Free School Meal Entitlement and Pupil Equity Funding

The Scottish Executive has recently provided significant funding to schools across Scotland in order to further support equity in learning for all children. The Executive decided to base the amount that each school received upon the number of children with a Free School Meal entitlement and their intention is to continue this funding for at least a further three years.

If your child is eligible for a Free School Meal entitlement, we would encourage you to register for this as not only will it provide that benefit for your own child, it will also result in additional funding through the Pupil Equity Fund being provided to Giffnock Primary School.

Within our cluster, we are aiming to raise the profile of this entitlement and Woodfarm High School has put together a flier which details relevant information; whilst some of the details on it are specific to Woodfarm, it does provide clear and useful guidance.

If you would like any further information or support with the process, our school office can assist you further in this matter.

Walk to School Week

Giffnock Primary School Walk to School Week

At Giffnock Primary School, we are keen to encourage children to be healthy, safe and care for the environment. Walking all or part of the journey to school is a great way for children to get fit, healthy and active.

Of course, we understand that it might not be realistic for everyone to walk the whole way, but why not ‘Park and Stride’ – that is, park the car further away from the school gates and walk the last bit of the journey together?

Walking Bus activities

  • We will encourage all children to walk to school between 15th and 19th May.
  • A staff member will organise an informal Walking Bus to support children to walk the last part of their journey together.
  • Pupils should meet at our meeting point at the entrance to Huntly Park, next to the pavilion, ready to walk back to school at 8:40am.
  • Children will be issued with a fluorescent vest and will walk down Church Road, Rosslea Drive, onto Academy Road and into school.

All parents wishing to accompany the Walking Bus will be most welcome.

Our next Parent Council meeting is on Monday 22nd May at 7pm in the staff room which you are welcome to come along to.

Then our final fundraising and social event of the year is Quingo on Friday 2nd June from 7pm – 10pm at Giffnock North Athletics Social Club.

Quingo is a family fun night with a quiz, prize bingo, raffle and kids disco.  Tickets are priced at £5 each which includes pizza and pakora. Infants are free and larger families will only be charged for up to two children’s tickets.

Quingo tickets will be on sale in school in the front playground on Friday 19th May at drop off and pick up.  Any remaining tickets after the 19th can be reserved by emailing giffnockpc@hotmail.co.uk and if we are oversubscribed, we will have a waiting list so please notify us if you buy tickets but can no longer attend.

If you can help with donations of prizes, please do get in touch with the PC.

We had a fantastic night last year and we are looking forward to seeing lots of families there again this year.

Thank you for your continued support.

Digital Learning Week and free access to Microsoft 365

During the week beginning Monday 15th May, Giffnock Primary will be supporting the national ‘Digital Learning Week’ initiative. The aim is to promote digital learning through encouraging our children to try new forms of digital technology. Some of our children have put together this promotional ‘video’ using a tellagami app on the iPads. Look out for tweets during the week on our school twitter feeds to find out what our classes are getting up to.

We also wanted to highlight for you the free access to Microsoft 365 programmes that is available to all of our children outside of school through their Glow logins. Each of our children has their own Glow login which they can use both inside and out of school, enabling free access to all of the Microsoft 365 suite.
