Electricity and Engineering

Endeavour is a long term project which you can pick your endeavour topic. At the end you must present your endeavour to other people. My endeavour is electricity and I have learnt new skills and have achieved lots.

I feel like I didn’t work hard enough because I was off track when I was doing endeavour and I usually chatted with other people and checked out their endeavours. I learnt the speed of electricity. I learnt what makes electricity and I learnt other ways of making an electrical circuit than the basic circuit building The problems I had where that I constantly needed help from teachers and also had to be watched when I soldered. The skills I learnt were better time management and better presentation skills. The people who helped me were Mrs Clark, Mrs Macmillan and Mr Kitching. I am most proud of my soldered kit as it took about an hour or two to complete. The hardest part of my endeavour was when I had to use the soldering kit and to actually not struggle you had to have a very still hand.

Bath and Beauty

For my Endeavour topic I did Beauty and Bath. Endeavour is a long term personal project where you get to choose something to do that you might not be good at or might have never did before. In Endeavour you don’t pick something that is easy or hard you pick something that you will find problems to overcome and maybe a wee bit challenging. Because I was doing Beauty and Bath I decided to make Bath bombs. I chose to make bath bombs over anything else to do with beauty and bath because when I was little I always loved getting bath bombs from different stores like Lush so I wanted to make them for everyone to buy at the Endeavour fair.
When I was making my bath bombs my mum helped me because I was needing someone to help film the video I made on how to make bath bombs, making sure that I was measuring everything correctly and to make sure nothing went wrong. A funny thing/problem that happened while I was making my bath bombs was that when I was making my first set I put too much food colouring into the mixture and they kept on swelling and swelling until they turned into the shape of cakes!
The skills I learned  was being able to space out everything I did, being able to be patient, overcoming challenges like the bath bombs that turned out like cakes, making a questionnaire on excel and making bath bombs. The main thing I achieved was having time to do everything and getting on with work even though I could of did more stuff if I focused at the start of the year. My endeavour was ambitious because I had never did bath bomb making but during the end of the year I felt like I had achieved a huge amount of things. I also feel very proud of my endeavour this year because this was my first year doing endeavour so that means that everyone else has had a head start and knew what was expected to happen. This means that hopefully I can do even better next year for endeavour.  See my video below.

Animation Endeavour By Sophie

Every Wednesday in the afternoon we do endeavour, endeavour is when you chose a topic to learn about and present stuff at the endeavour. For my endeavour I chose animations. I chose animations because as a kid I loved watching cartoons, my favourite was probably morph. Morph was a guy made out of clay that did silly things like annoy his friends and that kind of stuff, the cartoon morph was an animation!

At the endeavour fair I presented my Lego animation that I made for rejig, the animation was about how people drop litter on the beach and how they don’t think about what it can effect. The skills I learned while doing my endeavour was patience, time management and learning to use imotion. Imotion is the app I used to make my animations.

During my endeavour I learned that no matter how hard you try in your endeavour, you will still make mistakes. I made a lot of mistakes in my animations like; my hand getting in the way or the camera moving out of place or that I moved the character in the animation too far. Making animations is actually very stressful!

The problems I had to overcome was iPad glitches or that the animation was too short or something like that. Animations was a new learning for me because I had never made Animations before and I had never made animation be for either. It was a bit tricky at first but I got there in the end.

The person that helped me with my endeavour was Mrs Clark, she taught me how to make animations and how to keep the camera steady, and she also showed me how to get good lighting so thank you Mrs Clark! I shared my learning by putting my animation on a key and they I put it on the screen at the endeavour fair with a lode of other amazing videos. For people that do endeavour next year I just want to say whatever you chose you need to make it interesting or else it won’t be as good as an endeavour project that you will enjoy! Good luck to people next year!

Endeavour Review by Matthew

Endeavour is a long term project that you get to choose what we do and we have to complete a project and I done comics for my endeavour I found it hard because I was not the best at drawing but now I would say I am decent at drawing now that I have been practising.

