We will be celebrating World Book Day tomorrow at school and pupils are welcome to come to school dressed as their favourite character, author or book! Looking forward to seeing everybody and having some literacy fun tomorrow!
Good luck to our cross country runners who will competing in the East Renfrewshire Primary Country Championships at Rouken Glen tomorrow morning. You will do us proud as always!
Primary 4/5 have very exciting news. We entered a crazy creature competition which we had to write a story under a hundred words and we got a letter to say we are all getting our work published in a book! If we win the competition we get £1000 and if we are second we get £500. In third place you get £250 for your whole school . We will give it to the pupil council the money if we win! P4/5 were given an area of the classroom to create a space which they felt would enhance their learning. After much discussion they decided to create a reading area. They then researched ideas and designed and created their own reading ‘den’. As you can see they are making good use of the space already!
“It’s nice and quiet in our den, so it’s good for reading’ Daniel
“It’s like a relaxing reading station with beanbags and pillows. It was good that we came up with the idea.” Alex

P6/7 have been learning about poetry and we linked it to our right of the month. Lots of authors around the world participated in an event organised by UNICEF called tiny stories so we decided to take part too. We wrote a poem about what we want for every child, all of them were very good but Alexander Street’s (P6) stood out.
What I want for every child By Alexander Street
I want every child to
have a home with lots of room
to play in.
I want every child to
be able to look into the eyes
of a loving parent or guardian.
I want every child to
wake up and hear birds singing
instead of gunshots.
I want every child to
run away from a chaser
instead of their home.
I want every child to
have a full meal
instead of the remains of one.
P4/5 have competed in a writing contest called Crazy Creatures. Everyone had to write a story that was 100 words or under. Everyone had think of a creature and an enemy with super powers and then draw and write about it.
The winners will get it published in our library and it will be available for the pupils to read. They will also get a Crazy Creature goody bag and £ 1,000.

Well done to Abi Grierson (P6) who is storming her way through various books as part of our Reading Challenge.
“I have read 15 books since we started the challenge on the 31st of October. I struggle with reading and I feel this challenge has helped me improve my reading skills. I am enjoying reading now and I read in class and at night before I go to my bed. I just finished ‘Hop on Pop’ and most of the Dr Suess books are really good.”
It is World Book Day at Uplawmoor Primary School. Miss Miller has been busy organising a fun day of activities and storytelling to celebrate books, illustrators, authors and most importantly, READING!
After a parade of costumes, all of the children voted for their favourite ‘character’ and the winners were as follows:
P1/2 Zoe (Robin Hood)
P2/3 Angelina (Tiger who came to tea)
P4/5 Gabriel (Diary of the Wimpy Kid)
P6/7 Cameron (The Scarecrow from Goosebumps)
Thank you to Mrs Wengel, Mrs McGillivray and Miss Green for coming into school and reading to the children. They thoroughly enjoyed having a new face read to them in class!

The boys and girls of Uplawmoor enjoyed a trip to Alloway last Tuesday, to visit the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum.
The extensive museum is set in 10 acres of beautiful countryside in Alloway and the site includes a collection of buildings and landmarks that are all connected to the poet’s life, including Burns’ Cottage where he was born in 1759, the Burns Monument and Brig O’ Doon, from his famous poem Tam O’ Shanter.
Look out for our very own young Robert B….Black!
Just a quick reminder of our whole school trip tomorrow (Tuesday 10th March). Children should wear school uniform and bring a packed lunch in a plastic bag.
To keep in the Burns theme, the website committee have taken some photographs of the work the children have completed on the works of Robert Burns.
The boys and girls are excited to welcome friends and family to enjoy our annual Burns celebration. The children have been busy learning poems and songs to celebrate the life and times of Robert Burns.
There will be a variety of entertainment from each class and we look forward to seeing you all on Friday afternoon!
The pursuers and defenders of Primary 6 and 7 were called to court on Monday 26th January in the case of Mrs Telfer vs Talk and Text Communications. Uplawmoor Primary School took part in the West of Scotland category and were competing against two other Primary Schools in Glasgow.
The children did a wonderful job and representing their clients and have worked so hard to ensure they were prepared for court. Amongst the children we had witnesses, solicitors, reporters, gown makers and court artists.
A special well done to Niamh who was the defending solicitor and Erin who was the pursuing solicitor. You both took on a very important (and scary) role and made us all very proud.
This was a once in a lifetime experience for the children and allowed them to apply their learning in a real life context. We await the results…
Primary 6/7 were invited to Eastwood House on Friday 9th January to debate in front of the Lord Provost. They chose the motion “every child should use an Ipad in primary school instead of jotters and textbooks“.
The children worked hard on their opposing and proposing arguements and the the final vote was against the motion (8 votes against, 7 votes for).
