Goldilocks and the Three Bears at Dens Road

This week we have began looking at Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We are going to be doing a lot of our learning through bears and Goldilocks. First we had to listen to the story and we had to plan what we wanted to have in our home corner. We drew pictures and wrote down all the things we heard in the story that we would need.

Then we had to cut out pictures from the story and put them into order. We had to try and sound out the words to help us decided where our pictures would go.

We can practise putting the story in the correct order.

As part of our homework we had to draw the favourite part of the story.

Baby bear says "someone is in bed".

In the class we have a sorting activity where we have to read the words and organise the pictures.

Goldilocks sorting activity

At the writing table we have lots of different sheets to help us write about our topic.

Goldilocks is bad and cheeky.

In the class we are also starting one of our favourite activities. We have to Write the Room by going round the room and finding all the Goldilocks and the Three Bears words that are hidden.

Write the Room activity with our special pointing finger.

In the Active Learning Zone we are also learning about bears and Goldilocks. We have puppets at the puppet theatre, a Goldilocks mat and a beautiful Goldilocks at the BeeBot.  We also have a bear interest table and bear number games to play on the computer to help us with our numbers ( http://www.topmarks.co.uk/PlayPop.aspx?f=TeddyNumbersv2 ).

We also have a Wii now and are learning how to play Yogi Bear. We have to share with our friend and help each other when we get stuck.

Yogi Bear is on the Wii and we are ready to learn.

We  also have a Jellystone Park. Here we have to share with our friends and think about the kind of healthy food we would put in our picnic basket.

At the library area we have a Goldilocks book and Mrs Munro has recorded the story of Goldilocks onto the MP3 player. We can sit here and listen to the story.

Lastly we have our new Teddy Toy Shop. Here we are learning to recognise coins. We also have to remember to take turns so everyone can have a turn at being the shop keeper. We all like to be the shop keeper. We have lots of teddies for sale and have to remember to put the bar codes on our teddies before we put them on the shelf for sale.

Please leave a comment about our learning this week as we love to hear what you think.

We’ve had visitors!

Both P1a1 and P1a2 have had visitors to their classrooms! Read on to find out what has been happening…..

P1a1  – Tallulah the Toucan

One morning we came into school and Tallulah was there. We had left the window open overnight and she had flown in. She made her nest on the seat. She made her nest from the basket. Tallulah is a Toucan and she is from South America. She normally lives in a big hole in a tree in the rainforest. She has been playing in our classroom. She went in the sand pit, she played on the door, she flew up to the chinese lanterns and she was hanging on! Kayleigh made a post card for Tallulah. Dyaln wrote a story for Tallulah. Samuel drew a picture of Tallulah when she was in the rainforest. He found a song about Toucans on Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKkG8Xbb8Fc&feature=player_embedded All the class made words to describe Tallulah on Comic Life in the ICT suite. We are all loving having Tallulah in our classroom. Tallulah likes going on adventures and we think she might be going on one this weekend!

P1a2 – Idris the Dragon

We came into school one morning and we found Idris the Dragon. He is a boy dragon from Wales. He was sitting in his nest. When we first met him he was shy. He Put his head up and down because he was scared of us. He is a baby dragon and his is red and gold and green and yellow. He has wings and little spikes or prickles. He only breathes smoke because he is a baby but he is not allowed to breathe smoke in school because he will set the alarm off. He is only allowed to breathe smoke outside. He likes cuddling into his basket but when we are not in school he likes to fly about the class and play. He likes playing at the computer and in the school corner. Sometimes he flies out of school at night and comes back with things for his basket. He likes things that are gold and one day we came back to find lots of gold things there. He likes to go on lots of adventures and he is thinking of going to Africa! He might be going tonight! Miss Davies read us a story about dragons and we make postcards for Idris and write him letters and write stories about him. We have been drawing our own dragons too and thinking of words to describe them.

Old Toys and New Toys

In the Active Learning Zone this week we have been learning about Old Toys and New Toys. This has been helping us learn about in the past as our school is 100 years old. We have lots of different areas where we can choose to learn. At the computer area we have been sorting old toys and new toys. Try out the game here. http://www.museumeducation.bedford.gov.uk/bedfordbytes/toys/describing_toys.htm

At the writing table we have been using lots of different things to help us write. At school 100 years ago the boys and girls used a blackboard called a slate and chalk. We use lots of things but we especially like using the whiteboards and pens and we even use Pictochat on the Nintendo DS.

A long time ago children used to play with a dolls house. We still love playing with the dolls house. We are learning to be friends with each other by being nice and sharing.

We have a railway area wih two railways. A wooden railway like the boys and girls used to play with a long time ago and a battery operated railway that makes great noises and stops and starts when you press the buttons.

When our school first opened  boys and girls were just beginning to play with teddy bears. We have a teddy bear picnic area where we can play with the bears and share and take turns with our friends.