I found thinking of the comics hard because I couldn’t think imaginatively easily and now that I think about it it seems easy now when I don’t think about it and I also I found drawing the comics hard because I was not that good at drawing but now I am quite good at it now. I think this was quite out of my comfort zone. I also learned how to use a photo copier. Mrs Clark helped me by letting me use an online comic generator

Endeavour Review

Endeavour is a long-term personal topic where everyone in P5/6/7 gets to pick his or her own project. The project has to be ambitious. Endeavour lasts from Christmas to July. My Endeavour was on giant pandas because for my birthday I adopted a panda.

My Endeavour was ambitious because I didn’t know much about giant pandas so I had to learn a lot and do a lot of research.

During my Endeavour I had to get people to help me but I did a lot by myself, I got help from the WWF and Edinburgh Zoo because they gave me a lot of information that I couldn’t find on the internet. The people that helped me were my dad, my mum, Mrs Clark, WWF, Edinburgh Zoo and National Geographic.

For my Endeavour I achieved a sway, an enclosure, a poster, a quiz, description for my enclosure, Chinese Calligraphy, annotated picture of giant panda and a panda cupcake fundraiser. The things I have learned are facts about giant pandas, how to write giant panda in Chinese calligraphy, how to draw giant pandas and skills. The skills I have learned during Endeavour are time management and organisation.

During Endeavour everyone had to overcome problems I had to overcome quite a few problems. My problems were when I had to make my enclosure, my picture, my poster and my quiz. When I was making my enclosure at first I had made it out of a cardboard type thing and the fence was made out of Popsicle sticks and they kept falling over. To fix my problem I re made my enclosure out of wood. My second problem was with my panda picture because when I first attempted it it didn’t work out. My poster problem was that I had completed my poster but then I had facts that weren’t accurate so I had to re do my poster. My final problem was with my quiz the problem was that I had done my quiz on my computer at home but my computer wouldn’t print so I had to re do it at school and print it off.

The thing I found the most difficult was my enclosure because it didn’t work out and it took a very long time.  I will try something more challenging next year.

Endeavour Project Review by Jack

Endeavour is a long term project when you get to pick your own project. At the end of the project you have to present your learning in front of not only the school but parents as well. For my Endeavour I am doing golf and I have learned new skills and have achieved lots.

I felt that I could have achieved more for my Endeavour because of the time that you had to achieve stuff. The thing that I’m most happy about is my model that I made of a golf hole. I annotated it to show where the parts are and what they are used for and what clubs are used there. I painted it to show where the different places are, like the colour of grass on the fairway and the ruff. I also made a quiz for people to do and I brought in a mini golf hole with a golf club for people to play. One of the skills that I have learnt was model making once I was making my model, I think this will help in the future in school once we are doing topics or even in my future of Endeavour. Another one of my skills was quiz making, this will help me when we are going quizzes for homework. The last skill was getting better at golf, now I can go down to the golf course with my dad or even play in the young competitions. I have learnt how to play golf and what is golf. I also learnt how to get better at time management because everything was finished that I wanted finished.

The problems that I had to overcome is that I had to change my planning because I wouldn’t have enough time to do it. I also didn’t know when to start my golf hole and when to finish but my time management was good. My topic was ambitious because I had to make a model that was planned by myself so it was hard to copy.

The people that helped me was my uncle who sent me a reply and he works at the golf course as a greenkeeper on Islay. Gregor also helped me paint the model the same as Mrs Macmillan.

Endeavour is a long term project when you get to pick your own thing to work on the whole year. At the end of the year you show it to the whole school and adults.

P7 LEAVERS

Every year, P7s from every school present and talk about all of their memories and experiences that they had. To present this, they think of wacky, funny ways to present it to their teacher and parents at the end of the school year. Port Ellen are doing a leavers that includes memories and photos of them when they were little, a lip dub containing the song “We Are The Champions,” and also videos that describes what we want to be when we are older. There were also voiceovers of us thanking our teachers and displaying photos of when we were younger.

The theme of our leavers is growing up, and at the start and the end we sing two different songs, Count on me by Bruno Mars, and Can’t Stop The Feeling by Justin Timberlake.

