Mental Health Week Scotland

Mental Health Week Scotland was a huge success at New Cumnock Primary School. We were fortunate to have had visiting specialists come and deliver sessions throughout the week to support this:

Pauline Auld from PA Dance Academy delivered dance sessions; Sharon McQuillan from ShapeShift Fitness Studio delivered Yoga & Mediation sessions; Gina Scott from Bunnylove brought her petting zoo; and James McDonald (Paddy), East Ayrshire’s Countryside Development Officer delivered learning activities in the Wildlife Garden, as well as land art and river dipping.

As well as this, the children took part in food preparation activities, nature walks to Knockshinnoch Lagoons, Art activities, class games, kindness activities, a movie session and a picnic in the playground afternoon.

During this time, the children have truly excelled, demonstrating a great understanding and engagement with the themes and activities presented. They enthusiastically participated in a variety of activities designed to support good mental health, showing a remarkable ability to connect with and benefit from each experience. Their proactive approach to learning strategies for self-help was particularly impressive, as they not only absorbed the information but also applied it in meaningful ways. The children’s ability to reflect on their mental well-being and that of their peers was evident, as they shared insights and supported each another throughout the week. Their exceeding expectations in this area is a testament to their maturity, empathy, and commitment to personal growth. We are incredibly proud of the children’s achievements during Mental Health Week Scotland and look forward to seeing them continue to thrive in all aspects of their learning journey.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who helped support or deliver these wonderful experiences for the children: parent helpers, visiting specialists and the hard work and dedication of all the school staff who continually strive to give our children a diverse variety of enriching learning experiences.

School Choir – Top 3 National Choral Festival

We are delighted to share the news that the choir has been placed in the top three in The Robert Burns World Federation Choral Competition this year.

This is a fantastic achievement, particularly as we were told that the standard of entries was exceptionally high.

The final results will be announced at the Primary Festival on Saturday 13th June 2026 at Clydeview Academy, Gourock.

The top three choir performances will be played throughout the day, with awards, certificates, and medals presented during the awards ceremony at approximately 3pm.

The winning choir performance will then be showcased following the results announcement.

I appreciate this is a long way to travel to collect a medal, however our choir children who were part of the recording, worked so hard in preparation for their competition entry and deserve to have the opportunity to collect their medal. They would be made most welcome if they were able to attend.

Please email me to make me aware if you intend to bring your child so I can make sure I look out for them on the day.

Kind regards,

Mrs McNulty

We couldn’t be more proud of Team New Cumnock today! ❤️

Each and every one of our pupils who represented the school at the Regional Ayrshire Burns Schools Competition is a superstar. The performances they gave in front of a large audience and the feedback from the judges on their adjudication sheets is testament to that.

We are delighted to be bringing home the following prizes:

1st place P1-3 Singing: Ruby Sh

3rd place P4/5 Singing: Megan M

1st place P4/5 Singing: Lexi B

2nd place P4/5 Verse Speaking: Stewart Y

1st place P4/5  Verse Speaking: Daisy M

3rd place P6/7  Singing: Arabella S

Isla M, Piper M and Chloe M were also in the top finalists of their Verse Speaking categories who had to compete again in a head to head and were awarded a  golden certificate.

Alice M was asked to perform her poem in front of the whole audience during the results segment of the day, as she entered the competition reciting a poem which was written by her Great Papa, who sadly passed away last year.

What a truly wonderful legacy he has left behind in his talented Great Granddaughter.

P6 Bikeability

Our Primary 6s have undergone their Bikeability Level 1 training.

We are extremely grateful to Courtney and Miss Nicholl for working with our young people to gain this award.

Bikeability Level 1 teaches us to:

  • Maintain our cycle: making sure our ride is in tip-top condition and make simple repairs
  • Glide: smooth, calm and collected
  • Control our bike: including setting off, cruising, slowing down, braking and stopping. (You’ll even learn to pedal one handed!)
  • Pedal: without feeling wobbly or out of control
  • Be aware of our surroundings: looking behind and turning around obstacles

New Cumnock Parish Church Burns Supper 31/1/26

Our very own Stewart Y, and his big sister Emma, who is also a former pupil of ours, performed at the New Cumnock Parish Church Burns Supper tonight.

Stewart gave a recitation of Willie Wastle and was given the important duty of addressing the haggis.

Both superstars wowed the room with their wonderful recitations! Well done Stewart and Emma!
