We read a story and everyone fell asleep for 100 years!

This has been our first full week of part time P1 and we are all feeling pretty tired but not as tired as Sleeping Beauty! This week  we started our new topic of Sleeping Beauty. We read three stories and they all had the same title of Sleeping Beauty on the the cover but we noticed that the illustrator was different on each one and the story was a little different too. We discovered that the first story had a forest grow up around the castle, the next story had thorny bushes grow up all around the castle and the third story was very special because even though its title was  Sleeping Beauty, it had Biff, Chip, Kipper, their Dad and their friend Wilma in it! We had to put our ‘thinking hats’ on  and talked with our teachers about the similarities and differences- they were very impressed with us!

We are still counting our days at school every morning and some of us are getting very good at talking about the numbers that are before and after the number we are putting up. We were amazed to see that wewhen we counted our number on Friday morning we had been at school for 9 days! We checked it against our rabbit number line ( they bring us a carrot for every day we are at school) and it was right!! We are also getting very good at moving the hand on our classroom clock to show what activities we are working on. We like looking at it in the morning when we come in because it helps us to know what we are doing and we can talk about the exciting things we will be doing. Our teacher, Mrs Mackay, says it is helping us learn about time too even though there are no numbers on the clock but we are sure that we will find out more about that soon.

Ms Gauld. our Healthy Eating Assistant, came to visit our class this week. She told us how to wash our hands properly to stay healthy. We were very good at listening to her and giving her ideas of when and why we should we wash our hands. We decided that there were five times we must wash our hands;

  1. After we go to the toilet.
  2. Before we eat anything.
  3. After we have touched an animal, even our pets.
  4. After we cough or sneeze.
  5. After we have been playing outside.

After we made our list Ms Gauld introduced us to Handy. He was a Hand Washing Helper and he told us if our list was right- and it was! He showed us what to do and what we would need, just like Ms Gauld and he even taught us a hand washing song. After that we all had a practise and Ms Gauld and Mrs Mackay said we were good enough that we could get one Handys special stickers!

We have been learning even more sounds this week. This week we learnt p, i and n and in the active learning zone and the classroom we have been practising using them to make words, finding them in words and writing them. We are getting really good and we even took our sound books home as part of our homework this week so that we can teach our families the sounds, their actions and their songs. We have also been enjoying using the iPad to play games all about our sounds.

In the Active Learning Zone there have been lots of new areas to investigate and learn in. One of our favourites this week has been the science table. We have been investigating different objects and shiny things. We know what to do when we are there because Walt is there to tell us what we are learning.

All through the week we have all had a shot at playing a really fun game called PIPs. It helps our teachers see what we know and we all thought it was lots of fun! We had to do some counting, say what some sounds were, find some items in a picture and lots more fun things!

Our project is Sleeping Beauty.

This week we will be learning the Swahili  song Jambo so that we can sing it for our visitors next month.

We can see the light- it’s a torch!

Woweee! What an amazing week for us and the whole of Dundee – The Olympic Torch came to visit as part of it’s relay race across Great Britain! We were all very excited and lots of us even went to see it in the park and along the streets. For homework we had to talk to our families about what we know about the Olympics and also what we wanted to know.

Each day we count down the days until the London 2012 Olympics and we  follow the torch by putting its picture on  a map to show us where it was. We were so happy that on day 25 it came to Dundee.

http://www.london2012.com/torch-relay/video/video=torch-relay-day25.html

This week to celebrate such a special event we decided that the best thing we could do was join in with all of the celebrations and have our own Olympic Torch Relay.  We decided that to have a torch relay we would all need a torch so our teachers set us the task of designing our own torch to hold our ‘faux’ Olympic  flame. We had to think of how to make a shape with the card that would hold the flame safely and that would show people the 2012 logo. They were all fabulous and we were amazed at how different each one was.

Once we had all designed our torches we went outside for our race. we used the very long playground at the front of our school and we passed the torch around. We had been learning that this has a special name. When the special flame from the Olympic Gods is passed from one torch to the next the torches have to touch together at the top. This is called a ‘kiss’.

When we had passed the flame on from our torch we joined the race and supported the next torch bearer. It was great fun and we were really pleased that we even got a special Olympic London 2012 certificate too!

In the Active Learning Zone we have also been finding out where the torch has been going by using a GIANT map and our Torch beebots. We have to think about where the torch goes to and see if we can guide the Torch Beebot to it. It was lots of fun exploring where in Great Britain we know or could find with support.

We have also been learning all about the Olympics and ordinal numbers by using the Wii and the London 2012 Game. We have only been looking at the running but we are doing very well at it. We have to use a timer to make sure that all of our friends can have a go and share the fun. When the race ends we have to look at who came first, second or third and then we put our medal on the chart. We even get a sticker which some of us have been putting in our wider achievements section of our folios.

We are learning all about plants and  this week and we have been planting cress. We had to think very carefully about what equipment we would need and then how we would plant our seed. It was very  interesting and lots of us were able to share what we had been learning in nursery, what we had written in our plan and use that to help us think and decide. We even wrote a set of instructions to help people who visit our ‘garden’ and ‘garden centres’  and we are going to put them all into a book to help new gardeners plant seeds successfully. We have been using our thinking flowers to help us think about our learning

We have been measuring lots and lots this week. We had to measure different leaves and then Jack was very kind and let us borrow his Beanstalk garden  and measure all the beanstalks which have been growing there. It was tricky because some of us had to estimate and measure. We learned that when you estimate you have to make a sensible guess before you measure. On Thursday we all brought things in from home and we estimated and measured them. Then we shared our object or toy with our friends to let them do the same. We all brought really good measuring objects in, there was even a Slinky which was long and short! We used our thinking flowers and triangle again and it helped us talk lots about measure.