I am really excited for leaving school and make a new start in High School and to make new friends.

High School

All the p7 on Islay and Jura came to high school for transition days. On Thursday we had to go on the groups that were picked on Wednesday which were MW and BM.  There was three house Bryce Winnard & McBean.  For lunch we had a choice of what to eat for example; chicken burgers, hot dogs, macaroni cheese and lots more. We had lots of periods most of them were just us inducing to our teacher. Unfortunately our Gaelic teacher Mr Bond is not going to be there when we go to high school because were getting another Gaelic teacher.  At lunch there was the boys and girls football club and we picked teams and started playing football against each other. We also did P.E with Miss Gibson.

My Endeavour Rowan

When you go into p5/6/7 you do endeavour. Endeavour is a long term project that lasts from December to June. When you do endeavour it has to be something you have never done before and it has to be ambitious. This year my endeavour was magic. My endeavour was ambitious because I doing magic is a really big push and you need to be very patient and I have never done magic before and I wanted to try it out. I chose magic because I have seen my dad going around the house doing his magic and I want to be like him one day. Also I have seen dynamo on the TV and I have always wondered how you do the magic tricks so I decided to give it a go. Throughout this endeavour I have achieved lots of things, developed new skills, I learned new things, I had to overcome problems, get help and then I shared my learning with the rest of the school and some of their parents.

For this endeavour I have achieved lots of things like learning eight tricks, a sway about famous magicians and some from the past, a magic show for the nursery, a poster about different types of magic on them, and I did a magic trick on the laptop and in that movie I was through the monitor reading people’s minds. I also developed new skills throughout endeavour. One of the skills I developed was being patient when learning the tricks because you won’t just learn the trick in a night you will have to be patient and keep on practicing, I also had to manage my time well because sometimes you set yourself to much and you don’t have time to do it all but make sure you set yourself a reasonable amount to do and I had to be organised as well I had to be organised because I had to remember all of my things to learn my magic with.

Also when you do endeavour you will have problem you had to overcome. One of my problems with my endeavour is learning the tricks and getting them perfect, another problem that happened throughout my endeavour was being organised because I mostly forgot all of my magic tricks. When you do your endeavour you write to someone that knows things about your endeavour. This year I wrote to Dynamo and so far he has not sent a letter back. I also got help from my dad he has taught me all of the sneaky trick when you are doing the tricks and he helped me learn the magic tricks. My mum also helped me with the posters and putting on the QR code they have been very helpful.

When everyone has finished their endeavour at the start of June all of our mum’s and dad’s will come in and sees your endeavour and other people’s endeavours. I had lots of things to show at the endeavour fair. At the endeavour fair I thought that my endeavour was good and I think that some people liked that video that I made. Most of family came in to see my endeavour and I think they thought it was a good endeavour fair. I thought that there was a lot of good endeavours there and soon enough I wat to be as good as my dad at magic and as good as dynamo. Some day! Here is a little bit of advice for you don’t do something to difficult, don’t expect yourself to get lots done and do well!

Our Endeavour Fair

On Monday 19th June P567 gathered up all their Endeavour and set them up down stairs for parents and people to come up and see what we have learned. Most people had really different projects but some people have similar projects.

A lot of people had some kind of  interaction with the audience that was there like word searches or some people had brought in what they made like a golf hole to try or beauty products.

Many people of everyones family and friends turned up to see everyones Endeavour and its good to see how many people came

Port Ellen And Bowmore Beach Day

On Friday 23rd June Port Ellen and Bommore had a beach day down at the White Hart beach.  It was the whole school from each school.  When we got there we all mixed in with each other.

In the afternoon we went to get our lunch. Then we had to do a sand castle competition, but a castle didn’t win, the wining group made a boat.  There were two boats but the one that won had a dolphin in it.

We had a match of football and rounders. In the rounders we did mixed teams, but in the football we did Port Ellen VS Bommore and Port Ellen won by one goal.

It was a great and a very fun day.

