£3000 charity windfall on offer thanks to DGS Young Philanthropists

An innovative school based project, designed to encourage young people to think about prominent social issues and build strong partnerships with local charities was launched in Dunoon Grammar School on Monday, 24 August 2015.

All of the pupils at The Cottage Kindergarten in Helensburgh entered a piece of artwork in the nursery category of the Tesco Bank/National Gallery of Scotland Art Competition during the summer term. The title of the entries for this age group was ‘Shoes.’

Dunoon Primary win UK Kodu Kup 2015!!

DPS Win table kodu 2015Hands up – which Scottish primary school took on 300 schools from all over the UK and won hands down?

Dunoon Primary School, who fought off the cream of game designers from Scotland, England and Wales to bring home the Kodu Kup, Microsoft UK’s computer programming competition- bringing the prize to Scotland for the first time.

Dunoon Primary wins prizes at Strathclyde University

DPS reallysmallscience verion 3Pupils from Dunoon Primary School were invited to the reallysmallscience on tour celebration event, at the University of Strathclyde, on the 17th of June. Primary 7 pupils, Siobhan Simpson and Leagha Campbell lifted the trophy for the best 3D entry for the ‘science in everyday life’ image competition. P7 pupil, Lucia Westwood-Phillips also received a medal for her drawing entry to the competition.

Crofting Connections – the story of wool

As part of our local history study and Crofting Connections programme, Sandbank GMU 6/7 worked on their handcraft skills to complete a piece of textile art together. We took the inspiration of a croft as the basis for a wall hanging, seeing as we had researched an abandoned farm settlement near Loch Eck.

Beauty and the Beast

RAC RPS Beauty and the beast 2Rothesay Primary and Academy came together in a fantastic production of Beauty and the Beast. Rehearsals began early this year. With performances on 16th 17th and 18th of June. Pupils and staff planned , prepared and performed together under the directorship of Primary teacher Julie Henry. Thanks go to all who helped, Art and Technical departments among many more.

‘Boswell and Johnson’

Furnace pupil wins a national art competition!

Furnace Abbie wins national art competitionEveryone at Furnace are delighted that our P7 pupil, Abbie Wallace, took the top prize in the nationwide TECHBOT Competition, after her artwork was selected from more than 4,000 entries. Abbie has won for her school a brand new ClassBuddy(tm) ‘Charge and Sync’ trolley from LapSafe® Products, with her artwork displayed as a graphic on the doors. Abbie has also won us 5 brand-new iPad Air’s complete with cases and an iPad and case for herself to take home. The iPad cases also display the winning artwork.

Dunoon Primary Choir sing at Summer Extravaganza at Dgs.

DPS Choir 1Dunoon Primary School Choir sang their hearts out tonight at the Summer Extravaganza at Dunoon Grammar School.They confidently sang 5 songs including Under the Sea, I Just Can’t Wait To Be King, When You Believe, I Can I Will and Sing.
This was the first time the choir had appeared on stage at the local Secondary School. the choir certainly rose to the occasion and were really delighted with their performance.

Cardross Primary 7 in the Spotlight!

Cardross Oscar 4On Thursday the 4th of June we had our Oscar Night at the Roslea Hall Hotel in Rhu. This was to celebrate the success of our Homunculi Movies which we made in our class with the help of our teacher Miss Travers. We worked with the psychologists Dr Greig and Amy to find out more about what to do if you are worried about something. Homunculi are tiny people inside your head who help you to function, solve problems and help you with your worries.

P5 Wonka Factory Opens at Dunoon Primary School

DPS Wonka 1A few weeks ago the Primary 5s at Dunoon Primary School released 20 Golden Tickets into the community. The winners of these lucky tickets were invited to the Factory Opening on Thursday 4th June. At 2pm, the Primary 5s, dressed as characters from the novel “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” greeted the crowds of people and took them on a special tour.

Lighthouse Day at Dalintober Primary School

Dalintober PS  LighthousePrimary 1 and Primary 2/1 have been reading ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’. They had to make a model lighthouse and gather their own materials – Pringle tube, stones and driftwood. They spent an afternoon making beautiful lighthouses. Zena Coffield, Trust Manager of South Kintyre Development Trust kindly judged the lighthouses. There were eight winners and they each received a ‘Lighthouse Keeper’ story book. The winning lighthouses are on display in Zena’s shop window.

P7 Young Leaders at Dalintober PS

Dalintober PS P7 Young Leaders  Football Lunch ClubP7 pupils at Dalintober have taken on the roles of Young Leaders to develop and lead a wide range of Lunchtime Clubs for all other classes in the school. The clubs are Football Skills, Dance, Space Activities, Chess, Cartoon Drawings and an Art Club. Music with Phillip Stewart at DPS!

DPS Guitar 2Primary 6 and Primary 7 were treated to learning about the bass guitar from a former Dunoon Primary pupil Phillip Stewart! Phillip has been busy studying for an Honours Degree in Professional Musicianship at the British & Irish Modern Music Institute.
Phillip explained to the class how the bass guitar is built and the importance of a bass guitar in a band. He also told the class how he began his musical journey. Some were surprised to hear that it actually began in Dunoon Primary School playing the chanter with Mr Campbell!

Book of the Month

Rothesay PS Book of the Month 1Primary 1 and 2 at Rothesay Primary have been working with Patricia McArthur from Rothesay Library and Shiona Lawson, who works in our school Resource Centre. Patricia brings in a copy of our ‘book of the month’ for each pupil and with Shiona, tells the stories through arts and craft activities that the pupils can do in school and at home.

Vocal workshop at DPS

DPS Vocal Workshops 1P3, P4 and our Pre 5 pupils were delighted to take part in a Vocal Workshop, organised and led by Miss McChesney, music teacher from Dunoon Grammar School and some of her fantastic pupils! The children learned some new songs, harmonised in groups with actions and dance moves. The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience. What a wonderful way to improve and add to their performance skills. An excellent opportunity to work in co-operation with enthusiastic and supportive secondary school pupils. DGS visit Kirn PS  Early YearsOn Wednesday 29th April Karen McChesney and pupils from Dunoon Grammar School visited the Early Learning and Childcare Centre at Kirn to share some musical experiences. the children had fun with vocal warm-ups, clapping, dancing and singing and then enjoyed listening to Karen’s guitar playing.
