDespite missing her little sister, Erin’s favourite part was canoeing and kayaking and she managed to stay relatively dry. Niamh loved the evening walk and although it was hard work reaching the top, the views were beautiful. Innes faced his fears on the zip wire and flew through the air like Indiana Jones! His favourite activity was the obstacle course though.

Rob did a great job tackling the low ropes which was also Tiana’s highlight because she loved the challenge of travelling across the tyres.  As for me, my highlight was abseiling as I’m afraid of heights and I managed to conquer my fears by walking backwards down a huge wall!

We’ve had a brilliant trip and although we’ve missed our friends and families we’ve had a great experience and have made memories and friends we will never forget.

Head Teacher Awards

Well done to Tiana and Amy who received Mrs McKay’s Head Teacher award for their efforts in French.  They wrote about their likes and dislikes, their pets and school life.  Tiana has just started learning French since she joined us in August so a huge well done to her!