In the library we have story books. Some children would have been lucky enought to have books to read. In our story corner we also have MP3 players to listen to stories.

When we are in the Active Learning Zone we use cameras and microphones to record our learning. We take photos to show we have been busy, recording our learning and sharing it with the other children.

Please leave a comment  to let us know what toy you liked to play with when you were young.

Glow Meet with Manfred the Baddie

Another busy week in P1! Song practise continues for the Sleepy Shepherd Christmas show.

We are learning to-

  • recognise shapes and make pictures with them
  • write an invitation
  • sing our Sleepy Shepherd songs

Our main focus this week has been preparing for the Christmas Fayre next Friday. We have made lots of lovely things for parents to buy for Christmas.  We have made Snowflake Candle Holders, Jewelled Photoframes (watch out for the special surprise inside them!) and painted Trinket Boxes. We will also be finishing off mugs with special photographs as well.

We also made invitations to give to someone to come to the Christmas Fayre on Friday 3rd December.

We have been working hard with our blending. Spelling three letter words and trying to sound out words. We have been reading our Oxford Reading Tree books too.

In maths we have been learning about shapes. We made pictures of houses and people with 2D shapes. Lots of us went to the making table to draw and cut out shapes and make more pictures.

P1 children across Scotland will be getting a book called ‘Manfred the Baddie’ from the Scottish Book Trust and a message from Bookbug. This year’s chosen book was written and illustrated by John Fardell and won the 0-7 age category of the Royal Mail Awards for Scottish Children’s Books.

On Thursday John Fardell held a ‘Glow Meet’ session with lots of P1 children across Scotland to tell them all about the book. We took part in the Glow Meet (video conferencing) and watched as John told us the story and showed us his illustrations. It was very exciting and Mrs Mackay even left a message! John also showed us how he drew his character, Manfred and we drew some ‘BADDIES’ of our own!

Our Active Learning Zone is changing. Mrs Munro was very busy on Friday afternoon moving things about and there are lots of new things to try out. Watch this space to find out what our next story will be and what we will get up to!

The Gruffalo – Characters

We have been studying the Gruffalo even more. We have looked at all the things that make him a good character. We looked at the book and remembered his purple prickles, terrible teeth in his terrible jaw and his black tongue. We has to make our own character and had to think of lots of things it would need. Look at our pictures of our drawings.

We have been practising our Jolly Phonics sounds and trying to blend them together to read and write three letter words. We have been looking at our Oxford Reading Tree books and trying to perdict what will happen next in our stories.

In maths we have been continuing to look at pictograms. We made pictograms of fruit and we knew which fruit was the most popular. We also have been working with size. We looked at the characters from our Gruffalo story and thought about which was the tallest, shortest and narrowest. We used the Active Expressions to help us record our answers. We had to think about how the characters made us feel and we also had to choose our most favourite character in the story. Here are the results from our voting.

We have been learning songs for our Chirstmas Show, The Sleepy Shepherd. We have been using our super singing voices. Watch out for more information coming soon.

Please remember to leave a comment. The children have been so excited to read your comments about their learning.

Baxter Park and Halloween

What a week we have had!

On Monday we had our visit to Baxter Park to look for the signs of Autumn. We collected leaves, conkers and fir cones and brought them back to school to have a closer look. We recorded, using an Easi-speak microphone, our feet crunching in the leaves. We also took lots of photos using our digital camera.

We have been using Halloween to help us with our writing. We made spells in the water tray with jelly, we found spiders in the cornflour in our cauldron. Lastly we had to make up our own spells. We drew pictures of different things we would like to put in our spells and each class made a spell book.

In ICT we used Pivot for the first time. We made little animations by making the stickman move about and took pictures of him. We also changed his colour too.

You can download Pivot free of charge as it’s a bit of freeware. You can find the download here…

ICT

Hello everyone!

We have had a busy learning our new sounds, g, l and o. We have been continuing to practise all our sounds. Playing with making their shapes with play dough, singing our Jolly Phonics songs on the karaoke machine and writing our sounds on the whiteboards and pens at the writing table.

In maths we have been learning about making patterns. We have used beads to make patterns with two colours and practising these at our numeracy table during activities. We have made pictures with sticky paper and have used colours and shapes to make the patterns.  We remember to use the digital camera to take photographs when we have completed a pattern.

We have been creating brilliant models at the bricks. We have used our imagination and created buildings, mosques and castles. Next week we will be using the bricks to build a town for our railway.

This was our first week in the ICT suite. We used a program called Textease Paint. We have been talking about ourselves in school and drew pictures of our faces. We thought about the colour of our eyes and our hair. Look out for a letter home next week as at Dens Road we have the Softease Community at Home licence and you will receive the download URL and password for use of Textease at home.