Sports day 2017

On Monday the 19th of june 2017 port Ellen Primary held their sports day. It had been canceled 3 times before and then it finally managed to get it on. There was lots of fun events for the little and older children. But the most important event was the decider for the sports championships, it was the hundred metre sprint. It was the decider for the boys but it wasnt the decider for girls. Sports day is always a fantastic fun day. This year it was really close for the boys championships. There was only 25 points in it and when it came down to the sprint Ruaridh beat the leader by hardly anything and they tied overall. All the little ones love sports day they have a blast every year and they will always have fun then it came the prize giving. For boys it was 3rd Andre Cruz Second Darren Hamilton 1st Ruaraidh Macdonald and Struan Colthart. For the girls 3rd Lauren Macdonald 2nd Natalie Logan and Eva Munro 1st Sophie Macdonald. Now they sat down and everyone will have a blast next year.

1st Induction Day At Islay High School

On Wednesday 21st of June Primary 7’s from all round Islay and Jura went for their very first induction day to Islay High School. We had to get the bus over to Bowmore at 8:18. We had to go into the hall to find out our houses. The McBeans from Port Ellen Primary are Natalie Logan, Ruaraidh Macdonald and Eva Munro. The Bryce’s from Port Ellen Primary are Struan Coltart, Darren Hamilton and Kaya Middleton. The Winnards from Port Ellen Primary are Kaitlyn Clarke, André Cruz and Ellie Mackie.

After that we got to write out our timetable. This year our classes have been split so there is a 1BM class, which is half of McBean and the whole of Bryce. There is also 1WM class, which is the rest of McBean and the whole of Winnard. We had the senior children help us around the high school to take us to our classes. We got showed what classes we would be tacking after the summer, and we also got a little taster of what we would be doing after the summer. 1MB get different teachers form 1WM, which was quite different because we always got to have the same teachers.

I really enjoyed High School and was quite sad to have to come back to Primary School but I am really looking forward to going to Islay High School after the summer.

Games Design Endeavour 2017

Endeavour review

For endeavour I am doing Kodu lab game. Endeavour is an ambitious project which you have to complete in a few months and then you demonstrate it at the endeavour fair.

Kodu is a game which gives you tools which allow you to make your own game. I made 11 levels and 8 children came and 3 adults came too.

I think I did well because I managed to the time and all my levels were completed.  What I need to do next time is to be more specific on what to do in the levels and I need to make the levels easier.

In endeavour here are the skills I learnt: How to work independently, How to code a successful Kodu game, How to show what I have accomplished/achieved and how to effectively gather facts.

I hope to be able to use the information I learnt to code in a computer programming/coding company when I grow up.

A problem I had to overcome is when I didn’t know what to do for the levels but I overcame it by asking other people on what I should do.

My project was ambitious because I wanted to be able to create better Kodu games and to have knowledge of coding.

I shared my learning by writing down facts which people could read and by creating a playable game.

Mrs. Clark helped me by showing how do code and my friends helped me by giving me level ideas.

Picnic Lunch

On Tuesday 27th we had a picnic lunch to celebrate us winning the STEM awards, we got told there would be a surprise at the end so we were all very excited. When everyone got downstairs there was music playing and everyone was dancing around, they all looked very happy. There was cakes and sandwiches. We all then got told to look out the door and listen. We then seen and heard the ice cream van, we were all very surprised. Everybody got a free ice cream. We went outside for a break and to eat our ice cream, when the bell rang everyone went into the hall and we watched Sing the movie. At the end of the day everyone was really happy.

High School Problem Solving

On Tuesday 20th June all of the p7’s and S1’s joined together to do a problem solving morning in the high school. We had to go round to different stations and complete lots of different challenges. After we have completed the challenges we have to get a mark form the older people that were at each station. We had to get either a mark of 0,5 or 10. You got a 10 if you figured out the answer to the problem and got it right. You got a 5 if you nearly got it and had good teamwork and talking and you got a 0 if you didn’t work together and didn’t get the answer. I enjoyed doing this because it made us think about lots of different types of questions and how to work them out. It was also good fun because it was like an early induction day and we got to meet and talk to lots of people who we will go to high school with. Doing this challenge we did numeracy and literacy. My team won the numeracy and the overall points. I think everyone enjoyed those tasks and had lots of fun.

