SOUND READING SYSTEM
At Grange we use SRS to teach reading, spelling and writing. It was introduced as an intervention and piloted in Grange in 2018 and has been developed into a whole school programme and is used across Angus.

WRITING
Writing in the early years focusses on letter formation and links in with our reading. We also start to talk about and use the description bubble to develop skills of vocabulary used to describe something.
Here is video to explain this a bit further:
In P1&2 we use a pedagogy called “Talk for Writing” and believe that if you can talk about it then you can write about it.
Here is a a video to explain how Talk for Writing works to support learning at home:
In P3&4, writing development continues to develop the skills of writing that include grammar and punctuation and spelling. This is call the National Improvement Framework for Writing. Children complete a “cold task” and through this areas of development are identified and worked on as a class through our class work such as work on writing in “Daily 5”. We then plan our writing before we put pen to paper. We then complete a “hot task” and compare to our cold task to see the progress wee have made. Class progress is made visual so children can see the progress and work collaboratively to then identify their next area for development. We cover various text types over the year that are linked to our topic learning to provide relevance and engagement to our writing.
In P5-7, writing development follows the Explicitly Teaching Writing pedagogy being taught the skills in writing different text types / genres. Our Learning ladders encompass the success criteria from Stephen Graham with elements from our BIG Writing that we at Grange feel are missing.
