On Wednesday 12th January, the Higher German class braved the wild seas to make their way to the Glasgow Film Theatre to view the German film “I feel like Disco” which was showing as part of the Glasgow Youth Film Festival.
Despite being drenched several times, everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day out – the film was great!

Dunoon Grammar School – Modern Studies Trip to Westminster
At 11.45pm on the 16th of December, Dunoon Grammar School’s Modern Studies Trip commenced. Those involved (Mrs Hunter, Mr Clark, Mr McNeilage, and 26 pupils from DGS) embarked that evening upon an exciting adventure. During the trip the group would get to visit the Houses of Parliament and experience London during Christmas time, but first they had to endure on an 8 hour bus ride to get there.

UK Maths Challenge 2014
On Thursday 6th February, 60 of our S3 and S4 pupils competed in the UK Intermediate Maths Challenge. The UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge is an hour long, intriguing multiple choice question paper, which is designed to stimulate interest in maths in large numbers of pupils.
The top 40% of students nationally receive a gold, silver or bronze certificate in the ratio 1:2:3 and each school receives a Best in School certificate.
Dunoon Grammar School Badminton Winners
A number of our pupils took part in the Annual Argyll and Bute Schools badminton championships last week. Our pupils were a credit to Dunoon Grammar School. Their standard of play was exceptional and they returned with a number of titles.
Rotary Young Chef Competition
Well done to S1 pupil Jennifer who was runner up in the District Final of the Rotary Young Chef Competition last week – she will now go on to the Regional final which will be held in March.
8 competitors will take part in the next round made up of 2 competitors from each of the three Rotary Districts in Scotland and 2 competitors from the North East of England. We wish Jennifer the best of luck in the next round.
Loch Fyne Oyster Bar Masterclass
Martin Furlong Head Chef from the Loch Fyne Oyster Bar at Cairndow gave a superb masterclass in how to make fish chowder to the S4 Hospitality class. The pupils involved made the recipe which introduced them to different types of fish and shellfish along with how to prepare and cook them eg cockles. Martin went on to show the class how to cook mussels from Loch Fyne using three different sauce flavourings eg curry. Martin prepared and cooked some fresh salmon along with some cabbage which the class tasted. The class were encouraged to try slicing some smoked salmon and taste that as well. The class learned a lot of different tips and advice from Martin which they expect to use during their school lessons or at home.
Dunoon Grammar School – Portavadie Marina Chef Visit
Head Chef John Hyslop and Training and Development Manager Chris MacNaughton from Portavadie Marina worked with the S3 National 5 Hospitality class to make bread rolls using different types of savoury toppings eg sesame seeds and pink peppercorns.

School students “Experience Christmas” at Dunoon Grammar School.
Just before the end of last term the first year pupils at DGS had the opportunity to encounter the Christmas story from the bible through a series of interactive stations. The stations were presented by volunteers from local Dunoon churches, and covered stories such as the shepherds near Bethlehem being greeted by an angel, the journey of Mary and Joseph for a Roman census and the wisdom and gifts of the wise men.

DGS: Youth Achievement Award (YAA) Bronze
The YAA is now in its second year at Dunoon Grammar. The Bronze Award is the equivalent of General Standard Grade and is offered to S5/6 pupils who wish to develop skills and qualities useful to them in the future. The YAA involves the members on the group negotiating and planning 4 projects. This session the projects are Teambuilding, Trying New Things, Have Your Say (discussion) and Fundraising.

Young Learning Centre Designers Take a Trip to The Printers
Five pupils from Dunoon Grammar’s learning centre designed an eye-catching range of Christmas cards as part of their contribution to the Learning Support Department’s annual Christmas Fayre. The designs were so colourful and original that learning centre teacher Liz Miller approached local printer, E&R Inglis, to see if they would print the cards to give them the professional finish they deserved.

Dunoon Grammar School – Learning Support Festive Fun Raises Funds for Children and Communities all Over the World
Every year in Dunoon Grammar School, The Learning Support Department hosts a Christmas Fayre to raise money for their chosen charity, ‘World Vision.’ ‘World Vision’ is a charity that helps children and their community to achieve success in far less privileged parts of the world than ours. This year’s event was similar to previous years but unlike previous years, when teachers have organised everything, this year S6 pupil Rebecca Westwood played the coordinating role.

Dunoon Grammar School – “Hair-up” Hairdressing Competition
Dunoon Grammar School Hairdressing Skills for Work pupils have recently participated in a “hair-up” competition where every student from 3rd to 6th year took part in creating their very own design of their interpretation of this season’s trends and styles. The students have chosen hairdressing as a school option over a one year or two year course and thought the competition would be a fun way to show off their new skills of plaits, back-combing, curling and much more of what they have been learning from working with their tutor, Honor McCutcheon.

Tickets for Dunoon Grammar School’s panto ‘Beauty and the Beast’ are now on sale from the school. The panto will be on Tuesday 17th December and Wednesday 18th December 2013 in Dunoon Grammar School at 7pm. £4 for Adults and £2 for Child/Concession.

Two pupils at Dunoon Grammar School received a very pleasant surprise on returning from the October break, when they were called to the school office to find an envelope waiting for them from pop sensations, One Direction.

Scots author Alan Bissett visited most of our secondary schools recently, delivering readings and hosting workshops.
The author of Boyracers, Pack Men, Death of a Ladies’ Man and The Incredible Adam Spark, who was brought up in Falkirk, spoke to S3-S6 pupils about what had inspired him to write his books. Alan, born in 1975, had his first novel published in 2001, and has also written two solo plays, a one-woman show and a short documentary, as well as numerous projects in collaboration with other artists. Pupils from Dunoon Grammar School again played a key role at a significant International Reception hosted by Education Scotland at the City Chambers, Glasgow last week. The Dunoon Grammar School Pipe Band and Highland Dancers entertained a distinguished audience consisting of educationalists from across the globe, including Scotland’s own Minisiter for Learning and Skills, Alasdair Allan MSP.

Good luck to the SAL Team at the SLF!
Pupils from Dunoon Primary and Dunoon Grammar are hosting the Argyll & Bute stand at the SLF today and tomorrow.
The theme of the stand this year is our SAL blog and the pupils spent a day training last week which included demonstrating SAL on iPads and learning techniques for engaging with visitors to the stand. They will all be wearing SAL t-shirts and with their deep knowledge of IT and confidence in presenting, we hope they will have a memorable experience at the SLF.