Sports Day 2017

After several cancellations, the Port Ellen Sports Day finally went ahead! The races were hotly contested from start to finish, with Texa finally coming out overall winners. Well done to Sophie for winning the Girls Championship and Struan and Ruaraidh jointly claiming the boys title. Many thanks to Donnie MacDonald, a past Championship winner, for presenting the prizes. Take a look at the slideshow below!

Scottish Education STEM award winners!

On Wednesday 8th June, two members of staff and three pupils from Port Ellen Primary flew to Glasgow to attend the Scottish Education Awards. The school had got through to the finals of the Science, Technologies, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Award along with another primary school and a high school. Assessors visited the school back in March to see STEM activities in class, speak to children about their experience of STEM learning and talk to staff about the development of STEM in Port Ellen.

Charlet Rose Munro, Rowan Morris and Natalie Logan were very excited to attend such a large event………and we were all even more surprised to be announced winners! The award was sponsored by BAE systems and the presenter told the girls that he was very happy to see girls being so keen on science and engineering and that he hoped he might see some of them working for the company in the future. It is predicted that the UK will have a huge shortage of scientists and engineers in the near future.

This award reflects a high level of commitment to STEM learning throughout the school, from Pre-5 to P7. We all feel that encouraging children to be curious about the world around them leads to high levels of engagement in learning and that STEM subjects promote creativity, problem solving, co-operation, resilience and reflection. The school was recognized as having ‘an adaptable and resourceful teaching team who makes best use of the local environment and technology……..and that by engaging in partnerships, the school supports and extends the development of skills for life, learning and work.’ We are all very chuffed to have achieved this recognition.

Sports Champions

On Thursday 8th June sports day will be held at Port Ellen Primary School.  For the sports championships we have/will be doing cross country, distance throw, football dribble, long jump, baskets, obstacle course, high jump, hurdles and on the day of sports day we will be doing 100m sprint. We are doing sports championships because we like to have fun, enjoy ourselves and to play sports to get fitter. We also have trophy’s and medals that people win for coming 1st, 2nd or 3rd. When you do the activities you get points, 1st=100 points, 2nd=75 points, 3rd=50 taking part=25 points.

Port Ellen Primary School Tapestry Time Line

On Thursday 18th May Port Ellen primary made a timeline out of tapestries. It was right from the Mesolithic times to WWII.  Some of the timelines we made were The Battle of Trigh Guniart, Port Ellen in 1820s, Kildalton Cross, Finlaggan, Higland Clearenses, WW11 Boat Planes, Tuscania and Kilbride Chapel. Everyone in the school took part, with help from the Islay Quilters and other members of the local community and some people made a banner for the Feis as well. A lot of the tapestries are for monuments in the past and the timeline will help us remember our history.

Animations For Primary 7 Leavers Assembly

The primary 7s at Port Ellen Primary will be going to High School soon and every year when primary sevens leave the class P5/6/7 help make a video to show on the last week of school about the Primary sevens. This year we have included animations to go with the poem “If” by Rudyard Kipling. Everyone in the class created a short animation to go with a line from the poem. To create an animation we used IMotion. We had to make sure that the animations went with the line of the poem we had picked. The animations took a long time because you take a photo of something then you have to move it a little bit more then it keeps going like that.  We hope you like the finished movie.

Port Ellen Community Festival

On Friday 26th may in port Ellen at the co-op beach there was a community festival. They were selling cakes, drinks and toys. Up to a certain time the burgers and drinks were free however eventually the burgers and drinks were £2.50. All the stores were giant tents and they were constantly crowded.

Most of the people from the school were there and people from all over Islay where there too. More than one hundred people were just wandering around, either playing on the beach or talking. There was about 5 people running each store and they were constantly busy.

Some people were sitting down on the beach however no one went too close too the water as everyone wanted to buy something when the lines went down. The toy store shut down at about half seven however most other stores were still running.

Most people started leaving at around about eight to either go to their home or just to have a walk around the beach. The stores started to close and go out of stock so people shut down their store which made people leave.
