Giffnock Primary Badminton Team

Yesterday Giffnock Primary Badminton Team took part in the East Renfrewshire Primary School Badminton Finals in Barrhead and our team came 3rd out of 7 teams!

Last year Giffnock came 5th out of 7 schools so there has been a great improvement and the team did exceptionally well considering that the school does not have an after-school badminton club and the team has not had much chance to practise together.

It was really close with Uplawmoor at one point and the team came close to 2nd Place. There were not many points in it!

Well done!

Christmas Fair Stalls

P6 pupils blew ‘The Dragons’ away yesterday afternoon during their very professional pitches for investment from the Parent Council for their Christmas Fair stalls. They have come up with four very creative ideas which they researched and budgeted. Finance secured, the classes will now go into production and then start marketing their products so look out for information on the school website and twitter feed and get along to the fair on Sat 3rd to snap up their festive gifts. Well done P6!

Parent Council – Wear Something Seasonal Friday 2nd December/Christmas Fair

The Parent Council have asked us to share the following information with you.

‘Wear Something Seasonal’ – Friday 2nd December

To support the School’s Christmas Fair on Saturday 3rd December, all children are able to wear seasonal accessories (for example a hat, hair-band or jumper) alongside their normal uniform on this day.

If you can, we would also ask for donations that you can provide for the Christmas Fayre to be brought in that day. We need prizes for the raffle and red items for the very popular red stall.

Everyone loves home baking and it is critical for the tea room, so we need your cakes (and tiffin and shortbread and scones….)

Many thanks in advance!

The Parent Council.

Tempest Photographs

Nursery – P7

Dear Parent / Carer

As you are aware individual and family photographs were taken in school on Tuesday 15th November 2016.  Your child should have brought home his/her photograph and order envelope.  If you have a sibling in the nursery (or in the school) it may be that the family photograph will be sent home with them rather than the eldest child.

Instructions as to how to place an order are given on the proof order form but for clarity you can either do this yourself online or you can return the order form to the school by Wednesday 23rd November 2016.  If you are paying by cheque this must be made payable to Tempest Photography.

Please note that if you wish to place an order after 23rd November you will have to personally send a late order directly to Tempest Photography (details on proof order form) and you should include an extra £4.00 for this service.  We will be unable to accept late orders at the school office.

Please ensure that your child’s name, class and order value are clearly marked on the proof envelope before returning it to the class teacher.

Thank you for your co-operation.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Diamond Challenge

Young Person Services are urging people across East Renfrewshire to challenge themselves as part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) Diamond Challenge.

They are holding this special 60th anniversary event to help raise funds to transform lives of disadvantaged young people across the UK.

As part of the 60-inspired challenges, locals can choose to join a team of 60 people in a relay to cycle, run, swim and walk 60 miles, or pick a challenge more personal to you.

They are looking for 300 people to join in and make East Renfrewshire’s challenge the biggest one in Britain.

People of all ages and abilities can get involved and for those who don’t want to take part in a physical activity there is the opportunity to bake, learn an instrument, hula-hoop, sing or do yoga.

The East Ren Diamond Challenge event takes place on Friday 25 November 2016 from 3-7pm at Eastwood High School, Newton Mearns, G77 6NQ.

For more information and to sign up for the event, go to the Duke of Edinburgh website. If you are coming along to participate on the day please email Paul.Tulloch@eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk and he will send you a time slot and more information.

Rocket Seeds from Space

Rocket Science seeds experiment complete results released

At last we have the full results from the experiment Giffnock Primary took part in last session.

In April the Rocket Science team of volunteers planted rocket lettuce seeds which had been in space and seeds which had stayed on Earth. We didn’t know which was which and we had to make sure that both sets received the same amount of sunlight and water and were treated exactly the same. Our results can be seen in the picture below.

Final Results
Results from Giffnock Primary School

We found that the seeds which came from the blue packet grew slightly less well than the ones from the red packet. When Tim Peake came back to Earth in June he revealed that it was the blue packet of seeds which had been on the International Space Station with him.

Earlier this week the Royal Horticultural Society and UK Space Agency gave BBC News exclusive access to the results. You can read the full article by clicking on this link:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-37826704

And the results are…seeds that have been in space grow almost as well as those that have stayed on Earth. Overall more than 320,000 individual measurements were collected – making the experiment scientifically robust and one of the most detailed of its kind ever carried out. The results will be useful to scientists trying to find ways of growing food in space.

At Giffnock Primary we are really proud to have taken part in such an important real life science experiment.

Parent Council Run Scotland Event

In September the parent Council organised the Run The Length of Scotland event to raise funds. Every child who took part ran a mile and collectively on the day all children ran the equivalent distance of Dunnet Head Lighthouse (the Northern most point in Scotland) to Mull of Galloway Lighthouse (the Southern most point). The children organised sponsors and then ran in the school playground.

This was a great event and Giffnock Primary ran from one end of Scotland to the other! The event raised an amazing £4431, so many thanks to the Parent Council and to everyone who helped and took part!
