Inclusive Practice (Dyslexia Friendly Schools)

June 2021 – We achieved East Ayrshire’s Silver Award for Inclusive Practise (DFS)

This session we are working hard to ensure that DFS strategies are fully imbedded across the school. This will include:

  • Sharing our Strategy of the fortnight
  • Redesigning our logo/mascot
  • Organising our school library
  • Making use of learning aids in class
  • Updating our school display
  • Updating our school marking code

What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia Scotland defines dyslexia as “a continuum of difficulties in learning to read, write and/or spell, which persists despite the provision of appropriate learning opportunities. These difficulties often do not reflect an individual‘s cognitive abilities and may not be typical of performance in other areas” (Dyslexia Scotland 2011)

At New Cumnock Primary School we aim to support all learners and create a dyslexia friendly environment. Our flexible teaching and learning approaches will benefit all. Regular assessment and feedback allows staff to implement additional strategies for those who learn differently.

Classroom Learning

Each classroom is equipped with resources to suit the needs of each individual learning. For each learner, no journey is the same. We all can require different support and guidance which makes us all unique and special in our own ways.

Visual Timetable – every class has a visual timetable to help with routine and consistency. This includes picture and word cards arranged in an order of the school day.

Classroom resources – each class has a ‘Terrific Toolkit’ which containing resources such as ear defenders, number lines, highlighters and spelling aids. The variety allows children to learn with ease and confidence.
