Confident Individuals – Healthy Eating

Bacon and eggs were the order of the day when half of the Transition class took part in their practical cookery lesson. There were all Confident Individuals when they chose a healthier way to prepare bacon (grill) and eggs (scrambled). They used the hot grill very safely and microwaved the eggs. Some pupils used the switches to help start and stop the microwave so that the eggs were cooked to perfection. Only one complaint – Mr Nicoll never saw a scrap of bacon or eggs!

Successful Learners – Numeracy

The Transition class had some more sweets to sort into groups this week. They were Successful Learners when they made rows of sweets to compare numbers. We discovered that the split of sweets in a Heroes packet is fairly even. As usual, the sweets that no-one likes were present in the highest number (toffee eclairs – yuck!), and there was one solitary Twirl.

Music: Producing a Sound – Confident Individuals

We combined music and bonfire night this week by creating a small performance using gym balls, beaters and dance moves.  We beat the gym balls using beaters in time to the music of Katy Perry’s ‘Firework’.  We followed the dance steps on the board to go along with the beat and the song.

Successful Learners – SQA Handling Data (Sweets)

The Transition class broke into their Hallowe’en stash early this week! They were Successful Learners when they categorised the tub of sweets to see how many of each they had.  We started off on the floor but Mr Nicoll suddenly remembered that he was old, so we made the final rows of sweets on the table. We discovered that the most common sweet was a refresher bar closely followed by parma violets (yuck!)

Producing a Sound SQA

The Beech class had a really fun morning experimenting with percussion instruments and playing along to a spooky Halloween song on the board.  We were confident individuals as we followed the music notes on the board and played our instruments at the right time by recognising our percussion symbol and playing our instrument when our symbol appeared on the board.

Successful Learners – SQA Recognising Character

The Transition class were Successful Learners when they completed some more work on their class book. Before the October holiday the class used tea to stain some fake fur to represent the first time we meet Iorek the bear and he is working in a factory. The class compared their dried fur to original fur to confirm it looked dirty enough! They added it to their physical description sheet where they had coloured Iorek using warm and cold colours.

We also looked at Lyra’s physical description and discovered that she wears denim and can be quite grubby. We got some old jeans and matched them to the character Lyra in our story.

The Transition class were Successful Learners when working on their SQA topic Recognising Character in Fiction. They class worked on physical descriptions of Iorek the Bear from ‘His Dark Materials’.  The class noticed that fur (fake of course) that we had was too clean compared to Iorek when we meet him for the first time. The class had lots of fun staining the fur with tea.

Confident Individuals – SQA Healthy Eating Planning

The Transition class were hard at work planning their Healthy Cooking SQA class for after the October Break. They were all Confident Individuals when they chose a local product (Eggs) and selected a local producer. They then identified healthy and non-healthy ways of preparing them. After the holidays the class will prepare the eggs in different ways for a photo shoot.