We are still enjoying hearing and learning all about Jack and the Beanstalk and this week we looked at scenes form different books and we had to highlight where the characters were speaking. We have been learning that speech marks open and close to show when someone starts and stops speaking. We all used the Promethean Board to highlight some pages from books which we had already read and then we got a sheet from a book we had not read. Some of us had to highlight what the different charachters said in different colours and some of us had to highlight any speech using just one colour. It was quite hard but we all got there in the end.

Lastly we are still getting some super homework from our classmates. This week Tallulah has been very excited as two of the pieces of homework have been about her! Aiden made a mask and picture with his family. We all agreed that they were SUPER!

We would love it if you want to have a look and comment on the work that the nursery boys and girls have been doing. We share our Active Learning Zone with them on a Tuesday and Friday because we are getting so big that we are nearly in P2 and they are nearly in P1!

Also, please tie up long hair. Thank you. Gym bags will be sent home this week as there is no gym next week.

Our topic is all about Jack and the Beanstalk, Growing Plants and the Olympics.

News Alert – Primary One are Authors!

There has been alot of excitement in primary one because we are writing our own book! We have been thinking very carefully about all of the different things we have learnt over the past term and our teachers were really amazed! WE KNOW LOTS!!!!! First of all we made a flipchart on the computer and gave each subject a page of its own then we gave each page a title. Next, we looked at what facts the readers would want to know about all of the areas in the book – that was tricky because we know so much! After that we designed the title cards and illustrations for our book. We wrote a blurb which is very important beacuse it is how you know if you will like a book and tells you what it is about. We still have to make our contents page and our covers but we have a great title for our book and can’t wait to make them next week and publish it- we are sure that it will be a best seller!

In the Active Learning Zone we have been wowing our teachers with how good we are at reading and using the iPad. We have been using an app called QuickQuote and we have read stories all by ourself recorded them on one for our iPads. We hope to have them here for you to listen to soon because they are really good.

Week Starting 19th March 2012

  • P1a1 have music on Thursday afternoon.
  • Book bags will go out on Friday this week, please read with your child and return it with them on Monday morning.

On the day your child has gym, please ensure they have no jewellery and long hair should be tied up.

Please remember to return your child’s summer trip and theatre trip letters as soon as a possible.

Please send in your child’s Fruit Money in a named envelope £2.60 until the Easter Holiday. Thank you to those who have already paid.

Next week we will be making our space book and exploring our local area.

Pets and Plants

We have been using the Promethean Whiteboard to help us add. We drag on the fish and add them to see how many altogether.

We have been playing a matching game about animals and their homes. We are still enjoying learning about rhyming and we all played this rhyming game were animals lived in a rhyming place – the toad lived on the road and the duck lived in a truck.

We wrote instructions on how to plant a seed. We had practise doing this in the compost tray and we all planted our own Sunflower seeds. Our sunflowers are starting to grow … Some are really tall but others are just little shoots.

We are still enjoying the garden centre and Dominika and Maja have been labelling and pricing things.

We have been reading books by Judith kerr but these are our favourite two.

We have been learning how o care for our pets and we are taking turns to feed Daisy and Rocky.

Here is the playdough models Sean made. He made an ant, a centipede, a caterpillar and a flat worm. Mrs Mackays favourite is the Centipede.

Remember!!!

Next week is our Goldilocks and the Three Bears Assembly on Tuesday 14th June at 9.30am. Parents are invited so please come along and see us!

We are learning about Plants and Animals

We started this week by finishing off lots of experiments. We had to use our senses to taste different crisps and decide what flavour they were. But Miss Davies and Mrs Mackay hid the packets they came from so we didn’t know what flavours they were. We filled in a sheet to record our experiment. Then we did a smelling experiment. We had to guess what will hidden in the cup. We recorded our findings for this experiment too.

This week we are learning about Plants and Animals. In the classrooms we have a vet and a garden centre. We have compost in the sand tray so we can practise planting. We did a mind map for our areas to help us decide what we need.

Our Garden Centers have needed a lot of work. We needed to made signs and put up lots of flowers. We have a cutting activity where we have to use catalogues to cut out things for our garden to help us design it. We all like the sheds and swimming pools.

In our water trays we have a pretend frog pond. It had pretend frogs and tadpoles that help us to play and learn about the life cycle of a frog. Try out this website.

We have been listening to lots of stories about animals too.

P1a1 are very lucky because they have two new class pets. They are goldfish. A gold one and a black one. The class voted on names for them and decided on Daisy and Rocky. We are looking forward to caring for them.

In Mrs Munro’s Learning Zone we have a pet shop and an X Box Kinect with Kinectimals game. We all got the meet the five cubs who are in the game and used the Active Expressions to vote on who our favourite cub is. We choose the black panther to be our P1 cub. Watch out for more information about what we get up to with him as we play and care for him.
