Transition

Why transition?

Transition from the Early Childhood Centre to the School has developed excellent communication between both establishments and relationships between staff and children are well established prior to the ECC chidden starting Primary 1 in August.

Transition allows the following to happen:

  • Development of positive relationships between School Staff and ECC Staff
  • Development of positive relationships between School Staff and ECC Preschool Children
  • The ECC Preschool Children become familiar with the school building
  • Positive relationships are developed with ECC Preschool Children and their P6 Buddies

How does transition work at New Cumnock Primary School?

Our main transition program begins in October with the following structure occurring:

Every Friday afternoon (1:30 – 2:20), the ECC Preschool children come over to the School with ECC Staff to participate in various activities.

  • October to December– the ECC Preschool Children work with the current P1 children within the classroom to allow them to become familiar with the environment and staff.
  • January to April– the ECC Preschool Children work with their P6 Buddies in various activities to allow a positive relationship to occur.  They work together to create a puppet that the ECC children take home to share with family as a talking point about their buddy.
  • April to June– during this term, the ECC Preschool Children work again with the P1 children in a more structured approach – more running like the routine of the P1 classroom where they experience the idea of play and also sitting at the teaching table with the teacher for a short time.  Just drip feeding various routines that will be occurring when they come to school.

Other ways transition occurs:

The School and ECC have built an excellent relationship and throughout the year, both establishments invite each other to celebrate different occasions, here are some that we participate in.

  • Halloween – seeing the fantastic ECC Children and Staff in their costumes and singing songs
  • Christmas Nativities – both establishments are audiences for each others nativity dress rehearsals
  • P1 children go to cheer on the ECC Children at their Sports Day
  • Have fun in the playground together in the better weather.
