Makaton

What is Makaton?

Makaton is a unique language programme that uses symbols and signs in conjunction with speech to enable people to communicate, supporting the development of communication, language and literacy skills.

Makaton symbols and signs provide a visual representation of language which increases understanding and makes expressive communication easier.

Makaton can be used with all children to help:

  • Communicate what they need, want, think or feel
  • Make themselves understood by using signs / symbols
  • Develop their attention, looking and listening skills
  • Develop their understanding of speech and promote their communication development

It supports inclusion as children with and without language difficulties can communicate, learn and play together more easily.

At Glenwood, we actively promote the use of Makaton in a variety of ways including our sign of the week, in conversations, and signing and singing to our favourite nursery rhymes and songs.
