Rotary Young Chef Competition

Well done to S1 pupil Jennifer who was runner up in the District Final of the Rotary Young Chef Competition last week – she will now go on to the Regional final which will be held in March.
8 competitors will take part in the next round made up of 2 competitors from each of the three Rotary Districts in Scotland and 2 competitors from the North East of England. We wish Jennifer the best of luck in the next round.

MINI COMMONWEALTH GAMES AT DALINTOBER PRIMARY SCHOOL

Everyone in Dalintober Primary’s P7 class had a super time during their Mini Commonwealth Games which were held in school last week. The Games marked the end of an Interdisciplinary Task all about The Commonwealth and the Commonwealth Games.
A variety of activities had been enjoyed by the class leading up to The Dalintober Games, including compiling factfiles about some Commonwealth countries, making clay tiles to advertise the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and using a Diamond Nine to make group decisions about which events were most important. National Swimming Success

Congratulations to Kimmi Rae who has qualified for the Girls’ 12 and Under 50m backstroke event at the 2014 Scottish Schools’ Swimming Finals. Kimmi, who is a member of the Islay and Jura Dolphins A.S.C. , will be representing Bowmore Primary School at the Finals in East Kilbride on the 7th March. She is the first pupil from Bowmore Primary School and only the 4th swimmer from Islay and Jura to qualify for the Finals. Go for it and best of luck!

Colgrain support Scotland at the Emirates Stadium

On 14th January, the Colgrain netball club travelled to the brand new Commonwealth Stadium in Glasgow to support the Scotland International team. The Scottish Ferns Netball team were playing the reigning commonwealth champions The New Zealand Ferns in an exciting and quick paced match at the Emirates Stadium!
Although the Ferns won 63 – 26, the pupils from Colgrain were always in good spirits, always encouraging the Thistles to do well with chants of ‘Come on Scotland’ and Mexican waves.

Oban Gaelic Medium Pupils Scoop Television Quiz Prize

Two pupils from Rockfield Primary School’s Gaelic medium classes in Oban are to appear on BBC Alba’s Gleusta children’s quiz programme next week.

Calum Garvin and Calum McLuckie were P6 pupils when the programme was recorded in June 2013 at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, Isle of Skye. They competed successfully in a series of challenges against contestants from Tollcross Primary School in Edinburgh and returned with a trophy to present to their school. St. Mun’s Choir Entertain Residents At Ardenlee

It’s always good to give back to the community and when the children of St. Mun’s Choir were asked to entertain the residents at Ardenlee Care Home in Dunoon, they jumped at the chance to do just that.
Resplendent in their uniform and festive Santa hats the children sang a selection of their favourite carols for residents, staff and visitors who clapped along and joined in with their own personal favourites.

Dunoon Grammar School – “Hair-up” Hairdressing Competition

Dunoon Grammar School Hairdressing Skills for Work pupils have recently participated in a “hair-up” competition where every student from 3rd to 6th year took part in creating their very own design of their interpretation of this season’s trends and styles. The students have chosen hairdressing as a school option over a one year or two year course and thought the competition would be a fun way to show off their new skills of plaits, back-combing, curling and much more of what they have been learning from working with their tutor, Honor McCutcheon.

Oban Hoopsters Take the Win!

Oban High School Senior Boys A Team and Junior Girls took the top title in the Argyll & Bute Basketball Tournament held at Atlantic Leisure Centre on Thursday 12 December. Mrs Sharp, the Junior Girls’ and Boys’ team coach, was delighted with the teams’ win. “They have worked really hard to get to the top of their game and this win represents their high level of dedication and skill at basketball.” She added that she is confident the teams will continue to excel at the sport.

Kilcreggan Pupil Wins Jackie Baillie Christmas Card Competition

Primary 7/6 pupils in Jackie Baillie’s constituency were invited to design a Christmas card again this year and we at Kilcreggan Primary are very proud to announce that one of our pupil’s, Rachel Harper (P6), drew the winning design.

Star Winners at Dunoon Primary!

Dunoon Primary pupils did exceedingly well at this year’s final between various local schools at the Annual Speech Contest in St Johns Church Hall.
The competition is organized every year by the Association of Speakers Club, Dunoon and is an excellent way for children to get involved in public speaking. The pupils learn to speak at their own pace as their confidence grows. Few skills impact on your life more positively than learning to speak in public. Scottish Hydro Christmas Card Design Winner for Dalintober PS

The Scottish Hydro shop, Campbeltown recently held a Christmas Card design competition for Primary 1 pupils and Gregor’s design was chosen as the winning entry, judged by Miss Mary McMillan. As well as receiving his own prize, Gregor also won a new CD system for his class, and all entrants also received a small treat for their efforts. Thank you to Anne and the team at Scottish Hydro from Dalintober!

Hermitage pupils win Cross Country awards.

Getting up early on a Sunday to brave freezing temperatures paid off for pupils of Hermitage Primary when they competed at the Garscube Harriers Cross Country. The challenging course didn’t deter the pupils who secured both individual and team prizes. Hermitage Primary is very proud of all the runners, not just due to the awards they received but also because they displayed excellent sportsmanship. A special mention goes to the team prize winners. Rachael McKillop, Sophie Muchie and Sophie McAuley won bronze for the Primary 7s while Calum McGilrvrary, Cameron Cromar and Ruaridh Fletcher scooped silver for the Primary 6s.

Cardross Primary Mugdock Park Cross Country Success

Cardross Primary recently competed in the Mugdock Park Cross Country Championships. The pupils from P6 and P7 were accompanied and trained by Mrs Girling. All of the runners were impressive on the day but a notable mention must be given to the P7 boys team who came in first place with some excellent individual performances. This was a fantastic achievement for the boys who were up against some stiff competition from some very large Glasgow schools.

Wiz Kids from Oban High Take on the Lit Quiz

Nine learners from Oban High School participated in the UK division of the global Kids Lit Quiz at Kilsyth Academy on 12th November. The Wiz Kids came 15th and 23rd in a field of 39 competitors.

Children In Need at Dunoon Primary

Mrs MacDonald and P6/5 of Dunoon Primary School organised activities to raise money for Children In Need. The children sold raffle tickets to win a’ Pudsey in his Onesie’ from Build a Bear, they made and sold bookmarks and organised an art competition. Entrants had to design a ‘Onesie’, for Pudsey. On Friday the 15th November everyone in school was asked to wear a ‘Onesie’, something spotty or something yellow and to give a donation of 50p to Children In Need.

Argyll & Bute Primary Writing Competition Winners Announced!

OHS S4 Pupil wins national design competition

GIRFEC National Competition Winner is Oban High School S4 Student Niamh Macauley
Oban High School S5 pupil Niamh Macauley’s beautifully drawn poster was the winning entry from among hundreds of submissions in the national GIRFEC student competition. Sponsored by the Scottish government’s programme known as Getting It Right For Every Child, the topic for the design competition was “What does well being mean to you?”

Oban High Trad School of Music Winners!

Oban High School Traditional School of Music and Amy Boyce (S5) were successful at the Opportunity Knocks Oban Live Auditions on Saturday to win a place on the big stage at the Oban Hogmanay Street Party.  There were 10 acts which were then whittled down to four and those four acts performed once more for the judges who chose our two Oban High School acts.  Amy is a singing pupil of Jean Gillies, local singing teacher and the Musical Director of the Traditional School of Music is Sileas Sinclair. This marks another great accomplishment for this talented group of young people at Oban High.
