Batman Strikes at Dunoon Primary!

The pupils of Dunoon Primary School were delighted to welcome world acclaimed comic writer Mr Grant Morrison, MBE to their school on World Book Day. Mr Morrison who among other things writes for DC Comics and Marvel Comics enthralled Primary 5,6, and 7 pupils with his talk on his Batman story lines and other Superheroes he has created such as Captain Clyde! He answered many questions the children had about his career and was truly inspirational as he encouraged the children to keep working at whatever they have a passion for and never give up.

Oban High Supports Scotland at Murrayfield on Saturday for Six Nations

Oban High School students journeyed to Murrayfield on Saturday 8 March for the Six Nations rugby match with Scotland v France. Although all were disappointed by the outcome, it was nonetheless an incredibly exciting match right up to the remaining two minutes of play.

‘Tasty Tuck Team’ Hit Dalintober PS

On Friday, the ‘Tasty Tuck Team’, aka Dalintober Primary’s Pupil Council members, launched a new initiative to encourage pupils to bring in healthy snacks for playtimes. They sold some tasty morsels – fruit, pitta breads and crackers – as suggestions and these ‘tasters’ went down a treat with their fellow pupils. Following the current project’s run, they hope that parents and pupils will continue to promote the healthy eating message.

Vikingar Fun for P5

What a magnificent fun day out Dunoon Primary P5 class had at Vikingar on Friday 7th March. The pupils were treated to a visit to a real life Viking Home and as they entered ‘strange aromas’ were evident of the Viking age. The informative guide quickly began to introduce us to a world of information on our topic, with lots of clever pupils answering questions testing their knowledge of the Vikings.

Budding Engineers at St Joseph’s!

Last session P5 (now current P6), under the excellent guidance and tuition of class teacher Catherine McLean, entered the Scottish Engineer’s Leaders Award organised by STEM in conjunction with Strathclyde University’s Faculty of Engineering. The project was to create an engineering design for the future and with such a wide remit, the creativity of the children exploded onto the page! The children had to submit a drawing of their design along with a written piece to describe it.

Kilchrenan Wins Rolls Royce Award

Kilchrenan Primary has been selected as a Special Merit Award Winner in the Rolls Royce Science Prize. This award, and a prize of £1000 for science teaching and learning, comes as the result of the school’s focus on science in it’s improvement plan and follows the submission of an action plan after a summer school in the National Science Learning Centre in York. Hola! World Book Day with an International flavour at Ardchattan!

Ardchattan Primary School have celebrated World Book Day and International School Meals day with fun, food and fantastic fundraising for Mary’s Meals!
It all began six weeks ago at our Community Burns Supper when we announced the start of our Change for Mary’s Meals campaign. We have four of the blue Mary’s Meals mugs, one for each child in our school. Our target was to fill the mugs with enough small change to feed four children in Malawi for a year, a total of about £40.

Park Primary Fairtrade Fortnight!

Park Primary School has been a Fairtrade School now for over four years. This year the focus for Fairtrade Fortnight was bananas so Primary 3 wrote to local supermarkets Lidl and Tesco who kindly donated Fairtrade bananas to the school! Over the fortnight all classes had a focus on Fairtrade and found creative ways to use the bananas!

Catholic Education Week

Catholic Education Week took place from 23 Feb until 01 March 2014 all over Scotland and the children of St. Joseph’s, Helensburgh eagerly took part.

The week started off on Education Sunday (23 February) with the parishioners receiving a report from the school giving a detailed account on developments in Catholic Education from the previous year; this was presented alongside detail of all the plans to develop Catholic Education in the forthcoming week at school. Tarbert Primary School – Banner for Commonwealth Games

P4/5 were showing their creativity on Friday, 21st February and having a good time into the bargain, when they had the chance to work with Alison McAlpine on designing and making a banner which may end up in the athletes’ village for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Shake up your Wake up!

Primary 5/4 at St Mun’s Primary School helped the whole school to ‘Shake Up Their Wake Up’ by taking part in The Big Farmhouse Breakfast week from 27th to 31st of January.
Pupils developed their organisational and communication skills by creating menus for each class; cooking different healthy breakfast options; carrying out surveys and devising a breakfast race to help everyone stay fit and healthy!

Volleyball Tournament at Dunoon Grammar School

Dunoon Grammar School hosted the annual Volleyball Tournament organised by Mrs Fiona McLean on Monday 3 March. The contestants arrived from the various local Primary Schools and the rules were explained to everyone. As normal it was a very well organised event with every child thoroughly enjoying the day! Dunoon Teams A & C made their way to the final with Dunoon Team H losing out to Strachur for third place.

Dunoon Grammar School – Gymnastics Trip

On Monday 24th February, twenty seven school gymnasts received specialist training at the Inverclyde National Sports Centre, in Largs. The pupils participated in a three hour coaching session led by two professional British Gymnastics Club coaches. The pupils performed to an excellent standard and were commended for the standard of their work by the guest tutors at this Olympic standard facility.

Samba Drumming at Park Primary

During this term the pupils of Primaries 6/5 and 6 in Park Primary have had instruction in samba drumming from Steven MacNally. Over 6 weeks the classes worked hard to learn the rhythms for each instrument culminating in each class performing for 2 younger classes. P6/5 (pictured) will be performing with Steven at the Learning Festival on the 10th March at the Corran Halls. We can’t wait.

East Lorn Health and Wellbeing Conference

On Thursday 20th and Friday 21st of February P6 and 7 pupils from the East Lorn cluster(Dalmally,Taynuilt and Kilchrenan) got together for a two day health and wellbeing conference at Dalmally Community hall entitled “Changes and Challenges”
During the first day the children took part in various workshops on emotional changes, puberty, friendships and resolving conflicts and healthy lifestyles.

Traditional Toys from The Toy Shop!

Primary 1 at Cardross had an exciting afternoon testing traditional toys as part of their topic. Fiona from The Toy Shop in Helensburgh kindly gave up her afternoon to introduce the pupils to the toys. It was a wonderful afternoon and we are very grateful to Fiona for her input.

Lorn Mathsfest

On the 12th February the fifteenth Annual Lorn Mathsfest was held in Oban High School. Forty-eight S1 pupils and forty-eight P7 pupils from the associated Primary Schools formed teams of four. These teams worked together enthusiastically during the day to solve written and practical maths problems and puzzles. One of the written problems was in French and another was in Gaelic!

Park Primary 3 Protect an Acre of the Rainforest!

In the Autumn Primary 3 in Park Primary School undertook an interdisciplinary study on The Tropical Rainforest and as part of this they compared the local temperate rainforest, Dunollie Woods, to the tropical Amazon Rainforest. As a final outcome for their learning the whole class took part in an informative assembly at the end of November which was performed in front of the other children as well as any family members who wanted to come along. At the end of the assembly donations were collected and have now been used to protect an acre of the Rainforest through the Rainforest Concern Organisation.

Dunoon Grammar School – Higher German Film Trip

On Wednesday 12th January, the Higher German class braved the wild seas to make their way to the Glasgow Film Theatre to view the German film “I feel like Disco” which was showing as part of the Glasgow Youth Film Festival.
Despite being drenched several times, everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day out – the film was great!
