Learning outdoors

“The journey through education for any child in Scotland must include opportunities for a series of planned, quality outdoor learning experiences.”

Education Scotland

At Glenwood Family Centre we recognise the value of outdoor learning. We offer a wide range of experiences in different outdoor environments to encourage children to develop their confidence and self-esteem and apply their learning in new contexts.

Children have the opportunity for outdoor play on a daily basis…in ALL weathers!

We have 2  main outdoor areas within the nursery grounds which offer different experiences. The side garden is mainly grass and has trees for climbing and a rope swing. There is a canoe and an A-frame hide out, both which are popular for role play, singing and just hanging out in.

The back garden has a variety of experiences and resources including our vegetable patches, sand pit, climbing frame, gutter wall and puddle pool amongst many other things! We also have bikes, large loose parts and a couple of mud kitchens in this area. We have a large outdoor classroom which links directly with our playroom.

We have weekly visits to the woodlands in Eastwood Park for Woodland Adventures where the children have the opportunity to explore what this environment can offer. The children are very much leaders of their own learning.
