On the 4th of June some of the learning centre pupils of Dunoon Grammar school went to Scottish Disability Sports Athletics event at Grangemouth. We won 4 medals, 3 bronze medals and 1 gold medal. After a long day running we were all really sleepy, some of us had a sleep on the bus! We met lots of other kids from different schools in Scotland.

Primary 2’s from St Joseph’s Primary School had a very special morning when they visited their classmates at The Sunshine Room Nurture Group at Parklands School. The pupils came together for a storyteller event by Bea Ferguson. Bea told some great stories, she told us one about a possum and some fairies who loved cakes, she also taught us some funny songs. Helen Kennedy, Park Ranger, got in touch with The Sunshine Room Nurture Group at Parklands School to ask for their help with some anti-social trolls on Inchcailloch Island, the trolls were causing all sorts of havoc but the pupils were able to show off their troll hunting skills and teach them to respect their habitat. We also had time to look at some native wildlife, toast marshmallows on a campfire and play some team games on the beach.
School The social in-reach group at Parklands School had an interesting morning in the kitchen cooking and tasting two very different breakfasts. The pupils followed a recipe to create a potato and lentil curry, a traditional Indian breakfast and compared it to a traditional Scottish breakfast of porridge. The boys said they much prefered the curry and would have it everyday for breakfast if they could!
Primary 3 pupils from John Logie Baird Primary were invited to join their classmates who attend The Sunshine Room Nurture Group at Hermitage Park for a special storyteller event. Bea Ferguson a professional storyteller was able to share some of her wonderful stories after The Sunshine Room received funding from Creative Scotland’s Live Literature Programme. The programme is set up to inspire and enthuse the primary pupils to engage and enjoy literature. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed Bea’s visit, especially her interactive story about Mary and her Granny.

Corrie MacDonald, S2 pupil at Dunoon Grammar School proudly presents Head Teacher Mr. Mitchell with a piece of original artwork to hang outside his office. Corrie finds some aspects of the curriculum very challenging and does a lot of his learning in the learning centre. But, amongst other things, Corrie has a real talent for art.
One of the four focuses (or capacities) of The Curriculum for Excellence is to encourage pupils to become effective contributors to their communities. What better way to do this than to volunteer some time to help out at a local nursery school. This is what Shannon Lyon, S5 pupil at Dunoon Grammar School and full time pupil in the learning centre, has been doing since August 2013.

Some of Dunoon Grammar School’s senior learning centre pupils were delighted to invite local entrepreneurs in to school to talk about their experiences as business people. The pupils are undertaking an ASDAN short course in Enterprise. ASDAN offer a range of certificates and qualifications that allow pupils to work at their own pace and own level, making them ideal for many learning centre pupils. The Enterprise short course, which will take 60 hours to complete, provides opportunities for pupils to develop entrepreneurial knowledge and skills, and how to use these effectively. Whilst Mr. Mitchell continues to settle in well as new head teacher at Dunoon Grammar School, he felt that his office was still feeling a little bit bare. He approached pupils in the learning centre to see if they could help by providing a few plants. Outdoor learning is a big part of the learning centre curriculum and the pupils rose to the challenge straight away. Pupils painted and decorated containers so that the plants would look attractive in Mr. Mitchell’s office.
This week has seen the start of the new in-reach/out-reach programme at Parklands School. The programme sees pupils from mainstream schools in the Helensburgh and Lomond cluster attending Parklands for sessions through the week. Pupils may attend The Sunshine Room or The Evergreen Room where they will work on social and emotional well-being, social skills, play and independent skills for life. Pupils may also access our sensory room or hydrotherapy pool. Everyone at Parklands is looking forward to working with the pupils attending.
Five pupils from Dunoon Grammar’s learning centre designed an eye-catching range of Christmas cards as part of their contribution to the Learning Support Department’s annual Christmas Fayre. The designs were so colourful and original that learning centre teacher Liz Miller approached local printer, E&R Inglis, to see if they would print the cards to give them the professional finish they deserved.

Every year in Dunoon Grammar School, The Learning Support Department hosts a Christmas Fayre to raise money for their chosen charity, ‘World Vision.’ ‘World Vision’ is a charity that helps children and their community to achieve success in far less privileged parts of the world than ours. This year’s event was similar to previous years but unlike previous years, when teachers have organised everything, this year S6 pupil Rebecca Westwood played the coordinating role.

Creative Play Day at The Sunshine Room
On Wednesday 11th December the parents and new pupils of The Sunshine Room Nurture Group were invited to Parklands for a creative play day. Parents and pupils enjoyed a number of activities together such as vegetable printing, decorating biscuits, role play and games. This allowed the new pupils to visit The Sunshine Room for the first time with their parents. A fabulous time was had by all!
